Great video, thanks for taking the time to share ! I do not get the draw of this stuff. I am an experienced remodeler and tile layer - I just did my first job with Kerdi to try it and I have to say it was an ARDOUS pain in the ass. I can see this saving time if you're using it full time & laying new construction and want to use drywall - but in remodels it actually cost me time AND it was far more expensive than removing the drywall and installing cementboard. Case in point, I followed up with a shower re-do a week after I did the one with Kerdi Membrane and it was $100 less and I finished the job a day sooner. Its literally like having to lay tile twice - why would anyone go through that ? I could cut the old drywall out, lay cementboard and re-seam / re-seal it in half the time it took to level the old drywall, mix the thinset and install / float the kerdi. I won't be back - to be honest I hated the product, it was anything but time saving and it is WAY overpriced for what it is !! And the Kerdi brand thinset price was a JOKE, had I used it the job would have cost me $200 more !

completely different mindset. as a homeowner, i'm not trying to find the cheapest, fastest way to do the job. i want the BEST way that is least likely to require me to futz around with it in the future because it failed. overengineered, sure, but good insurance. I'm sure you'll take gambles all day long on a home that doesn't belong to you. Every time my neighbors and I get together, we're complaining about the builders and renovators in our area and the shortcuts they take.

I have found when applying this system it works best to get all the groves from the trowel running in the same direction. When you apply the membrane to the thin set take the back side of the trowel and run in the direction of the groves to squeeze all the air out for better adhesion. Ardex modified thin set is guaranteed with the Kerdi water proofing system. It chemically dries

Thanks for this video and the others relating to bathroom remodel. I was able to buy the Schluter Systems system and install it in my own remodel. not a professional like you but with your videos I was able to transform my 1970's (green painted white) bathroom to a nice custom bathroom for under $3K.

I'll second the comment about wetting the wall before you install the membrane! Also, now schluter makes their own thin set that's called all set and it's a modified thinset that works with all their products!

in future reference , just a suggestion for you, should apply your Kirdi Fix to the tub flange before you put the membrane on to obtain a water tight seal at tub wall joint.

I prefer to do it after. I set the kerdi right onto the tub and then seal the joint. I have found that water tends to pool at the base of the tile in behind and I want to guarantee that I don't get mold/.

I'm at the stage where I have the drywall up, and I am reading to make sure I have not missed anything. I used drywall on all three surfaces but I have cement board behind the drywall in front of the plumbing to protect the drywall from behind in case of a leak. I definitely found drywall easier to work with.

that is a little different. Let me know how that goes for you when you are done. I would want to make sure you have set the valve at the right depth and account for the extra layer.

Great video. Maybe on another you could go into detail how to waterproof where the tub tile flange meets the drywall. I believe thats the most critical area where water may sit and soak up into the drywall. Thanks for your hard work and informative videos

Very true. It is imperative that the drywall is sealed on the underside during a tub installation with the kerdifix product. Water still gets behind the tile and gathers up until it breaks the silicone seal. During this time untreated wallboard is getting wet if not treated.

I talked to Kurti headquarters and they said you could use their modified thinset but you cannot use any modified thin sets that they don't make. the one they make has additives to it that makes that modified work so it does work with the Kerdi but you got to buy it from them. it even has a name of kurdi right on the bag of thin-set

Great video, many thanks. As a remodeling contractor, whose done about 20 of this type of install, the key to success here is the use of NON-MODIFED thin set, as was stated clearly. If you don't make a mistake on this you are 90% on your way to success. Thanks again.

I have watched a ton of your videos and others, so many different methods that Im a little overwhelmed with my master bath walk in shower reno. 34x48. What is the least expensive way to do it right and have it last, regardless of what codes call for? Laticrete water proofing? Redgard? or is it really worth the added expense to invest in a schluter kerdi backer board? thanks Excellent videos, great explanations and video demos....

Great question. I like to put value on a waterproofing system in the following way. 1) can you afford to do schluter now! 2) How long do you plan to live there? 3) How much are you investing in your tile? 4) Is this the only shower in the house. 5) do you have a good fan to exhaust the moisture in the air. 6) how many showers a day will it see, anything over 3 and I would go Schluter. Other than that it is your choice. The more you spend on your system , the better it is.

Now your all set ;) ...schluter has their own non-mod thinset called flex r-20 ! to warranty Kerdi fibre you need to use this I thought . Could be wrong .

I really like the way you overlapped the membrane instead of using the tape. Very nice. BTW for folks in the US, niether HD nor L sell unmodified mortar. If you search/ask for it, they will give you something that is modified. You should be able to just order some Kerdi All-Set from a tile store and get it in a couple of days.

Maybe someone will answer, everyone keeps saying unmodified cement, but if you look at the Kerdi all set, it says modified. Which is right and what is wrong? I am leaning towards kerdi being right and the rest are mistaken?

The mortar used to adhere this membrane will seriously scratch the shiny surface of nearly every material, as masonry adhesives are commonly known to do. Keep this in mind when cleaning your surfaces of this stuff. Otherwise, you will easily damage all of your shiny surfaces.

In the comments here you say go ahead and tile but in other related clips you mention to wait 24hrs after levelling and installing the first course along the tub edge before building up. I'm using 4x12, kerdi and unmodified cement. Should I wait or was that comment for other systems?

Jeff I've come to love and trust you and your work...this from an old, old timer handyman type - question? Kerdi is not hard to work with, its a well thought out system....but....at least since the pandemic, its been hell to find the right products you need in the states. The thinkset you can find, and none in my area , is being sold way overlist price...this shower install for me a homeowner/handyman type has been hell...Question....can I put a small thin covering of easyset by Schuluter over the membane letting it dry, then used modified? Other unmodified suggest I can't use their product with Porcillian tiles.

Can I use the unmodified mortar between cement board and kerdi membrane as well as use it on top of the membrane to place tiles? I had called the mapei customer service and they said I had to use modified mortar for between cement and membrane and unmodified for between membrane and tile

You should check the membrane product installation manual for maximum reliability, you can't go wrong with that.

Use a large drywall knife to flatten it instead of a grout float. It’s easy and works better.

Schluter recommends Schluter All Set which is a modified thin-set... I’m confused. You’re using non modified. Does that void schluter’s warranty?

If Schluter makes the thin-set, then it's okay for it to be a modified type, but it's incomplete to say Schluter "recommends Schluter All Set). They recommend Schluter All Set AND alternative brand unmodified thin-set. They prefer a thin-set with a long set time since the bond is firmer and longer lasting. Also, unmodified thin-set does not require air to cure in the way modified thin-set does, so placing non Schluter modified thin-set under Kerdi membrane is a no-no. Apparently, they've developed a way to use modified thin-set and still allow it to cure between and under Kerdi membrane. Follow this simple advice. Always use unmodified thin-set with Kerdi. If you have to use modified thin-set, use Kerdi brand. Both keep the warranty valid.

Carol you are so right except for 1 small difference. The membrane won't shift like paper. You really need to take care laying it on the wall or you will be pulling it off to realign. Good luck.

What about the bathtub to drywall joint? This is always the point of failure. Shouldn't the membrane be glued to the tub for a waterproof seal?

Great video. Question for the group. We are adding tile to previously installed concrete board that’s has plaster and lath above it. The cbu is mounted from the tub up 3ft and the plaster wall continues up 5ft. This wall is solid and plumb so what do you recommend we do to the plaster walls before placing the ditra membrane on it?

This is entirely up to you. Sheetrock and membrane is probably a little less expensive than kerdi-board and you still have to tape the seams with kerdi-tape and unmodified mortar.

So how many screws is that holding the backer board? Even if a construction adhesive was applied, that few screws is scary when you think of it holding the weight of the backer, thinnest, tile and grout for 20 or 30+ years.

Love your videos but drywall is a no no on the wet wall side . if there is a small leak drywall will crumble and membrane will do nothing.cement board will stay in tact until you fix issue thx

If water actually gets behind the water proofing you are screwed regardless. Other products like cement board or densshield will not magically stop the leak. They will soak up the moisture just like drywall.

Would you recommend scraping the mortar that fell on the tub with your trowel? Is there a possibility it could scratch the tub no matter how careful you are especially if its a new tub

I always use a sponge soaking wet to wipe it off. In most cases the tub has a plastic cover on it. Just peel the plastic back enough to tile and leave that protection in place to guard against scratching.

You DID NOT use a sponge to remove the mortar from the tub, you used your trowel & we all heard the scraping sound! Where you scraped was not covered with plastic either. You get a fail for that!

Loving your video's!! Two questions. Firstly, there was a small space in between the drywall sheets. Was that on purpose or just happenstance? Secondly, do you not apply the overlapping sheet for the Kerdi joints? Thanks and keep the VIDS coming!

Thank you spaceacelen! I love feedback like this. To answer your first question, in most cases small gaps are easy to fix when you mud. For this particular situation I led it go because we have a waterproof membrane bonded to the wall. As for the joints for the membrane, I just overlap my pieces by 2 inches and avoid the entire step. We have a 2'x3' window on the long side of our tub. Would you say it's better to kerdi to the window, meaning over the wood frame, or just up to it on the drywall and use a waterproof trim instead of trying to tile it all in?

Use the schluter all set....Do not use regular mortar. It's impossible to get the corner right if you don't use the all set.

The only thing I see is that the drywall does not hold weight as well as hardibacker board therefore if you use a heavy tile you have the risk of failure

I am installing the Kerdi membrane tonight in our new shower surround and the only non-modified mortar I can find in my small town is the basic Quikset mortar. Will that work for the membrane AND to successfully adhere very large/heavy tiles to the wall? My tiles are 18 x 32 porcelain. Now that I'm watching your video on the waterproofing and the difference in mortar, I am concerned I actually don't know what I'm doing on this project. The biggest tile I have used in the past was 12 x 24. HELP!!

Thank you for the video. Did you use any primer on the boards first? In the Mapei product list they do not recommend using Kerabond on gypsum walls and wooden based substrates.Thank you for any suggestion.

are you just cementing that membrane right onto the tub flange? i know you used kerdi fix to seal it off camera but it looks like youre also cementing it to the flange. if so, youre not worried about expansion contraction issues with that?

Out of curiosity, is that regular drywall board? I would have expected concrete backer board or at least green/purple board. Possibly a local building code question.

When using a waterproofing system there is no need for backer board designed to add a couple of years to the life of a tile job. The waterproofing is good for life

What should I do if I accidentally used modified thin set instead of unmodified when applying kerdi membrane to the drywall? The bags are identical except “unmodified/modified” written on the bad. Should I float it with unmodified ?

I put 8qts into a full 50lb bag and it was too damn runny but also too late to stop.. I only put up one horizontal layer and waited to see how it dried. Hoping its ok (shrug)

You say to use a non modified cement but the schluter all set cement is modified. It says right on the bag " engineered for all kerdi products " and now I'm confused. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

HI AGAIN. So im on my third run of this video. Now that i have my membrane system i just need to go over to make sure its done right. So home depot does not carry the non-modified thinset. I found it a lowes and I was even happier to find out its the exact mapei one you mentioned. Of course the contractor I asked recommend the "large and heavy tile" polymer mortar that I bought from him. According to him they use it all the time with the system. Yikes!! So my questions: After the membrane is installed, how soon can tiling begin? Number 2. Can i use the large & heavy format polymer thinset when tiling the porcelain tile to it? Just making sure the non-modified only applies to install the membrane to the drywall/hardie backer. last question for a typcial corner two wall shower is it usually one 50lb bag enough? Wow , indeed. I personally know that large tile on a membrane cures really slow. therefore non modified cement is always a better option. how much cement you use has everything to do with how smooth your walls are and how thick you are installing the cement and if you are using a tile leveling system or not. Easier to buy an extra bag and bring it back if you don't need it then run out during the install. Cheers!

Using thinset mortar to put Kerdi membrane over cement backer board. I'm using unmodified cement but it says "Floor Tile Mortar". Am I using the wrong product?

Maybe I am too much of a novice installer, but I feel you left out some important information in this video, and I feel my comment might help someone... You need to dampen the drywall and wipe the drywall clean of any dust with a sponge not doing it makes mortar dry faster causing it to not stick also do it in small sections as it is very difficult to get the kerdi to stick to the mortar and just buy the seam for the corners. Also kerdi all set is recommended which is a modified cement... so I'm not sure what you are talking about.. which is why I think I had adhesion issues.

need help!!! installed hardi backer and kerdi membrane. however, when holding up tile to one of the 3 walls (4x12 tile) the tile does not sit level!!! the first 3 inches or so of the tile rocks in about an eighth of an inch. what the heck can i do

Mortar, grout and tile are not waterproof. And drywall is extremely un-waterproof, even the green or purple board you're supposed to use in bathrooms. You can skip the membrane if you have cement board. 1/4 cement board is ultra cheap. Don't skimp on it, there is an absolutely 100% chance the shower will fail and possibly seriously damage your wall and floor framing. Take care in your choice in constructing or installing a pan as well, every part of a shower build is critical. Not to discourage anyone from DIY'ing. USG makes a shower kit that's about half the price of the Schluter one, comes with pre-fab pan etc. And there are many components out there like pre-fab pans and membranes and cementboard products (like Diamondback, which can be cut with normal tools) that you can use.

@@ifpff thank you for your advice , knowledge and expertise. I installed a "direct to stud" 3 peice shower surround yesterday. I was going to tile the top 2ft area above the shower surround on all sides but I just installed the basic regular sheet rock and mudded the walls already. Decided not to tile since I dont have durarock/cement board/waterproofing in place. Thanks again.

@@aaronshensky9385 You can apply the 1/4" cement board over the drywall or cut out the drywall carefully with an oscillating tool and screw cement board in place, then tile. Above the acrylic surround/level of the showerhead is much less risky for water infiltration, but always a good idea, because mortar is cement (as our Canadian friend in the video makes clear) and is hydrophobic, meaning it leaches water, and the water will go into the drywall. That is why manufacturers like Schluter say that if you have by chance taped and mudded your drywall joints before installation by accident or due to local fire codes, to prime them with a latex primer first. Anyways... yes, you still have a chance to do the backerboard and tile. There are lot of edge tile profiles that will hide the edge of the backer board. It can be screwed - without mortar or any adhesive or cement on its back - to the drywall into studs, and then tiled on directly.

How do I recognize the modified from the non-modifed cement ? I live in Germany (the origin of the Schlüter company) but believe it or not, Schlüter products are not available in regular building material markets !! Also the workers do not know this word and it seems there is no clear translation for modified and non modified. is there some standard or someway to make sure ?

Schluter is now suggesting to fold the kerdi 1/4 inch onto the tub. This way you don't need kerdi fix. The top and edges are redundant as they don't see enough moisture to cause a problem even in the long term.

Have a question. My contractor installed a kerdi membrane over regular sheetrock in a tiled stand up shower in my house. Can you place kerdi over regular sheetrock? I have always been taught to use concrete board behind tile or tubs. Concrete board doesn't mold or fall apart if wet like sheetrock does. Should I worry that if my shower head or faucet leaks that my sheetrock will mold and fall apart? I know it's waterproof on one side, but what if water drips or runs down the back?

Cement board will do nothing to prevent damage to your home if you have water leaking behind.

Hi! I have watched your schluter videos and schluter’s videos. I am wondering about the important lance of Kerdi fix. I saw they used it along the tub base to seal the membrane. Should be buy that too or use a caulk after tile installation?

Hi Abigail, you can also install the kerdi membrane right onto the tub. Or use lepage 2 in 1 as a sealant.Either way the membrane should be a continuous seal right to the tub for maximum results.

You should always apply a bathroom caulking after tile installation, because regardless of your membrane setup, water can still attack the tile mortar that holds the tiles on the membrane, if the joint between the tub and the tile is not sealed with proper caulking after tile installation.

The section of the tub on the spout side had a nice sized gap from the bottom of the dry wall to the tub. Did you fill that with your cement before applying the membrane or did leave it as a gap behind the membrane? Let me know pls. I'm going to be doing this in my home and there's the same gap in mine.

makes no difference due to the overlapping science. as long as you have a 2 inch overlap you could install anyway you like and top down or bottom up as well.
