Steps for How to Install Kitchen Cabinets:
1. Check the ceiling for level in two directions. If it’s out of level, find the low spot and use it as the measuring reference point.
2. Measure down from the ceiling (or low spot) 33 inches in several places and mark the walls. These marks represent the bottom of the upper cabinets.
3. Connect the marks with a long level and a sharp pencil to produce a level line along the kitchen walls.
4. Mark the stud locations on the walls, then measure and transfer stud locations to the back of the upper cabinets. (If you prefer to proceed with one cabinet at a time, begin with the one that will hang in the corner of the kitchen, and continue with consecutive cabinets.)
5. Pre-drill a screw-shank clearance hole through the cabinet backs at each stud location.
6. Unscrew and remove the cabinet doors; place the doors in a nearby room for safekeeping.
7. Hold the first wall cabinet in place in the corner of the kitchen. Be sure the bottom of the cabinet is even with the level line marked in Step 3.
8. Drive one screw through the upper back of the cabinet and into the wall stud.
9. Check the cabinet for plumb with a level. If necessary, slide shims behind the cabinet. Then drive in the remaining screws to secure the cabinet. Trim the shims with a utility knife.
10. Repeat the previous six steps to install the rest of the upper cabinets.
11. To prepare for installing the base cabinets, lay a 6-foot level on the floor in several places to identify the high spot.
12. From the floor’s high spot, measure up 34_ inches and mark the wall.
13. From that mark, draw a level line around the kitchen walls. This line represents the top of the base cabinets.
14. Install the sink base cabinet first, centering it under the window.
15. Drive shims under the sink cabinet, if necessary, to raise it flush with the 34_-inch reference line marked on the wall.
16. Fasten the sink base cabinet to the wall studs with 3-inch screws. Before fully tightening the screws, slip a shim behind the cabinet to fill any void.
17. Check the cabinet for level from front to back; slide shims under the front of the cabinet, if necessary, to level it. Trim the shims with the utility knife.
18. Install the remaining base cabinets in a similar manner.
19. To secure peninsula or island cabinets, screw 2x4 blocking to the floor. Set the cabinets over the blocking, then screw through the toekick and into the blocking.
20. Cover the exposed end of the cabinets with a decorative panel. Drive in short screws from inside the cabinet.
21. Install all the drawers and doors.
22. Fabricate a filler strip to fit alongside the base cabinet that abuts the range. Fasten the filler by screwing through the cabinet face frame.
23. Once the base cabinets are installed, make a template for the new countertop.

I like Tom using the shims at the back of the cabinet. You can create uneven distorted cabinets if the backs of the cabinets get distorted by pressing this gap to the wall. Couple of thoughts. Because my wife and I were not that tall, I wanted to make my countertop a bit lower. What determined the minimum height was the dishwasher. They make a few shorter models. Whatever you do, it's the dishwasher that determines the minimum height. The other thing on my Christmas list for the past 40 years: A sink unit with no bottom. If you've ever spent a couple of hours working under the sink, you know that step up to the bottom is a pain in the back. Also the cheap chipboard most cabinet bottoms are made out of- they get a little water, swell up, then sag into garbage. A sink unit that had no bottom, but did have a fitted drain pan is long over due. Microwave. I like raising this off the counter so you have counter space underneath to the wall. It's better all round like this. Bugs. What we used to always do in New York City aka roach capital north of the tropics. Behind and under all base cabinets we'd spread a generous amount of roach powder. Also make sure you plug up all holes even if they're covered. Large holes use canned spray foam, smaller ones silicone caulking. Keeps the ants out. (I made one kitchen that they finally figured out how to get in through the electrical boxes. So I opened them up and caulked the flex connectors). Hope this helps.

@Adam Pagenkopf Set up? What's to set up?? Take your laser out of the case, put some batteries in, screw it on a tripod, and turn it on. That's the most you'll set up.

This was a very informative video because I will be installing two kitchen cabinets in my home and it was also good to know that I should use screws that are 3" long. Four lag screws should do the trick into wood studs!

I'm a journeyman plumber and Ive been following Tom Silva's work for years and he is the consumate "journeyman" ,does great work and knows what hes talking about. In Tom's defence ,I don't really think he intended this video to be a bonavide cabinet installation video,,,just an overview of a of a through presentation somewhere else.

I watched a video earlier today by a "cabinet installer" showing the need for cabinet levelers to do the job quickly. But I just witnessed a real pro with no laser (just measure from the floor and draw a line with a level) and no $60 worth of EZ -24 Levelers (10 cents worth of shims) do the job cheaper and faster.

@Laith Sadly, contractors are now taking advantage of clients and using the lumbers prices as a convenient excuse. It's BS and you are being scammed. Do a little pricing on your own and you will clearly see that. And I don't mean for pressboard garbage either.

@Laith 5/8" is perfectly fine. You can always go the RTA route as well. They are good quality cabinets, and more importantly, all wood. I have installed a handful of kitchens, with those, over the past 10 years, and they are pretty nice. Soft closing, full extensions, etc. At this stage, it's probably the only option to get decent quality at a decent price. I just had a potential customer show me his $19k estimate, just for cabinets, for a modest sized, about 20 cabinets, kitchen. It's absolutely nuts!!!

Don’t use 3” screws as you could hit pipes or wires, normally a 2.5” screw will keep you away from the center of the stud and not more than 1.5” deep into the stub; Electricians and plumbers normally keep the wires and pipes at least 1.5” deep.

Wish I had read this comment last weekend. I drilled into power and had to disassemble a good bit of the wall to make sure there wasn’t fire back there, and then replaced the wire, and fixed the wall board. Just a five minute job. ;D

I cut a 2x4 about 1" longer than than the set line. Then use it as a kick board to hold it in place while I screw it to wall. I angle it towards the cabinet and it will pretty much hold itself in place.

like the others said, the shims get cut down to match the surface of the cabinets. Then you install your 'toe kick' on the floor cabinets to hide any gaps and such.

I found it much easier and less work to install the bottom cabinets first and then using a couple of scissor jacks and a board across them, install the uppers (with the doors on). With these light weight jacks I can level and precisely position the cabinets without anybody having to strain to hold them exactly in place.

No real fast installer would ever install the bases first, there's no debate. I just started watching cab inst videos today and I saw a jack for the first time ever used on cabs. No one ever trying to make money uses one of those(maybe some high end custom shit with metal or something in it idk). I work for speed, all the videos I've seen have laser level BS and I haven't seen that in over 10 years on the job ONCE.

Nathan Rock Laser levels are actually pretty badass. And getting cheap these days. They are very versitile and fast. No need to hate on new technology. You know someone back in the day was talking shit about circular saws because they thought handsaws worked fine. I agree though...installing bases first is weird...never seen that done before. I used to build custom cabinets, not just hang prefabs...and we always hung uppers first.

I saw that you used shims to make sure everything was level. Do you leave the shims in place during the installation process? Do you take them out at the end or cut them down to the edge of the cabinet so you don't see them?

At 6:05 I see NM cable running along the inside of the cabinet. Is this not a code violation? It might not have been when this show was filmed. Correct me if I’m wrong but doesn’t any exposed wiring subject to possible damage have to be either run in conduit or some sort of metal sheathing?

I'm guessing the 2x4 added to the wall, behind the end cabinet to the right, was to bring the drawer out, away from the wall, so it could open past the trim around the sliding glass door. .

Upon further review: They did so many major changes to the mounting of the cabinets that they didn’t even bother referencing. The second cabinet they installed was mounted directly to the wall, then at 5:47 there is now a 2x4 behind it. Then at 6:05 where he closes the drawer, notice how it doesn’t close flush, and he had to push the right-side in to get it to close flush, then he pushes on it a second time just to be sure. They should make more of an effort to point out some of the problems they encounter, rather than just editing them out.

I more peeved that there was a designer involved and no1 said anything about a vent for that range. An AC in the kitchen is a terrible idea bc it will just eat up a lot of grease. Overall good tips bc im doing my moms kitchen (handmade cabinets and all) and needed some tips on leveling them bc there is a lump in the floor. Will definitely do it this way bc I'm not a pro like these youtube comentors who know better than everyone. Thanks again TOH!

Ditto. Get rid of that old sheet vinyl flooring and put down tile, wood, or wood-looking tile to really make it look new. Painting the walls first would also help. Its easier than painting after the backsplash and counters are installed (simply sand the paint where the backsplash will go, there's also an undercoating that can be put on it putting in a tile backsplash. ).

It looks like an older house (like mine), and those were built with quite small kitchens. Can't tell but maybe there will be a thin cabinet between the stove and fridge? Maybe for a trash can or pan storage racks?

I've got a similar sidewall drain in a bathroom. She could have offset the sink cabinet from the window to the right, then used a sink in the counter with an offset faucet mount to get the faucet centered in the window (the designer should have seen this option). Drop in a few 'mesh' shelves in the corner and you have a good place for storing cleaners & similar, while still having plumbing access.

I always install the lowers first, and then put "deadmen" on the lowers, so that I can rest the uppers while attaching them to the wall.

if she is doing a floating floor you do not install that under the cabinets. You install it up to the cabinets. Ceramic tile and such would be installed prior to the cabinet installation as the cabinets would rest on the tile.

@@youslappedme there is a cleanout there as well, it is likely this kitchen's sewer connection is very high on the outside due to topography or a half basement situation. the connection is too close to the wall, and a sanitary pipe would have to be at least 1.5", which couldnt be routed though 2X4 walls (25% of 3.5" load bearing wall is 0.875" diameter pipe, 25% of 2X6 is 1.375") as for the counter end, 5:39 you can see the draw do open to the kitchen, the hallway side is only decorative panels to match the adjecent draws (which opens hallway side).

Noobie here with questions: Even though it's going to be covered, why wouldn't you paint first or replace the missing tile / linoleum. if it's a budget thing i can understand but i don't see the price of a gallon of paint and some tiles adding too much cost?

They do have adj. feet, but on better 'high end' stuff. Remember, she got this flat packed, like an IKEA package and assembled it herself on a VERY tight budget. ;--)

IKEA kitchens usually have adj feet, unless you get the decorative kind where you don't put any baseboard around the bottom: but idk why anyone would want that... too much work cleaning all the time under there

concrete is very heavy. it is about 150lb per CFT if you have to level 1", that is 12.5lb/sqft of dead load at certain locations. Residential design allows 10psf ~15psf dead load and 40psf live load. it can add up really quickly and overload some older joist/beams that is already weakened (which might have caused the dip in the first place)

I recently moved into an apartment and I am beginning to see roaches coming from under my sink. I've noticed that there's spaces as to where no caulking in alot of places and in other places like when you remove the drawers the cabinets are not flush with the wall. What actions should I take???

If you can try to find the holes where they are coming in, then use "Great Stuff" or other spray foam sealant to seal em up or ask the landlord to. Also put down "boric acid" in between walls & cabinets, it last forever as long as dry & kills bugs.

Add a 1by 6 along top level line for base cabinets. Be sure it is secured to studs.

I have a upper corner cabinet similar to this one. Only difference being mine does not have a flat back, the back of mine goes all the way to the corner. What's the difference or point of this feature? Any help please? I'm mounting it in my bedroom and painting it. I'm hoping because it's not flat in the back that I won't be able to mount it or something dumb :(

Brandon Schneider Just a preference in design. Some people believe things will slide in to that far back corner and get lost, because they cannot be easily seen or reached.

The cabinets they had torn out previously may have not been the originals either. Chances are there was a corner sink, or some bad afterthoughts.

Yes they should, now they have to worry about dripping paint and drywall mud on the brand new cabinets they just installed. doesnt look like a super high end job, but if TOH is trying to teach people the right way to do something I dont know why they would skimp on such easy prep.

Most guys I know don't! The way they see it is Why paint and why do the floors first when you can put the cabinets up and just tile around the cabinets saving time and money! That way you can be on another job site!

I've been in the industry for over 10 years and I've never seen one person install the bases first except for the polemans/vanities. And those are the bathrooms BOOOOMMM! You slow af if you do bases for them to template first lol, that means you can't even do 1 unit a day.

Surprised you just screw your cabinets to the wall. We screw plates with a lip on the wall and hang the cabinet on them and can adjust them from that much easier to put up a cabinet yourself hanging it vs holding and screwing it

That's Ikea way and a weird way of doing it. Ikea is sent in flat stacks just like China cabs...and the quality is so f'ing horrible once an earthquake hits those are done.

Scott Reid it depends on the quality of the cabinets. For cheap particle boards with a white finisg screws will suffice. For finish cabinets that are stained then you can put cleats.

you can but should not. Floating floors need to breathe and they will expand and contract. You can install cabinets on a tile floor as the tile will not be moving.
