How to install motorcycle restrictor (Carb'd bikes)

In this video, I demonstrate how to install a motorcycle 33/47bhp restrictor kit for A2 license holders. This applies to bikes with carbs. In this video, I use an SV650S Curvy in order to demonstrate, but the method is very similar for many carbureted bikes.

Do you not have to change the air fuel ratio? I imagined restricting airflow yes would also limit how much fuel is drawn through but might cause fuelling issues

One question, when you restrict or derestrict a carburated motorcycle, do you have to sync your carburators after? Thank you

hello i had my bike ( Honda vt 600c) restricted in 2000 i went back to the shop a few years late to have it removed only to find the shop didn't exist anymore. So would my bike be restricted the same way? and if so can i remove it myself ?

Do you have any experience working on bikes (or cars) or is this a job that anyone with a screwdriver can do? Originally I thought it'd be safer paying a few hundred quid to get it professionally done but seeing how simple this looks was wondering if I could do it after all. Cheers

Hello @Simply Electronics ! I got a question for you. I try to get as much information as possible about this type of restriction. My question is, does it need to set the mixture for this kind of restriction? I am not very familiar with carburettors, but when it sucks in less air than before (without the plates) it obviously sucks less fuel too. But does the mixture remains the same? This part is not clear for me. Please answer me, I am thinking about that for days and I got nobody else to ask. Thanks!
@RealIcemansmooth

Should remain the same, just less is going into the engine

how does it feel acceleration wise compared to a smaller engined bike? can you notice a massive difference in restriction?

Great simple easy to follow video. mine has a ‘kickstart engineering’ restrictor kit on it, so is it just these washers that I’m looking out for? Nothing else? It says “plates fitted restricting the diameter of the inlet manifolds” So when it’s time to remove them, is it just this exact process but take the washers out instead of put them in? Rather not pay a garage just to derestrict the bike

But can i rev it to redline or that's limitted to for example 8k RPMs? Do engine coming up on rpms quickly as unrestricted or slowed down?
@SimplyElectronicsOfficial
@SimplyElectronicsOfficial 7 лет назад
It will still redline as normal, very little change in sound. But in gear it will just won't pull as hard so your acceleration will be weaker and your top speed will be restricted. But it doesn't take away from the fun if you don't know what your bike is like de-restricted. Don't try it either because you'll then be tempted not to restrict it. Top speed on my SV650S wouldn't do above 100mph when restricted. Derestricted it will do 135mph.
@adenlamb9916
@adenlamb9916 6 лет назад
most A2 bikes will do a 5sec 0-60 and around 100-120mph top speed which is fast enough for 2 years while you improve your riding.

Hi there. Great video. Do I need to change any fueling with the jets once I have installed the 47bhp restrictors?
@SimplyElectronicsOfficial
@SimplyElectronicsOfficial 8 лет назад
I never did, It was running ever so slightly lean but wasn't a problem. Just see how it runs, check for any stronger smells of fuel or any erratic behaviour after installing. If you want to rejet, you can do so.

@SV-du1rb
@SV-du1rb 3 года назад
you'll just have to have a look. Post 2016 bikes use electronic restrictors, such as a restricted ecu. pre 2016 can use mechanical restrictors which will either be washers in the intakes, such as the one in this video, or restrictions on the throttle grip/body which stop the throttle being opened all the way.
@micastillodearena6038
@micastillodearena6038 Год назад
Your bike is carburated, so I must be restricted on the carburators OR the throttle body (not being able to turn all the way)

@olliedavies3696
@olliedavies3696 7 лет назад
no, there is no law that says you must. However they could believe you are riding it unrestricted and impound your bike. So it would make sense to carry something saying it is.

@adenlamb9916

well it would make over the legal limit so its pointless. 47hp is enough for 2 years. also, if you were to get stopped it would be obvious that it was modified.

Also found a set from a German manufacturer, as I'm living in the Netherlands that may be better for me (includes a certificate accepted by dutch insurance). But, i may be able to manufacture the rings myself (at my technical university) if i would know the dimensions. Do you possibly know the dimensions of the rings for a GPZ500S? How can I restrict my KAWASAKI ER-5 (year 2000) which has 500cc to around 250cc?? I want to restrict it so much that it won't be violent when I accelerate. To be exactly like a smooth 125cc scooter. I want to make it accelerate smoothly so I can easily pass my A2 licence. I am sure if the examinator sees the bike acting really furious when I accelerate he would be like "Sir you do not have a control over your acceleration - FAILED!" LOL. The washers you have, where can I get them from? Plus I need them with even a smaller hole.
@SimplyElectronicsOfficial
@SimplyElectronicsOfficial 6 лет назад
Can I start off by saying you should be questioning if you can handle a big bike if you're wanting it to act like a 125cc. A 500CC bike will never act like a 125CC. Control of acceleration and feel of the throttle will be something you'll quickly learn in training. you need to be sure a bigger engine is for you. there is a large power difference, even when restricted compared to a 125cc. When you do your A2, You will be provided with a bike that is restricted and which passes specifications for an A2 License. You cannot change engine displacement, which means you can't turn a 500CC (Cubic centimetre) cylinder volume into 250CC. You can restrict throttle or air/fuel flow to limit engine power.

They won't. You have to officially write the change in the technical passport of your bike for the restriction to be valid.
