How to install Navifans Apple CarPlay Android Auto module on 2014 2015 2016 2017 Acura MDX

I'm sharing my experience installing the Navifans Apple CarPlay/Android Auto module on my 2017 Acura MDX. This module will work on any third-generation MDX that doesn't have built-in Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. It went fairly well, but I ran into some challenges.

Thanks again for the great instructions...just installed today and it was very fast and easy thanks to being able to just watch this video. I didn't need to notch out the air cleaner plate as i was able to tuck the ancillary harness wires (3 yellow inputs) behind the pullthrough in the glovebox. Can't get over how well this unit works in our 2017 MDX. The existing microphone works great, as do the call buttons on the steering wheel and the sound is top notch. I also like that you have the option to have AA or Carplay running on the top screen w/out sound while still listening to the OEM radio, which my wife prefers.

Let me know if you have any issues with the battery draining from the module. I Installed mine two weeks ago and woke up to a dead battery yesterday. I don’t know if it was the module or something else draining the battery, but let me know if you have similar issues!

@@drewjohnson8519 No battery draining issue for me. My longer time not using the car was about two weeks when I travelled, the car started up just fine when I was back.

Thanks for the video. I did it wrong with my 2017 RDX, assuming there was enough space at the bottom to hold the unit, but there isn't. Need to redo it this way.

It works! I almost gave up before finding this video. This is the best way (probably the only way) for RDX. For MDX, there is space under the head unit for the device.

There is a TF card slot by the dips. I use a 32GB micro-SD card for mp3 music and mp4 videos. It recognizes it and can play all the music, but only some of the mp4 files (probably due to format issues).

There is enough room underneath the factory stereo for the box. You couldn’t access it probably because you didn’t remove the little trim piece under the stereo. That also makes accessing those two bolts much easier, though one does have to loosen the soft trim pieces to the left and right first.

Thanks for this instruction. Few questions: 1) the the 360 camera still work? 2) Can you play video file from the SD Card? 3) do you need re-enter the radio code?

Great video... definitely going to give this a try. Am i correct that you need to use your phone apps for music vs being able to listen to the oem car stereo while using nav via carplay?

Correct. When you're in CarPlay or Android Auto, the audio would be fed in the aux input.

Great video the most detailed one on this topic. So quick question, i want to use Google maps and RU-vid music for example. I won't be able to listen to both via my car speakers? Also if its separate that mesns music will keep playing while the navigation directions are on.? Meaning you could miss listening to directions cuz music is playing loud.

Great video! I mostly interested in being able to use Google maps on my wife's 2015 mdx. Is it difficult to use Google maps using the factory control knob? Do you have to use voice controls with Google maps. Maps is designed for touch screen, is it too klugy to use the factory knob with Google maps? Or no, it's ok. Trying to judge if this is worth doing if our main interest is Google maps. Does anyone out there know of a video showing a demo of Google maps using the factory knob? I have searched but can't find a demo vid showing it.

You can still use your phone to enter address and search etc, and the CarPlay just acts as a secondary display to your phone.

What are the draw backs . How does wireless apply car play works through Bluetooth. How about wired car play plug it in the passenger usb port .

Both wireless and wired CarPlay work for my 2017 RDX. The wireless one works through Bluetooth and WiFi connections.

My 2017 RDX has no problem with factory Mic. I have the one from Sinairyu.

Not this particular model, but you may find a similar one on AliExpress. I suspect the install would be more or less the same.

When you turn off /on your car , do you need to press menu button every time ?

No, it turns on automatically through the wireless connection. It's on every time I turn on the car.

Does the reverse cam still work fine?

Yes! It switches to the factory camera when in reverse. Then it switches back to CarPlay when in drive or park.

How did you get the oem mic from the car to work if you did? Any time I take a call they can’t hear me unless I switch to speaker phone and Siri can’t hear me for reply’s

@@oelouedghiri not yet. I was talking with them and they said it has to due with the separate mic wire. They said it has to plug into the mic header behind the mirror and then ran to the box.

@@oelouedghiri the interesting thing about it is that it works once when I tell it to get directions or text someone but then the second time when it ask if I’m ready to send the text or whatnot it can’t hear me anymore

Does it still use the original stereos equalizer? I have the stereo set up to my preference and speakers and don’t want it sounding bad.

It uses the AUX which you can still maintains the original stereos equalizer. The unit itself also has sound setting with equalizer. You can adjust both to get what you want to hear.

Does this unit stay on all the time? Will it kill the battery?

No. It uses very little power during standby. We travelled two weeks and came back up home, our RDX started with no issue.

Thanks. I’d like to have it connected to switched power. My phone stays connected to the wireless while in my house. I can’t play any sound without having to disconnect first. Anyone know what the constant power wire is and if it can be modified to switched power?
