I will guide you through what Orbiter is, where to download it, and how to install it. I'll also touch on some essential addons, where to find them, and how to install them. All links discussed in the video are below.

**Video Correction: You do NOT extract the hi-res textures using 7-zip as I stated at 21:40 in the video. Once you download the .tree files, they need to be copied into the 'Textures/PlanetName/Archive' folder within your Orbiter installation! So if you're installing the hi-res Earth textures, they would go into the 'Textures/Earth/Archive' folder in your Orbiter directory.

Excellent little Tutorial. You prompted me back into Orbiter after many years of absence. Orbiter 2016 (with the high res add-ons) is stunning and incredibly immersive in 4K.

Hi Tex, great tutorial! Just one small caveat re. highres textures to avoid confusion: the .tree files you download don't need to be extracted. They use a custom compressed format that Orbiter can read directly. You just need to copy the files to a specific location in the Orbiter directory tree, as explained in the installation instructions linked from the download page.

Another thing maybe, If you install alot of addons use JSGME , it's an addon manager where you can install and uninstall you addons with one click, leaving the main vanilla orbiter intact so if an addon ruins it you won't have to install all that again. It's very easy to install , very easy to manage, i use it on almost every game or simulator i modify with addons and mods ex: DCS, IL-2, SH-5, Orbiter 2016 and so on.

Quick comment: Transx2 is transx2.dll, just another flavor of transx that comes with the orbithangar download (which btw replaces orbiter's built-in transx.dll anyway) only with a red color "evil twin" scheme. The author put it there to enable you to have two different transx modules active. This allows two instances of transx MFD in the same ship. Meaning that you can model a new flight program in transx2 at any time without erasing the flight program you are actually flying on with transx.

Wow, that is an awesome tutorial! I loved Orbitor 2010 and the Apollo simulations. Do you know if they still have add-on's for the Apollo missions?

Orbiter is a great space simulator but due to its unorganized "add-on" culture, the install can quickly turn into a dog`s breakfast inundated with error messages. Then one is compelled to uninstall and start again only to repeat the process. Thanks for the great tutorial.

When adding addons to orbiter 2016 is it really as simple as extracting them to the main orbiter directory? I've found that it doesn't always work. For instance, I extracted the B-29/x-1 scenario to the main obiter folder but it won't show up when I launch the game. I'm also trying to install Apollo nassp v8.0 and it hasn't worked. What is the proper procedure to install these and other addons?

@@omkishorenariki572 Sadly I have abandoned hope of getting this going again. I'm sure it's possible but I've lost the will to make it happen. Sorry. It was a glorious run and a fantastic piece of alturism by the developers and those that added to it over the years. It got many of my lifehours and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Fonz van der Linden as long as you install 2016 in its own directory then you do not need to uninstall 2010.

thx 4 tutorial, gr8 sim btw wish i'd found this earlier,,..... ok in the main repository orbiter page, as you know there are a few other celestial bodies which have been added mercury for onw, but inside the sub folders there is no mercury folder like there is with the moon earth etc.........do i therefore just create a folder called mercury and put those hi-res tex files in there?......cheers

When I open the Orbiter_ng application and select D3D9 in the modules the video tab won't pop up, when I try to run it says its running in server mode with no video engines attach, please help I'm desperately trying to get it to work.

Use the Windows MSI installer, and if your running linux run it under WINE. works like a charm.

I downloaded the earth high res textures and followed the instructions to the installation but didn't noticed any visual difference close to the ground or at altitude. Anyone can link a demo video please?

My D3D9 atmosphere is not brilliant at all like yours is. It looks just like the atmosphere using the default/D3D7 graphics. Any ideas?

There is necessary to double-click on Delta-glider folder in 10:16. I am totally new to Orbiter and I did not expect the double-click.

Hey Tex I know this video is kinda old, but I'm just converting to 2016 now LOL (It was hard for me to say goodbye to the arrow freighter) So does GS2 ever randomly force you to infinitely roll right ? I find myself not using GS2 often because it just causes me ship to have a stroke. I normally use the XR-2 like you.

Im able to load the program and use it a little bit it doesn't like me going between views or through the atmosphere. I've tried installing 2010 but can't get the directx runtime for windows 10. Any idea where to best figure out how to trouble shoot crashes. I really love this idea and have spent 30 hours trying to figure it out. I'll have to ditch it if It won't stop crashing. I'll be so disappointed!

Orbiter 2016 has still many bugs. Therefore I still have Orbiter 2010 extracted. By the way, it runs sooo much smoother on Ubuntu or Lubuntu (there I tried it) using wine.. You just have to extract the zip (faster than "installing") and open a terminal. There you type "wine orbiter.exe" and you're ready. If you didn't use wine before: 1st install it using "Software" application or using apt. Then open a terminal and type winecfg + enter before you launch orbiter.

Hello, everytime I turn Space Atlantis "Launch into Sunrise" scenery on, everything's going OK, but after 2 or 3 seconds my rocket will appear in deep space, and it's rotating very quickly. It also happens with the other scenieries, but some work as they should. Can you help me, please? :D Good video btw.

and i'm crashing every time i launch orbiter (without mods). I guess it doesn't recognise the gpu on my laptop since it only gives me the options for RGB emulation on video tab... That's bad since i really wanted to play this game :( EDIT: Fixed by installing dxd9 mod... Now it's just the sound mod that doesn't work. The installer in unresponsive after clicking browse button

what about space shuttle ultra? after installing it (just dragging it into orbiter's root folder) i launch the game and i have no earth texture, its alll white, i cant explain that, it did work for me previusly but after reinstalling orbiter it gave me this problem, anyone knows how to fix it??

When I launch Orbiter, it always lags and freezes to the point I have to restart the app, why? My computer is a gaming laptop as well, I’m expecting it to have a good CPU.

First, thank you for posting this video. As I am going through the installation process and attempting to run the D3D9 client, I do not see the video tab in Orbiter_ng and when I run a scenario, I get a text screen but not the GUI (it has the following statement: running in server mode; no graphics client attached). Do you know what I need to do to correct this? Again, thanks.

I think you need to install the DX9 runtime libraries. The link can be found on the website where you downloaded the DX9 client.

You have to launch Orbiter using the Orbiter_ng icon. If you're doing that already and you don't see the video button, then I'm afraid I can't tell you why it wouldn't be visible. Sorry! Have you tried searching for help on Orbiter-Forum?

The most likely reason is that you didn't activate the D3D9client module on the Modules page.

Same problem here. No video tab. When I launched orbiter_ng the second time it throws an error: d3dx9_42.dll is missing on the system. Fixing that does not seem to be easy.

You need to install the correct DirectX runtimes from Microsoft. The online documentation for the D3D9 client has the link.

Is there a way to get an addon program that aloows full functionality & programing of flight controlls like the Honeycomb yoke & throttle? Orbiter is a cool space sim & all but controller supoort & functionality/programing sucks or at least is not very user friendly. Theres no obvious way to program buttons & keys like in a flight sim.

Hi Texfilms, I'm having an issue with TransX. As I cannot find any info on the forums I figures I'd ask you. Every time I try to use the MFD the game will crash. I have followed all of your instructions but only TransX crashes. Nothing in my orbiter.log suggests what the issue is.

That's a strange issue. What version of TransX do you have? It's been a while since I downloaded it, so I wonder if there has been an updated version recently that caused some issues. Another thing which I am not sure of, but is probably mentioned in the TransX document, is that certain Microsoft Redistributable packages are required for TransX.

See my other post. You probably downloaded TransX for the 2010 version like me. Check the filename. It should be TransX-2016.04.04-MMExt-2016. It should not end with ..2010.

Good video! I have a question, after installing Transx mod along with the required extension, I started the game and everything was working fine until I clicked on the Transx option within the game, it crashed, and now it will keep crashing right when you launch a simulation, the only way it'll go back to normal is if I delete all the Transx files, any ideas as to what causes this?

That's a new one for me. I was just commenting on another post below about TransX crashing the sim. I'm not sure if a new version of TransX was released that might be bugged or if it's an issue of missing Microsoft Redistributable packages. Have you checked the doc for TransX to make sure all requirements are met for it? If all else fails, you might want to post about it on the forum. It could be a known issue from something else causing the problem.

I ran into the same problem. Then I noticed that Orbiter would also crash in the same way when pushing the Radio/mp3 Panel button. Then I tried two new fresh orbiter installations with only OrbiterSound and another with only the TransX MFD installed. In both situations, so also without DX9, Orbiter crashes. I can't find the solution though. The event viewer does not provide any usefull information, but one time during troubleshooting Windows almost froze, and I was able to see a message about Direct3DDevice or something. I would appreciate any help on this.

Solved it. The crash when pushing the Radio/mp3 Panel button seems to be a known issue. I expect you to have the same problem. But OrbiterSound is working fine besides that. Don't need this panel anyway. The problem with TransX is actually a bit ashaming. I happend to download the 2010 version.. After scrolling down the 2016 version is there to download. That one works fine.

I’ve downloaded the d3d9client.zip file (from the only known location) and it doesn’t contain a .dll module, only the source code and config files. Can someone please post the correct file somewhere or tell me what I’m doing wrong? I’ve followed TexFilm’s installation procedure (by unzipping the file into the root directory) and the files contained within the .zip get extracted; just no .dll Thanks for anyone’s assistance in this matter.

You're missing a required DirectX file. you need to download and install the directx9 redistributable from microsoft. it can be found here --> www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=34429

Really depends on your system. You will definitely want to use the D3D9 client for the best frame rates.

Thanks for the quick reply. Also, I use WinRAR, and when I downloaded D3D9, it downloaded in a zip file, I did the instructions as followed. When I opened Orbiter_ng, under modules, there was no section for graphics engine, do you know why this is?

I've never seen this problem, sorry! You might make sure you have DirectX libraries updated. Once you extract the compressed file, assuming all files were extracted to proper place, then you should see the D3D9 option to check in the modules tab as I discussed in the video.

I don't know of any videos, but all the keyboard controls are conveniently listed in the Orbiter manual.
