Its nice cornice that. All the new builds use shadow line system but its a bit of a pain to paint. Give me old fashioned cornice.

Agree mate. We went P50 shadow line in our last reno to go for the modern architectural look, but to be honest I prefer this as well.

Great tutorial, thanks for sharing! EPS plaster-coated coving is absolutely the way to go for DIY jobs. It's budget-friendly, moisture-resistant, easy to install and paint. I've used Homemerce for coving and trim in my whole house - top quality, huge range of styles, and the best value around. Everything they sell is meant to simplify DIY projects and provide a high-end finish.

Great work! Some good tips! Small tip from a plasterer to a fellow bro plasterer! Try a gauger trowel instead of the plastering trowel, easier & quicker to lick the cornice with the mud!

Hi James, nice video. I’ve muddled my way through installing a fair bit of 90mm Sydney cove cornice on a large owner build project. This included two challenging rooms that had walls at odd angles ( both 112.5 degree and 67.5 degree corners ) but also raked ceilings at 30 degrees. Took me a while to work out the correct way to joint the corners so they looked perfect, this involved small wedged shape pieces in the corners to adjust for the odd angles. Anyway my question re your vid. You say to mark down 90 mm on the wall. Wonder if this should have an extra couple of mm added to account for the cement thickness. Obviously a 90mm cornice will project onto the ceiling and walls by 90 mm plus cement thickness. I assume if you do an exact 90 mm mark on the wall and put a nail in at that point to sit the cornice on , then you’ll end up with a slight rotation of the cornice getting more than 90 mm projection onto the ceiling but importantly the corners won’t exactly align. Cheers.

This is awesome, thanks so much. Don't mind taking the extra time to get it right, what's a few hours compared to the lifetime it will look good? Top video and very clear, thanks for the real, constructive help!

Great video ! Thanks a lot !! Quick question, I need to install a plaster cornice but the wall is in Brick. What would you recommend to hold it in place during the drying time ? (considering I may not want to actually drive screw into the brick wall everywhere, looks a bit tedious)

I am randomly looking around to find home repair vids. Just in case the Poop show in Texas turns bad. So far no busted pipes for me. Anyways, I had to do a double take because you kinda look like an actor called Grant Bowler lol.

Hi was wondering how I would do this on a tiled wall? Obviously I can't drive screws in to brace the cornice

If you are marking out using your coving offcuts at the start - doesnt this rely on a perfectly level ceiling? shouldnt this be done with laser level so that the bottom line of the coving is true level. Any discrepancies can be made up against the ceiling where everything will be painted white ( usually) . Im looking at a big renovation job as a DIYer so this video is great thanks!

Very slow way if doing it.laser measure two short ladders and a plank to cut on and a tapepro cornice head will speed thing up about 50%

Agreed mate, most professional contractors would have that gear, but for the average person looking to DIY they are only going to have the basic tools.
@andrewoshea35

You've shown a very informative and basic, but true, installation of cornice. Some people forget, learn the 'old ways' first, then, if you ever have issues with the new way, the 'old way' is always the solution. Excellent workmanship all round, from the explanation, fixing, and filming

He installed it upside down. lol. A cornice like this should be oriented as a cyma recta, but it was installed as a cyma reversa. Most people won't know the difference, but it's not correct according to classical rules and tradition.
@OurBuild
@OurBuild Год назад
Wrong
@CheeseBae
@CheeseBae Год назад
@@OurBuild nope, I've installed miles of moldings and read dozens of books on classical architecture. Look at any book on the classical orders, the final molding, the cyma, is a cyma recta. It's either upside down or you installed a molding that isn't a cornice. If you like it, then who cares? Either way, it's not traditional.
@OurBuild
@OurBuild Год назад
@@CheeseBae Well if you're installed miles of 'Sydney 90mm' cove by Knauf then you've installed it upside down - www.knaufapac.com/en_au/products/cornice/decorative-cornice/sydney-90mm-profile-decorative-cornice.html
@CheeseBae
@CheeseBae Год назад
@@OurBuild fair enough, you installed it according to the manufacturer and have an excuse, but it doesn't change the fact the manufacturer designed something that is historically incorrect. Not surprising as 99% of modern manufacturers have no understanding of classicism.

Not sure if it's been mentioned but that is not Plaster Cornice that is Gib Cove. Plaster Cornice is made out of 100% Plaster, not with a paper surface and actually takes real tradesman skill. That Cove was made so anyone could hang it, just like sandable plaster, when I started they were still polishing 3 coats wall paper finish 4 coatrs paint. How things have changed.
