Came here for pool ideas left here with some life knowledge and wisdom. Thanks man. I needed to hear that and I dont think stumbling upon your page was an accident. Thank you!
hey brother!...thanks for writing in!...that's great to hear, its great to connect with people in this way!...best of luck with your pool project and kick butt in life too! stay real
Thank you Mike! Giving credit to those dudes is righteous! Make more videos on setting coping and prepping mortar bed... Keep that wizardry coming, I'm listening and watching!
thanks for the great comment brother...I'm working on another pool remodel video...Ill try to incorporate the coping installation breakdown and motor bed prep in there also...that's a great video idea that we haven't done yet!! Stay Real!
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-L-8N8Dv7Hh0.html whats up brother!...here is the video that you requested, I gave you a shout out at the intro so I hope that you are cool with that check out the vid and I hope that it helps you out in some way!...lmk if you have any questions
Wow watching this was like being at work. In fact I was tiling today. Been building, tiling, repairing gunite pools for twenty three years now. It's definitely hard, dirty, dangerous work but it's what we do. Great vid man. I enjoyed watching.
right on brother thank you for writing in and for the great comment...these videos are lots of fun to make and it is a great way to connect with people...good luck with your pool project and let us know if you need any help!
Thanks, loved the video. I also have a large crack in my bond beam. I plan to fill it with laticrete 3701 fortified mortar bed - any thoughts on the product for filling the crack? What mortar bed product did you use?
im not familiar with the product that you mentioned however we are really looking for some that cures fast and sets up at least 5500 psi we like spec mix rapid set products plastic cement / #30 sand if you are fixing large chunks that are missing you can you sack concrete w/form boards with an ad mix for bond ...masons glue i think
So im working on my pool took coping and tile out now to build back broken plaster you use typs s mortar? and does it need waterproofed or does the tile and thinset overtop keep it from seeping through?
I do not recall us ever waterproofing the mortar bed ...usually we repair the base with spec mix or rapid set product lay the thin set and tile then grout hope this helps lmk if you have more questions
right on brother thats what its all about this will be same as bathroom or kitchen but outside 1 pass demo 1 pass repairs and level base (spec mix/rapid set) 1 pass install
All I needed was your maestro. Him and my husband could of remodeled our pool lol. I guess you can come and inspire them as they work LMAO. But seriously awesome video. Although, if I were the customer I would of replaced that ugly old coping :)
Maybe one day you can do a vid about the variations and differences between concrete mixes. Like what type to use for tile, coping , Gunite and plaster. Either way there’s no better channel out there than yours Vato.
That's a good idea thank you for writing in and suggesting that When you go to home Depot or the building supply yard it's easy to get confused but basically there's mortar products then set products and concrete products Rapid set Make some products that we like to use and we use often such as rapid set Mason mix brown bag and rapid set cement all Quikrete also makes products that we like to use such as their hydraulic cement As far as concrete mixes anything will do in your 90 lb bag varieties And for plaster is always white sand and white cement and then you make your variations from there Hope this is helpful 💪
Thanks for demo. I have big cracks behind the some tiles. You mentioned, you use "high bond cement"to fill the cracks. Where and what brand I can get from?
Usually any rapid set product would work that would be their repair mortar or cement all products Quikrete also has a hydraulic cement that we will use in and around the pool area that is also effective You can find any rapid set products at your local Home Depot or hardware store
@@UltimatePoolGuy When you use Cement All to fill cracks in the bond beam, how long do you have to wait before you can put thinset and tile over it? Are you able to set the tile that same day? Or do you have to keep it moist and let it cure for a few hours (or overnight) before you apply the thinset?
@@jbh123stl rapid set products - that include cement all can be used shortly after application...there are usually some set times and suggestions on the bag of material
I'm not familiar with that specific product I always recommend to people to do what is most common for your region and climate We are based in Los Angeles California and the methods you see here in this video or for a concrete structure pool We like rapid set products and quickrete brand for a lot of stuff
Hey brother, do you normally apply a waterproofing membrane (like Redguard or 9235 waterproofing) before you apply the thinset for the pool tile? If not, why? and if you do, when do you need to apply that? Thank you very much (I am in Florida otherwise I would hire you for sure)
Water transmission membrane no we do not however not could be a regional thing we will do demolition one pass for repairs and 1 pass for installation of and the 1 pass for grout
@@UltimatePoolGuy I was asking because there are some mortar thinset for glass tile that already have the impermeability (like Ardex X77) and that if that would be sufficient. Thank you for the reply!
yes sir stuff with the admix already in it is good to go should need nothing else after that you can always add some masons glue to your mix just to be sure this sounds good
I’m looking to do a build by owner pool and want to do the tile. I’ve done floor tile but never on pools. Do you use any special adhesive or grout ? Thanks
hello thank you for writing in...yes that is a great comparison pool tile to floor tile... 1.strip old material 2.clean and repair base...want smooth and chunck-age free...repair with rapid set products and make level 3.set 6in. water line tiles 3x3, 2x2, 6x6, etc...with non-sag thin set - we like pro lite products...set each piece nice and level all the way around 4.clean joints and grout with sanded grout
pro lite thin set www.doitbest.com/products/261276?gdffi=46857429cc1343fcae2c0324cc87e14a&gdfms=9FD80D7B92CF4CEFBAEAA0DC9F93168F&gclid=Cj0KCQjwho7rBRDxARIsAJ5nhFraOu9JF5kQaLGXIpfcOR0Y3Mtyo29rq2eaQ1kJ4ZtaQUAiQ9wFJckaArGhEALw_wcB
Hey man I have a concrete deck and pool. I’m replacing my waterline tiles. There is a plastic “retaining ring” (not sure what it’s called) that the top of the tiles go behind. Do I need to keep that with the new tiles or can I remove it and grout the top of the tiles right to the bottom of the concrete deck? I don’t know what it’s for besides maybe holding the top of the tiles in place, but I don’t know if it’s necessary either. Thanks for the knowledge bro and videos I’m learning tons!
this sounds like the expansion joint at the top of the tile line done with plastic you can and should re do this with mastic//silicone joint not grout if you use a hard mason product like grout there is no room for expansion like the plastic joint or silicone joint and tile will fall off this sounds like east coast vinyl pool check with local codes and what is common for your area
Thank you so much for the reply man, you’re awesome! I’m in El Paso Texas and the pool was built with the house back in the late 90’s. Outdated codes maybe? I’ll look. Thanks again!
Hey man is there a specific “mastic joint compound” that you would recommend? Most of the compounds I’m finding is for the top of the deck, not where the bottom of the deck meet the top of the tiles. Thanks so much for your help!
You should be able to get away with tubes of silicone from home Depot or your local building supply these would be the same types of tube silicone that would go in a caulking gun this is for the top of the tile under the deck
You can apply this and wipe away the excess with a folded paper towel your finger or a folded piece of cardboard to leave The joint nice and clean and remove the excess silicon
1x1 tile can sometimes be problematic around the swimming pool water line because it's so small little pieces will fall off into the water over time I like to use one by two as my smallest water line tile Yes a 6-in water line is normal or standard for swimming pool construction you can do other things but a 6-in water line is traditional I tell clients that 1x2 tiles is the smallest we go Good luck 💪
Hello, I have a 36 yr. old vinyl liner pool 18' round with bullnose coping and was just informed by my contractor that it would be best to fill the pool with dirt and close it out because the coping is shot. He indicated that the cost to repair wouldn't be a good return on investment. Would this be your recommendation? Can I buy the coping and do it myself? Thank you!
a vinyl liner pool that is 36 years old is a very old pool vinyl liner pools are not constructed like a concrete structure pool sad looking or completely broken coping is not a reason to not use a pool or to close it completely a pool that has structural cracking and leaks uncontrollably is a reason to shut a pool down completely a pool closure is also dependent on the region that you live and there may be other factors at play here that we are not aware of you can always circle back around to the contractor that suggested a complete closure and ask for the merits behind that we see pools all the time in various states of disrepair that are able to maintain healthy water/water quality conditions and the pool is still being used
if you are trying to sell this property with a broken pool and do not want to or can not do the repairs you can always sell the property with the pool broken
Thank you for this video! I have a 30 year old pool and a bucket of tiles that fell out. I’m going to try and fix them. So I need to apply thin set then add grout? What kind of grout?
Sure you can do that So your pieces don't move around on you We like "prolite non sag" thinset also available from home Depot I think you'll enjoy making tile repairs It's always peaceful to be poolside working
Dear ultimate Pool Guy thank you for your videos they are excellent. Will you please help me understand these questions: your bender board is about a half inch above the bond beam. And level. Do you then pour your mortar mix up to the edge of your level bender-board, let that dry and Then set your coping with thin set.?
Yes And the half inch rise you're talking about ends up being the depth of the mortar bed for the coping so the taller your Bender board is there the deeper your mortar bed will be

right on brother that is a good one that i will keep in mind...thank you for writing in in short lean to scaffolds have been around since the beginning of pool work but are not legal and not osha approved so these are made by each technician and welded together usually a set (2) of shorts and longs to set up around the pool with wooden planks
Hi there , i need to replace the tile above the plaster and the coping , can it be done without doing the plaster ? my plaster is still good . thank you
Hello Thank you for writing in and for your question Yes you can get yourself an angle grinder with either a four and a half or a 6-in wheel depending on the size of the angle grinder and you can get inside of your pool on a set of scaffolds and you can cut yourself a line underneath your tile at the plaster line with your diamond blade This now gives you a 6 in path where you can demo out your tile and create a new title line and then the bottom diamond blade cut would be filled with grout
Hello Thank you for writing in It is possible and I believe you can see in the video we are using a 2 ft and 4 foot Bubble Level to establish level and follow level around the pool as we work We will typically save finding level with a water level for when we are working completely blind like establishing Plumb level for coping installation or setting the guide wires for shotcrete Hope this helps
@@joerondeau9814 ok great thank you for taking a look at some of our work...there are lots of other great videos on the channel that you may enjoy stay real out there!
Thank you for the suggestion A lot of what we use could be sourced from Home Depot or Lowe's They are general building products but we use premium versions of what's available Hope this is helpful
Been doing pool tile for 15 years and I can assure you that pool hack job will leak. Looks like someone made a video without knowledge of the pool industry in and out…..
@2StrokeMichael I always heard pool tile needs waterproof behind it to avoid efloressance. Is that just not being done here or is it already part of the bond beam?
This set Or spec mix Should work out fine you can also look at rapid set products those are also very effective and should be available at your local hardware store Such as rapid set mortar mix
Hi there , i need to replace my pool 120vo to 12v lcd lights , can any electrician do that or it have to be an electrician with pool experience? THANK YOU.
A lot of residential electricians do not like to work on swimming pool equipment however you can call around and usually any licensed electrician can handle this type of work
The decking around the pool was removed and not replaced as part of the work The concrete decking around the pool pressing against the pool coping is almost always the cause of the stress that causes the crack in the bond beam So removing the deck and not putting it back with concrete and putting grass in its place alleviates this pressure But otherwise yes The best way to address these types of cracks that go left and right in the bond beam is to remove the coping pieces completely in any of the damaged areas build the bond beam back up and replace the coping Thank you for writing in and for your comments 👍
@@UltimatePoolGuy thanks for your reply. It happened to my pool and it’s only 3 years old! I can’t find anyone to fix it. I live in St George, Utah. You don’t travel do you?
It's a 5 1/2 hour drive so it's not terrible I would have to ask you to cover some travel costs and any boarding So we might be able to work something out if you want to send me a more detailed description of what's going on with some photos to my email I'm happy to take a look ultimatepoolguy@gmail.com Thanks 🙏
@@UltimatePoolGuy thanks so much for replying. I tried doing it with Portland cement recommended by a pool place and it didn't last long. Would you recommend anything to fix gunite in my pool? Problem was I let ice build on the tiles and couple popped off but Also some chunks of gunite underneath them. Would like to patch them to make it look a bit better. Would be nice to have some type of gunite spray cans lol
You can use rapid set products also available from home Depot for your areas that need small patching or repairs Rapid set mortar Rapid set cement all Are both good
@@UltimatePoolGuy I will do that.... any use in me trying to match colors or is that a loosing battle ? I noticed all cement gets washed out to light gray pretty quickly
Spec mix type s And rapid set motor mix In general rapid set products we like to use around pools They have a few different kinds of products available from home Depot and Lowe's type suppliers For your spec mix you can also add Mason's glue for better bonding strengths Hope this helps
Love the video Mike. A video on grouting the inside of the skimmer may help us out here. I find so many freshly built pools where leak detection finds a leak in the skimmer throat. And include a grout vs. epoxy repair breakdown in said throat. I hate that so many brand new pools get epoxy patch jobs but wonder if it even matters. God bless brother.
In Los Angeles we prefer grout or rapid set products in the skimmer mouth over epoxy Thank you for the video recommendation This is a common issue and a common area where their problems often times the skimmer mouth is plastic mating to the back of the pool which is cement
semantics brother... get busy working and grinding and less time nit picking like a stay at home mother, stay productive and roll with the punches you also forgot pig snot?...where does that apply? thanks for checking us out and writing in...ill give you a shout out on our next release stay real!
the equipment I select for each project represents the best performance choices for that particular pool configuration...I try to leave the client and pool with the best set-up possible and set them up for long-term success!...my ego isn't really attached to any singular product or brand, although I do have my preferences hope that helps
Two things ... 1st. Is it an specific thin set or you can use any type??? 2nd freaking Alfredo is having a pool party he just need a 12 pack of Modelo .... Jajaja
This is a concerned kind of a job first of all you need to provide safety PPE (Personal protective equipment ) for your workers man, no goggles while grinding what happens if he damages his eyes, Oh Workers Comp ok if no WC the PO (property owner) gets the responsibility Big Time I am not trying to discourage your work just a reminder to be safe at work.
That crack is not in the bond beam. That crack is the mortar bed that adheres the coping to the bond beam. You should always replace those coping and mortar bed before installing new tile. This is BAD information. 30 years renovating pools on the east coast.
UltimatePoolGuy - you need Morgan Freeman to do the narration 😁 Good video though. The pool company put the wrong coping on my pool, had it replaced with large 3-4’ shaped blue stone, but the pool company were jackasses and just filled in behind the tiles where they removed the coping and put sand in and now the whole beam is gone. So I’m cleaning out all of the sand and removing the tiles without damaging the plaster under it and will have to rebuild the whole beam. Then install all new tiles. Just been reading up and watching videos on acid spraying to prep the old concrete and then make the bonding coating and now just trying to see if I should be using mortar or Portland-mortar to rebuild the new beam. Your video was very helpful, that’s a huge project and your team is doing nice work 👍
I would love to k ow how to install waterline tile in the deep end where I cannot stand to reach it. I used a ladder it slid out from under me ride it down scraping knees hands elbows there has to be a way to
