How to install portable AC unit when you have casement windows (or crank out windows)

Here’s how I have installed my portable AC units when I have crank-out windows, also known as casement windows. It’s not as straightforward as when you have a single hung window, but it’s not that complicated either. This project took me about two hours of work.

Why not just use the insert that came with it and then plexiglass for the remaining part of the window? Seems like it would be a lot easier at least. That's what I was planning to do.

This is great, I'm thinking about getting a portable A/C but im in a basement and i have a single louver window with a screen.I think this would be a good solution....thank very much.

Thanks I really appreciate the feedback. The easier option (but would block out light) is to use some heavy-duty cardboard.

Your an AC saver. What thickness did you use? We have single pane windows so gonna use blank sheets to help with our other windows.

How do you keep rain or bugs from coming into the vent?

Hello, how do you fix the plexiglass to the window frame so that it doesn't fall off, and get stuck to the frame?
@oldcountryhouse
@oldcountryhouse 2 месяца назад
Basically I made it a really snug fit. Then I used masking tape, which work really well on two of my three windows. In the window it didn’t work so well, I tapped a really small nail partially in.

I noticed that the crank window isn't open all the way, is it okay to just leave it partially open or is it better to just leave it fully open or maybe no difference at all?
@oldcountryhouse
@oldcountryhouse Месяц назад
Opening just a little might not allow the air to move freely (you don’t want to be sucking back in the ultra-warm air you’re also pushing out). Though that won’t be an issue if you only have one hose. I don’t think you need it open entirely (mine does not up to a 90 degree angle anyway), just enough to be pulling new air).

Yeah I also agree. You will want it all the way open to get the best air exchange for cooling otherwise you are working your ac harder and it well use more power to operate.

Thanks for the video. I had ordered the Hisense 8K BTU 4-in-1 portable A/C from Costco and was wondering how to fit the exhaust panel to my crank-out windows Looks like you might have the same portable A/C. Where did you buy the Duraplex (sp?) from?
@oldcountryhouse

Thanks for the feedback. It’s been working well so far. I got the duraplex from Lowes.

Thanks for the video and tips. Question: couldn't you have just used the window vent piece provided with the ac unit, and then just cut the duraplex to fit above it? So you wouldn't need to cut out the vent sockets? Seems easier, but also having the whole window duraplex looks cleaner I'd suppose.

Good question, yes I could have and indeed thought about. Couple reasons I didn’t though. Most importantly I wanted to make it easy to close the window without having to remove and reinstall anything, which I can now so the set up is there for the whole season. Secondly I didn’t want to factor in angle joins that would be needed. Finally I wanted something that would be ‘snug’ in the screen slot…if I did it the other way and someone opened the window a faction of an inch more it would be loose right away.

What size duraplex do you use? thickness wise?
@oldcountryhouse
@oldcountryhouse 2 месяца назад
I can’t remember what I used when I made this video but when I remade them this year I used 0.080 duraplex, and it’s ok in my small window, but not sturdy enough in my bigger windows.

Did you need to secure the vent openings/hoses to the plexiglass? I’m going to be doing this, but don’t want the hoses to be falling out.
@oldcountryhouse
@oldcountryhouse 3 месяца назад
The end of the hose had little clips on it, so as long as it was a snug fit, it clipped/snapped into place nicely.

Your idea is a good one! The only thing is your setup is not burglar-proof. If you run that at night with no one in the room, it can easily be pushed through. There must be a way to make this type of setup secure to a casement window?

any window ac can be pushed in through from thieves
@johnwang9914

My guess is that if no one was home, you could just have the AC shutoff and the window closed... Window AC's have always been a security risk unless you bolt them into a support frame underneath that's bolted to your house. However, I think that it would be worthwhile to look to see if there are any government subsidies for a heat pump to be installed as that could make up the difference between a professionally installed heat pump either split or central versus the portable units. Of course, if you're renting, the portable units might be your best option.

What do you do when you have a screen for casement windows?
@oldcountryhouse
@oldcountryhouse 9 месяцев назад
I removed the screen and used plexiglass. No need for the screen while I have the AC unit installed.
@UNGL8R
@UNGL8R 7 месяцев назад
Bro, could you have just cut a round hole in the window glass (like you would for a cat door) and put a standard 100 mm fitting through that?
@oldcountryhouse
@oldcountryhouse 7 месяцев назад
Probably, but would have required a new fitting. I was just utilizing the fitting that came with the AC unit.
@bw4680
@bw4680 3 месяца назад
You are a fool! You aren’t understanding what @UNGL8R is saying! You way over complicated the whole process! It’s a simple job. No need to make it more expensive, complicated, and intensive.

How did you get the vents to stay in the plexiglass.
@oldcountryhouse
@oldcountryhouse Месяц назад
The vents have small clips on them. So as long as the hole in the plexiglass isn’t too large the vent holds in place.

i though of a similar idea butt my casement window doesnt have a slot for fly screen. could not figure out how to mount it. please help :(

Would some strong tape hold it in place? Or 3 or 4 small nails?
@johnwang9914
@johnwang9914 Месяц назад
Maybe consider magnetic or velcro tape. You just want to attach something with a reasonable seal to the window to close off the window except for the hoses. I'm surprised no one is doing a Saran wrap and duct tape solution. They even make heat shrink film to seal off windows for the winter that you might use.

Does all the heat stay out? Or does outside heat come inside
@oldcountryhouse
@oldcountryhouse 2 месяца назад
The plexiglass has almost no insulating value (R0). Most heat will around the edge though, so good tape will help.

That wouldn’t hold in a storm though
@oldcountryhouse
@oldcountryhouse 2 месяца назад
Correct. Generally the temperature drops during our storms, so we can close the windows and turn off the AC.
