Pro Tip: Make sure your auto parts store has the calipers in stock before doing this job. Most stores don't have them stocked and you would be down a day at least if the caliper needs replaced.
This is true but what you want to do even before ordering your pads is check which kind of piston you have. If you have a phenolic caliper piston in the rear you need to order specific pads for it. Phenolic is a type of resin plastic...you cannot use the typical pads for steel caliper pistons. The phenolic pistons are much thicker so the circular opening in the piston is smaller. Not sure if it was an option or what but a lot of these cars have them, especially the ones that were used for police cruisers or taxis because of better durability. looks like he had a steel one in the video. I have an 02 town car and it had the phenolic rears.
Very nice ride Hector, I have a 2002 Grand Marquis, This was great help aswell as your older videos because i will be doing all that to my 02 soon. Just waiting on parts.
John Stuart Thank you for your comment I'm glade that the video helped, there's a one or two mistakes that was pointed out to me on the video but not bat for a beginner.
Need to remember many of the watchers are novice ...try explaining the operation as you go..example using the clamp.. WHY? You haven’t mentioned a piston at all at that point. I would start out explaining what is there and basic operation before starting...better chance the job will get done right having a basic idea how it works...also one more safety point out.. make sure the car brakes are pumped up,wheels straight and ready to use before removing chocks...because the full compressing of the brake cylinder will have excessive slack when the first driver gets in the car to drive....I forgot it happened to me and end result was backing into the side of my Cadillac with my wife’s car before I could get full brakes...not a good situation l can tell you..just a few thoughts...thanks..
Thank you George Dubbs for your comment, just so the you know that is my first time I've ever done brakes. I did this video so that people can see that if I can do it they can do it. I'm just like them a novice, but I also learn from people like your self that leave comments. Again thank you.
I had this type of work done on my 2003 Lincoln Town Car at the local Ford Dealership yesterday, pads and brake flush, too. Now, my brakes don't go to the floor board when I try to stop! Good idea to get new brakes, for sure.
I just bought a Town Car for real cheap and it needs brakes and rotors. Looked at estimates of 500-700, which is half the price I paid for the whole car. Looked up your video and now I feel confident I can do it myself. Did you have difficulty separating the rotors from the car, or was it literally as easy as you showed in video? I've done rotors before and they are very difficult to break loose. Thanks!
Thank you for your comment As far the rotors go the old one of course just hit the rotors with a hammer on both sides till they come loose. And please let know how it went.
Hector how did that rotor pull right off? Due to the parking brake I cannot get the rear rotors off. My haines manual also tells me nothing as to how I can loosen the parking brake to make it easier to get these rotors off. Any advise?
412 PSE Kustomz, LLC Did you release your parking brake, make sure you have chocks on the front of your tires to keep your car from rolling. The rotor should come right off.
Hector Espinoza Yes the beake has been released. The rotors will not come off. I even loosed the parking brake adjuster via the slot in the rear that the rubber plug covers. Still no luck. Do I beat it off with a hammer
Most people don't use the parking brakes much, so it should come off easy. If the parking brakes have worn a groove in the inside of the rotor it can be a challenge, just like the old fashion rear drum brakes.
Hi Mark I think that the inner shoe brakes are only used as a parking brake, and parking brakes don't really wear out. One thing about Lincoln Town cars is once you put it in drive it automatically releases the parking brake, so you don't drive with them on. I hope that answers your question. Thank you for your comment
Amazing how many critical steps were omitted. I did the ass end on my 94 TC 10 years ago, so I needed a refresher, or so I thought, doing mine this weekend: the right way, not like this!
I did mine pads and rotors but they squeak horribly I’ve been through them twice and I have no idea what it could be. Ive greased all contact points. The only thing I can think of is the pads got too hot or something. If you know something I don’t please let me know.
