How to Install Shutters on a Brick House

I installed exterior vinyl shutters on my brick house (for the first time) - and learned a lot along the way. So, I made this video in hopes to share some of my new found knowledge with you. Hope you enjoy it!

Hammer Drill
Masonry Bits (1/4")
Regular Bits (3/8")
Step Latter
Measuring Tape
Pencil
Pen
Rubber Mallet
Raised Panel Vinyl Shutters of various sizes
Rag
Ball Pump
Saw Horses
Ply Wood (for make shift work bench)
Plastic Fasteners
Helper (Mitch)
Coffee
Water

Very well done video with lots of information. Appreciate the tip about the good drill and bit. Three years ago, we installed new vinyl shutters into our brick house with vinyl spike screws that came with the shutters. After three years, we had one shutter come down and the vinyl spike screws were actually broken in half. We didn't use anchors so that may have been a problem too. Last week, another shutter came down. Anyway, we are going to use metal screws and anchors for any new shutters that come down.

I'm changing the shutters and noticed all holes are drilled in the mortar, not the bricks. Good thing I saw this video to do it properly now. btw, the metal screws require no anchors if they're labeled as masonry screws.

whez08 It’s easier to repair mortar then it is brick if you drill into it. (Incase you want to remove the shutters in the future). That’s why I would always recommend drilling into the mortar and using an anchor

Thanks so much for this. Yesterday's attempt was a fail. I tried using an electric drill and was gonna use the metal screws lol. I'm gonna have to buy a hammer drill and try it again later

Drill mortar, not brick! It’s easier to drill into, and easier to repair mortar then it is brick if you drill into it. (Incase you want to remove the shutters in the future). That’s why I would always recommend drilling into the mortar and using an anchor.

Always, you can easily replace and patch the mortar...your just destroying your brick and he's using the wrong tools... This man doesn't use tools for a living...he cave maned the crap out of this job.

Great video! Thanks for sharing your experience. We're about to replace our shutters and we have a brick face too. You mentioned that you should not drill into the mortar. I've heard that you should drill into the mortar and not the brick. How did you decide to drill into the brick?

Thanks and good question. I chose to go into the brick because the mortar is 68 years old (my home was built in 1950). In my experience, aged mortar will crumble and crack, whereas old brick won't.

Mine aren't installed qith screws through them, they mount to some sort of frame under them.

the mortar is more brittle, and harder to get a clean hole in - especially considering my house was built in 1955 (mortar over 60 years old)

I think the fake shutter look is going out of style, and it is about time. I found this video because I want to patch the holes left when I remove my vinyl fake shutters.
