What size cable should be used for the override switch/button?
@neileveritt7132
@neileveritt7132 3 года назад
Don't mean to be picky but from my understanding of your documentation the min. recommended cable size (4 or 6 B&S) is determined by the length of run 3m not the voltage 12 v or 24 v. correct me if I am wrong but that's how I understand the instruction .
@REDARCElectronics
@REDARCElectronics 3 года назад
Hi Neil, Thank you for watching, and we apologise for any confusion caused. The cable size is determined by power - this means it is determined by the amount of current flowing through a circuit of a certain length. Hi, a few months ago i installed this unit into my old hilux to run my fridge off my 120ah auxiliary battery. It worked great for a few weeks but gradually my car was getting harder and harder to start. Its at the point now that sometimes i cannot start my car unless i turn off my fridge. I am unsure of what the issue is because the isolator seems to charge the batteries fine. Any help would be appreciated.

Near the start of the video you show how to wire up a winch using a relay and the SBI blue wire...if I want to wire up the Option #3 (the jump start assist), can I do that by tapping off of the blue wire relay connection? Also Option #3 does not show the inclusion of a LED indicator lamp, can the LED lamp be added to the Option #3 wiring diagram?

Thanks for watching! If you wanted to integrate the start assist feature you can, you will just need to wire the SBI12 as per the middle diagram on page 4 of the user manual. When wired this way you will want to T off between the momentary button and the resistor. This cable will connect to pin 87 on the winch relay.

I have watched your You Tube clip above and wish to implement the "Start Feature with Override Button" - I wish also to have the remote LED display indicating the unit is "working". My issue is the fact that the 'D' unit works in both directing - can I display this fact with one or maybe two LEDs? If so, could you please provide me the circuit?
@REDARCElectronics
@REDARCElectronics 2 года назад
Hi Ron, thank you for your message. The LED indicator for the SBI12/SBI12D simply illuminates when the isolator is active - the Dual Sensing feature of the SBI12D measures both main terminal voltages and will activate when either reaches 13.2V, and illuminates the LED at the same time. There is no ability to display the differentiation between which source activated the isolator, simply if it is active or not. Option 2 on page 3 of the user manual provides the wiring diagram that includes the Push Button for Start Assist as well as the External LED. If you require further assistance our Tech Team can assist in greater detail over the phone on 1300 REDARC.

My auxiliary battery set up in the rear of my wagon plan on running the earth wire back to the main battery or should I just earth it rear seats bolt as I’ve removed the seats?
@REDARCElectronics
@REDARCElectronics 3 года назад
Hi Luk, Either option is acceptable, provided the seat mount is indeed a common ground in the vehicle. If you are running the cable back to the battery however, ensure that you connect this to a common negative point and not directly to the battery negative terminal. Some vehicles monitor the battery through a sensor or shunt on the negative terminal, and bypassing this would result in start battery charging issues. Any further questions please don't hesitate to contact our helpful Tech Support Team in our head office who can run through this in greater detail over the phone.

What does it indicate when the red light doesn't go off
@REDARCElectronics
@REDARCElectronics 2 года назад
Hi Glen, When the SBI12’s red LED is illuminated this indicates the SBI12 is ON (closed contacts). The SBI12 will Turn ON when the voltage of your starting battery rises above 13.2 volts and remain ON until the voltage of your starting battery drops below 12.7 volts. The voltage of your starting battery may remain above 12.7 volts for a period of time after the vehicle is switched OFF and therefore the red LED will remain ON.

@REDARCElectronics
@REDARCElectronics 2 года назад
Hi there Luke, thanks for your comment. Depending on the vehicle, most will be fine to install a second battery to using an SBI. It will only throughput what the alternator can provide, so won’t overload the system too much. Most Auxiliary batteries of the lead-acid based variety can only take a certain amount of charge current anyway, so this will work well.

How long would it take to charge a flat 100ah battery?
@REDARCElectronics
@REDARCElectronics Год назад
Hi Scott, thanks for your comment. It will mainly depend on how much spare capacity the alternator has to give and the condition of the battery as to how long it will take to completely fill. If you’re looking to charge the battery from what we would consider ‘flat’ at 12V, for an alternator able to provide a spare 20A to the battery it might take approximately 2 or so hours of constant driving and a stable high voltage. There are quite a few variables, so can be tricky to properly work out too! If you want to have a chat to us about it, I’d recommend to ring our Tech Support team on 1300REDARC for further assistance.

The SBI12 is used to prevent the auxiliary battery, or any loads on the auxiliary side of the isolator from draining the vehicle battery. If you do not use the SBI12, there is the potential that you can end up with a flat cranking battery and not being able to start your vehicle. Any further questions please contact our head office.

@REDARCElectronics
@REDARCElectronics 2 года назад
Hi Jack, The two smaller studs and nuts located below the module are the connection to the isolators coil. The smart module controls the isolator by applying power to the coil. You will not need to connect any wiring to these smaller studs/nuts when installing a smart battery isolator.

@REDARCElectronics
@REDARCElectronics 3 года назад
Hi 1972butchy, the BLUE override can be used to link the main and auxiliary terminals of the SBI at any time. If you are wanting to use the SBI to allow winching from both batteries, it would be worth upgrading from the standard SBI12 to the SBI212 as it has a higher continuous current rating. Do you still need a BCDC charger when using a EFB battery?
@REDARCElectronics

Hi there, thanks for your question. It will depend on the vehicle you are installing the unit into and what type of Alternator that it has. If it is a vehicle with a Smart Alternator, then yes a BCDC is a good option here. But if the vehicle has a standard, Fixed Voltage type alternator, then using an SBI will be fine here.

Hi Mate, I'm wanting to run a second battery in the engine bay for a winch, but also another battery in my canopy to power a fridge and also some 12V outlets. What do you suggest I use? Engine bay will be AGM, canopy battery will potentially be Lithium. I have a 2021 SR5 hilux. Or is the canopy battery overkill for just a fridge, LED canopy lights and a few 12V outlets? I do plan on having solar input as well. I'm just unsure as to what is needed. The Hilux is only used for weekend 4X4 trips. Thanks heaps
@REDARCElectronics
@REDARCElectronics 2 года назад
The Lithium battery in the will be good - you will get the most useable power out of this setup for your fridge and relevant devices. We would recommend to use an SBI12 for the under-bonnet AGM battery and a BCDC1225D for the Lithium in the rear. That way, you are taking care of both, but not overloading the alternator of the HiLux either.

can i use 12 volt agm batteries with this, i have a ford flex, and i want to put my solar battery generator box in the storage area
@REDARCElectronics
@REDARCElectronics 3 года назад
The suitability of this product will depend on a variety of factors, namely the type of alternator your vehicle uses and what current your solar generator box is rated to. For some vehicles a DC-DC Charger such as a REDARC BCDC In-Vehicle Battery Charger may be required to properly charge an auxiliary battery, with the output current of the charger selected to suit your application.

The standard SBI12 will only "turn on" when the starter battery terminal detects voltage above 13.2v. The SBI12D (dual sensing) will monitor voltages on both starter battery and aux battery terminals. If either detects voltage above 13.2 the SBI will "turn on" and link the two together. @Redarcelectronics I have a Redarc BCDC1225D and the SBI12KIT (12v not 24v) for a dual AGM battery set up, in the engine compartment. I'm attempting to equip both the 'Jump Start' feature AND the 'Ultimate Dual Battery for Winching' feature, which the SBI12 enables. Questions: 1) For jump start feature of the sbi12, what is the minimum size momentary switch (amp rating) and minimum fuse size (amp rating) needed for that switch? 2) Also, can the same switch be wired to the SBI12 to accommodate both the jump start feature and the ultimate winching feature (i.e. in this scenario I'd replace the momentary switch with a latch or rocker style switch to accommodate both jump start (when truck starter battery dead) or to connect both batteries (while truck on) during winching)? 3) Or, are 2 seperate switches needed and if so, what size switch (amp rating) and fuse size (amp rating) is needed on switch connected to 'Ultimate Dual Battery for Winching' set up wiring? 4) Lastly, what minimum amp rating does relay need to be, for 'Ultimate Dual Battery for Winching' side wiring? Much appreciated.
@REDARCElectronics
@REDARCElectronics 3 года назад
Hi Jes, The switching is only purely a signal to the unit to activate, so something around 1A-2A at the most is more than enough. You can use the same switch for both; you could use a rocker switch instead but just need to remember to turn it off when not needing the jumpstart or when not winching. For a bigger vehicle and heavy winch load, an SBI212 is a good choice (200A model). If it is a small winch and 4 cyl engine, then a standard SBI12 is fine here (100A model). If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to contact our Tech Support Team in our head office.

@REDARCElectronics
@REDARCElectronics 4 года назад
Hello, thank you for the reply. When using an SBI12 we recommend that the auxiliary battery is the same chemistry as the factory starting battery (normally Lead-Acid). The reason for this is the auxiliary battery is being charged only by the alternator. The alternator is only designed to charge a Lead-Acid based battery. If you do want to use the auxiliary battery to jump start, the battery MUST have a CCA rating (Cold Cranking Amps). We would recommend the auxiliary battery have a CCA rating the same (or higher) as the factory starting battery. This will be written on the factory battery.
