Kylie Hetherington sorry for the late response I appreciate the kind words that's why I built my shop to help others and to do simple instructional videos just trying to keep things simple and down-to-earth thanks so much for watching
@@davidc7889 that's awesome you found the problem. them kits are super easy to install. the only thing most people mess up is getting a good ground on the trailer
A good hack for running the wires down the tongue. Just run a tape measure down the tube and out the other side then lock it, go to the other and and tape your wires to the end of it, then go back, unlock it and pull the wires back through. Works every time and everyone has a tape measure.
Great video, I just brought myself a light kit and soon I will put my trailer lights together after watching your video, thank you for sharing, so, now I have the courage to fix my trailer myself.
Nice video thanks - one thing I just never have confidence in is electrical but these seems like a very straight forward task. Been putting off getting new lights/wiring on the trailer long enough, not anymore.
Ron Steurer electrical systems can be tricky at times but something as trailer wiring it like you said it's very straightforward it's so easy definitely give it a good to gun ho try just don't forget to take the white wire and ground it good to the trailer that's where a lot of people have problems wood lights not functioning because of a bad trailer ground thank you so much for watching
Do not own a soldering iron/gun. So I use mash-connectors and shrink tubing for these projects. Use what you have and know how to use. Great video. Thanks.
I would add that the ground for the lights is the mounting screw nuts. Make sure the metal is clean and bare and the bracket is between the light and the trailer, not under the nuts that make the ground.
Guys it’s 4:37 am and boyfriend driving me nuts on wiring... I’m a nerd, I do technical stuff... Googled RU-vid, you boys came up! Thanks maybe I can relax my mind now!!! Now he gotta make a video... lol thanks
Somebody probably already mentioned this, but the only error I saw, was you installed the license plate holder backwards. The clear plastic window on the left tail light is to illuminate your license plate at night. The plate holder, needs to be installed in reverse (to how you did it), so the license plate is under the clear plastic window. Other than that, Good Job.
After making the video I turned around and fix that issue trying to film and stay on try sometimes you get lost and you make me a simple mistakes thank you so much for watching
It is so easy that I installed a new water proof set of LED’s on my boat trailer today and they worked the first try. LOL 😆 It is my 1st set and I think I may add a set of yellow side lights later this week because I can.
You don't like the wire nuts on account they are not water tight. But a trick I learned years ago while wiring outside stuff with wire nuts is to squirt just a dab of 100% silicone into the nut & then put my wires together twisting them into the nut snug n tight & presto they are now water tight.
excellent vid bud. very informative. thanks as i'm about to rewire my 20 yr old 5x8 utility trailer that i've been limping along for many yrs replacing this then that.
Thank for for explaining "HOW" to do the proper connections. When searching for "How to", wiring diagrams shows "where", to run wires, NOT "How". I know its simple but still when yo google "How" you get a bunch of diagrams that show where to "run" the wires but not actually "How" to hook up tail, and plate lights. Showing how to include Running lights would make this complete
Do you know anything about replacing a 7 pole plug?. Im learning how hard it would be compared to replacing all the wiring and just wiring the way you did. Still thinking
Yes which isn't even needed. No brakes on my trailer. So rewiring or.. ! Maybe I can attach a 4 pole.. again: homework time for me. Thanks again for the video
@@ifferl8781 I get it there are adapters that go from what you have down to the standard trailer plug I can't remember the exact name but I know U-Haul sells them Walmart Amazon and a lot of other stores would have them I'm thinking that's what you need
If a tow vehicle has seperate turn signals, i put the extra lights on to accomodate. I very much dislike using the electronic adaptors because its just another thing to fail. The seperate turn signal system is also a superior design, so why not use it? I also always go for interior trailer connectors. I also keep the trailer end in an enclosed box when not in use. Theres nothing like clean connectors to maintain reliablity.
I agree as far as on the electrical connectors they're honestly nothing but junk made for someone too lazy to find an alternative way of hooking up the wires thanks for watching
I'm just watching a bunch of videos on rewiring trailers to get the courage to do it myself on my 40 year old horse trailer. The lights don't seem too bad but I'm concerned about the breaks.
Tilt Trailers must be grounded on the bed not the tongue! if you ground on the tongue your going through the hinges and the lights will cut out when you drive, if you ground through the bed where the lights are bolted to, your good.
The only light that work on my boat trailer is the driver side only. Driver sides of the trailer and the driver side rear light, but my passenger side on the trailer and rear passenger light does not work. I replaced the ground wire on the passenger side which I did not hear you mention about a ground wire and I replaced the rear passenger bulb and it still did not work. Can you please give me some information on this? Thank you and what a great video!
azhaynes two wire rims side marker lights you would tap into the wire that feeds the turn signals and the running lights that way when you make a turn the lights will Flash and when you have running lights on it would activate the side marker lights. Hope that helps thanks for watching
love your video. i tried installing lights per your video. one problem is that i dont have a green wire on passenger side. i have green and red. Does it matter? and does each light have to be grounded? Thanks
LOL I might have been stole the license plate bracket backwards but it's funny because I just remove them later on I never really run tags on any of my trailers
So I wire my 10 foot trailer exactly like this. Left blinker and right blinker and stop lights work. Running lights do not work why? How do I troubleshoot it the wire harness is brand new and the lights were ordered from Amazon LED.
I'll be honest when it comes to wiring sometimes I have to be there and see it wiring can be tricky but just in case check the vehicle make sure that you're getting out put out of the plug
To be honest at all really depends on the kit that you get most are fairly simple but always refer to the instructions or wiring diagram to get with your kit
Those leaf springs could haul a space shuttle... If you had access to a welder, maybe you could relocate those tail light brackets. I don't know why anyone would build a trailer with lights on the corner like that. It's begging them to be smashed to pieces.
You would just tapping into the wire that controls the running lights so when you turn your running lights on at night it would just illuminate the side markers
It's really up to the state laws or up to you when I built my 16 ft toy hauler I put two marker lights on each side because of the length I hope that helps thank you so much for watching
massis32210 Thanks for the response. But I can't figure out what they clip onto. I'm going to use them for my ground but they don't seem to fit any of the other hardware.
Nick Lozowy I didn't explain the inside of the properly, there are two channels inside of it. One runs all the way through, and one just goes half way through. you slip the wire that you want to tap power from in the long grove and the other wire goes in the short slot. in the middle of it is a metal blade like thing that you would squeeze down with a set of pliers and then it would Pierce both wires just insulation enough to send power from one wire to the other one without having to actually physically cut both of them. I have used them in the past but I personally don't like them I've had them cut wires completely in half and if you do use one I would recommend putting the heat shrink on before using it a large enough one that you could heat shrink the whole thing to keep it waterproof
The white wire which is ground that comes off the harness normally what I'll do is drill a very tiny hole and use a self-tapping screw with an eyelid on the wire and ground it right straight to the trailer.
Don't forget that the metal bolts on the back of the lights have to make good electrical contact with the metal on the trailer. That completes the electrical connection via a ground. So, if the trailer is rusted at the point where those metal bolts connect to the trailer, you may want to remove the rust first. Also, if the holes that the bolts go through are too big, there may be no electrical connection. That was the case on my trailer, and I ended up fashioning an aluminum bracket with smaller holes to the back of the lights, and then grounded the bracket itself to the trailer by drilling a smaller hole through both the bracket and the trailer and fastening with a third bolt.
The wiring harness should be 16 ft if I remember right if you have a trailer longer the 16ft you can buy four strand trailer wiring to extend the wiring harness
Sorry for the late response if it came with two ground wires they should run back to the light and ground down to the post that would secure the light to the trailer but try grounding the trailer out first that might work if you have any questions just respond
The yellow lights you'll tap in into the wire that runs the running lights. They give you these little blue push connectors don't use them their garbage. Tapping to the wires that run the running lights shrimp and solder the wires and use a waterproof connection. I've only used them on one of my trailers I was super long. If you have any other questions just hit me up thanks for watching...
i installed the exact same lights on my trailer yesterday and there not working,,, i have power at the plug,,, when i poked the wire to ck power at the light it didnt have any,,, but when i poked it and touched the trailer the lights came on,,,, so maybe a ground issue?
I am sure you have figured it out by now, but some of the lights have to ground at the mounting bolts, so you have to clean the metal so the nut or bolt makes a good connection.
I have a problem with my trailer light I connected them and they turn on but when I put my turning signal on they both blink and when I push the brakes they turn off instead of getting brighter what could be the problem?
marcos garcia I would start by checking the vehicle wiring harness for the lights. if that checks out I would check the wires on the trailer to see if you have any cuts in the wire. is this a new to you trailer? and do you have another trailer to test your truck wiring?
marcos garcia start out by checking the ground on the trailer itself . then I would start out by checking the vehicle wiring it's going to turn out to be one or the 2 but I'm starting to suspect that it could be the vehicle wiring. get another trailer of somebody else's and try it . the last resort that I would recommend is possibly going to a U-Haul dealer and having their mechanics check out the wiring or any significant shop
I know what you mean pretty much the same thing I did when I hooked up my lighting in my house, I would turn on the lights my water faucets came on & when I turned off the faucet's the lights came on & vise verse. L.O.L I'm just kidding! You gotta have some humor.
7:24 7:29 7:34 7:40 7:45 8:01 8:06 I wouldn’t do that in the grass in case I lose a nut or bolt and if I mow the grass and get a flat tire it would be my fault that I was working on putting new trailer taillights on
That's probably a good idea not to do it in the grass but in my situation is about the only spot I had at the moment to do it thank you so much for watching
I bought the same kit and installed it and all of the lights work turn signals everything but when I press the brakes only the driver side doesn’t turn on, What do you think that could be from
I appreciate the comment but in my case always start in the back because I want the extra wire up front I can always tie up the extra because my trailers used on different vehicles that need different length wires thanks for watching
He should have cleaned the paint and corrosion off the trailer's tail light mounting plate before putting on the new lights. He'd have a BETTER ground connection.
The hole that the tail lights actually went through it there was no galvanized coating or paint on the inside made a great ground but it was would have been hard to see in the video
On this trailer I didn't feel the need to use the yellow lights on such a short trailer if you look up my toy hauler build on that 16-foot trailer I put two of them on each side thanks for watching
