Installing New Rub Rail on your boat building or boat restoration project can be a challenging job. This episode I talk about the construction of my hull deck joint on my Albin 27 pilothouse trawler. I install new rubber rub rail repairing the outer hull flange.
Welcome to my boat building channel! This is my trawler restoration of an Albin 27 pocket trawler. Every couple of weeks I post a boat building or boat repair video to document various boat projects, sailboat restorations, or boat repairs.

I agree any lube material would make attachment more difficult and strenuous. As an alternative, I think the wood wedge approach could work better but you'd need an assistant to work a long wedge to pry the rail opening just ahead of you wrestling the rail on the to boat. I guess the Werkers are taking vacation.

I was thinking of something almost shoe-horn hammer like with a handle that might have allowed the material pried open as you scooted it along the hull flange and insert 👍

If you haven’t started yet- I think something made from stainless or aluminum would look great over those corners at the stern

Thanks for the comment. 👍😁Check out the episode where I build corner calls out of fiberglass. It came out amazing 🤩

I have never done this job, but I would be tempted to hook up a come-along to each of those aft ends and give them a good tug while going at them with a heat gun. Then I'd anchor the ends with a couple of rivets with washers that would hide under your new corner trim pieces. Won't that PVC creep around when the weather gets hot unless it's pre-loaded? Just two cents worth from the peanut gallery. :-). I really appreciate that you share the struggle and don't just fast-forward over the frustrating parts. This sure looks like a lot of my projects. Just one little line on the to-do list...

Thank you Marty. I do not anticipate much linear shrinkage. Plenty of room for movement. The corner end caps will likely me attached with marine sealant

What about a hot water heater tank with the rub rail in it. As you move along it comes out of hot water and keeps the other end in hot water. And also keeping the hot water hot . Maybe have it on a trolley as you move around the boat ?

This is a good idea. I actually thought that if you had a hot tub running at about 102-104 degrees you could warm the entire coil quite a bit -pull it out and then attempt a quick install.

Coming to this late, but I've heard feeding the rubber along the rail, starting at one aft corner, and either pulling or sliding along. No idea if thats effective, though. I'm about to embark on this same project for my Albin 27 FC, same year, so this is invaluable. Thank you!

Looks good. I would have used a lot of WD 40. This would not have opened up the rail but once it was open it may have moved a bit quicker. Go Motor ciry boat works.

Right the issue was opening it up. Any lube would have made it hard to hold onto.

Maybe some diluted dawn would have helped.

I thought 🤔about that but the issue was the rub rail not opening up. Any lubricant would have just made it tough to hold onto
