1. Focus on your class notes. 2. Do your homework properly. 3. Get a book other than textbook, to do different problems. 4. Review the topics and problems that have been given by the teacher. 5. Do problems every day... Keep practising. Don't give up. You are not alone who is struggling with maths.

I would add that if you look ahead to courses you will be taking, then over the breaks between semesters find a cheap used textbook for that subject/s and start working with the material. I'm taking Trig this spring semester. I used my 5 week winter break to get a textbook and I've taught myself nearly a third of the course material. I did this with College Algebra and got a high A in the class. It works, but it takes some dedication.

My experience studying Electrical Engineering degree at university. The first two(2) years, every semester compulsory to study Math (e.g. algebra, calculus, matrix vector analysis, laplace transform), Physics (including advance physics Quantum, Optics and Thermodynamics), Computer Science (internet engineering; programming languages Pascal, C, C++, Java, Assembly language and ADA for real time programming) and Electrical Engineering (e.g. electromagnetics, motors, electronics, power systems etc. etc.). Every day I was running from one building to another building (in the university campus) to attend lectures, tutorials, laboratories, then in my free time attending private math tutorials (the university used to offer free math tutorials) until they close. Every day leaving home at 7am and returning home at 9pm or 10pm. I used to get mentally exhausted, so to help with this, I used to go to run at the park in the night from 10pm to 11pm. I remember one day; I returned home at 12pm so I run from 12pm midnight to 1am early morning. The student life is not easy. Wishing you good luck in your studies and success.

@@fireheart239 When I 14 years old, I felt in love with Electrical Engineering after opening an electrical engineering book, so my goal was to be an Electrical Engineer. After finishing high school, I went to a technical college and my goal was to get the Associate Diploma in Electrical Engineering which I achieved it. Then I went to university and my goal was to get the Bachelor of Electrical Engineering which I got it. After graduated from university my goal was to get an electrical engineering position in an engineering company, I achieved it (it was not easy, I looked for electrical engineering job for more than two years). Working as Junior Electrical Engineer my goal was to learn to design electrical system etc. I successfully designed electrical systems for hospital, multistorey buildings, shopping centers and public carparks. Then I joined a consulting engineering company, and my goals were getting more experience and successfully to design electrical systems for rail electrification system networks (for the electric train), multistorey buildings, bridges etc. I successfully designed power systems, solved engineering issues and have the experience. Now, my goal is to work for a power utility company (the company that provide electric power to houses, buildings, factories, etc.) and work in renewable energy (wind power and solar energy), this is the future of power generation. Great advice. I remember my Calc 2 instructor handed out a syllabus on the first day that had all of the homework problem assignments. We had homework after each class and I think 3 or 4 1 hour lectures per week in one semester. I never got real far ahead but I liked doing problems so sometimes I would work ahead for my own amusement. I was fortunate and thankful to this day with the quality of those early college math instructors that I had. It means so much to have a good instructor.

Dear Math Sorcerer, I would like to thank you the amount of time and effort you put into your videos. I used to be terrible at mathematics, it was my worst subject all throughout my 12 years of school, I was almost straight-A from everything, except for math. I had a lot of bad teachers, so I didn't get the basics right, I had to go to a math tutor, who was probably the worst teacher I've ever met. Long story short, at the age of 21 I became interested in mathematics, despite what people say around me. I'm learning from pre-algebra and my goal is to learn advanced mathematics, and get a BSc and even a Masters, just because of the pure joy (and to disprove people, too, haha).

@@kapoioBCS True, only a select few can take real time notes in a class environment, I think they all use quite advanced setups with lots of macros and they also add drawings in pretty much real time from Inkscape using some script macros. Honestly, I think it's better if you just rewrite handwritten notes; not only do you learn a useful tool, you have to think and rethink about the topic on a deeper level while doing so. I like to add more context to my notes and that forces me to understand the topic better. I've also been using ChatGPT, with caution ofc, since it can often be wrong about something. I ask it about standard math notations and best practices, have it explain parts of a paper I may not understand etc. All those combined lead to having some pretty nice notes I can go back to when implementing something in code. Currently I'm taking detailed notes on the problems I encounter when implementing a ropes data structure and how I solve them.

Looking for alternative approaches helped me a lot when I was struggling with "crux points" in calc I/II/III, at least for building more solid intuition and fluency through problems. The drawback of this is that you'll have to put the things together and follow your teacher style anyway, but it will provide valuable flexibility and knowledge for beyond the course you're taking.

@IdontKnow-gm7eu Год назад
Eh, I mean I get your point, and it's solid advice. However, certain teachers will give you a review and then you get to the exam and the problems are totally different than the review. Happened to me last semester after I had studied and done a lot of practice problems before the exam. She definitely changed her methodology, and it was much more difficult than her practice problems.

I can understand basic maths theory, but when it comes to basic maths problems and applying the theory to work out the solution I simply don't know how to do it. When I was in high school, I was somewhat astounded how people in my maths class managed to somehow "figure out" the solution to a maths problem and I somehow could not figure out how or WHY they got that correct answer. I couldn't see how they knew that it was this particular formula or this particular method that they had to use in order to figure out the correct answer, or how they knew, using that formula or method, that it was in fact the correct answer. It's much more difficult for me in applying my basic knowledge in mathematics than actually learning it (or perhaps I did not learn it correctly at all - I did have some shocking teachers, some of whom did not even know the answers or step-by-step solutions to the problem questions they issued us in class). I would appreciate it, The Math Sorcerer, if you could perhaps direct me to a video on how to resolve this problem of mine or, if there is none, make a video for this? I've recently become somewhat interested in maths (shocking, considering I had no interest nor talent in it in high school), but my present knowledge is quite literally poor (even worse than a 5th grade student, I'd say!). In fact, I might have some 'maths trauma'. However, on the bright(?) side, I think I am not the only one with this problem!
@mskiptr
@mskiptr Год назад
At least when it comes to high school (or earlier) problems, it basically boils down to noticing a parallel (equivalence) between the problem as described and some particular mathematical construct. Or in other words, seeing how the problem at hand can be modeled using more abstract tools you know.

Math has always been a subject that I sort of liked. You see, I was an extremely lazy kid. Middle school level math was a breeze, I didn’t need to work hard at all. Up until grade 10, I didn’t need to work. At some point, I just didn’t want to put in the time anymore. I didn’t have the patience to sit down and solve problems. Much of the effort in Math for me was sitting and solving problems, especially problems where I didn’t see an immediate benefit. I thought, Software engineering is different. I grew up and realized I loved to craft software: I see an immediate problem and I work towards the solution. The feedback loop is short and anything I work on has an immediate benefit, that I can see. Now, as I work on harder problems in software, I see the immediate benefit to math. Hence, I have the drive to solve problems and dive deeper. Math is a lot like programming: as Galileo said, math is the language in which God has written the universe. It is a language, governed by its own rules. Now, I can’t help but bask in the joy of solving math problems. If you miss a concept, moving on doesn’t make sense because the deeper you go the deeper the layer becomes and math builds on itself. I was like a baby starting over again but, with patience and practice, math became fun. Things tend to be fun when you take the time to understand how it works. To those out there doubting themselves, you’ve got this! Have fun! Go deep! Delve into the details and explore the meanings. I promise you, you’ll see the joy in the language of the universe!

To your first point... What about if you're self studying? Should you make your own notes from the textbook? Or should you just understand the explanations then attempt the questions? I ask because it takes me a while to write notes, and sometimes I focus on that too much, to the detriment of actually attempting the problems....

They don't have motivation to do math because they can not come logically how the things they learn will directly benefit them. The reason for struggling in math is not understanding why we have chosen to walk in this direction even if the choice is genuinely ours and not a result of pier pressure.
