About Me:
Personal Experience:
I grew up in an addicted family. In fact, it would be way easier for me to tell you who wasn't addicted versus who was addicted. Seriously, I have absolutely no memories of my grandmother without a glass of vodka in her hand. My mother died due to her addiction to methamphetamines. I've had countless addicted step-parents, and my older sister has struggled with serious (life-destroying) addiction for as long as I can remember.
All that being said, I always felt I had a great and loving family. My sister and I spent every summer swimming in my grandmother's pool. (the grandmother who struggled with alcoholism). We called her Mimi, and she was great. My mom was attractive and very creative, not to mention lots of fun!
Growing up like this gives me a unique perspective on addiction. I can know that someone is struggling with addiction but still see their wonderful qualities.
Professional qualifications:
After graduating from counselor school in 2004, I worked in a private psychiatric hospital for 10 years. This facility provided acute care (short term) for serious mental health and Substance Use Disorders. I learned a LOT from my experience working in a psychiatric hospital.
I got to see and treat almost every type of mental health and addiction issue you can think of, but it felt like a revolving door. I'd see the same people come in over and over and their families were absolutely desperate for help.
Unfortunately, the system isn't set up to help families in general. Knowing what it's like to live with addiction, I was all the more frustrated.
All this led to me deciding to leave the hospital and start my own addiction treatment center, specializing in addicted family systems.
Over the years, I had developed lots of good relationships with other clinicians, and I knew who was the best! I put together a superstar team, and we now run out own outpatient addiction treatment practice called Hope For Families Recovery Center.
We've worked very hard not to tie ourselves to the "big system." We don't work for the insurance companies. We don't work for a hospital system, We don't answer to anyone except our clients, their families, and the licensing boards that provide us with our professional license. We have all Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC)-(which is mental health counselors) and also Licensed Addiction Counselors (LAC).
We don't provide inpatient treatment, but we do partner with a phenomenal sober living facility called Greenville Transitions. They offer top-notch sober living care for young men in the early stages of recovery. www.greenville...

This is fabulous video. I didn’t know it was called invisible intervention- but I accidentally did this and it worked. Took five months. During that five months - one detox - started drinking again a week later - then a month later nearly died and into ICU - drinking a month later and then three eeeks after that - a very carefully selected rehab that I’d researched months earlier. This guy is holding some good cards - he was sober for 11 years before relapse. But addiction is addiction and it has returned with a vengeance. I never criticized during those five months - I constantly told him I admired his struggle - I told him I was dirty he was going through this - I made sure it was never about me. That last week before rehab, I was ready. Here’s the door. The way out of this is over here. It’s right here if you want it. And he did want it. He almost ran to it. He’s three weeks into tehab. Pink cloud has passed. Very realistic. Preparing hard for post rehab. He’s cautiously optimistic - not thinking this is conquered - knows it’s a daily commitment. But it did take five months. And he could have died at any time. But I accepted that - stayed mostly quiet - and was there. It can be done

Wow! You made some very good decisions on how to respond to a difficult situation. Not sure how you knew to do it this way. Impressive 🤩🤩

So very, very helpful. I'm a parent of an older teen son (weed, party drugs, pills) and mid twenties son (MH, alchohol). I want to start invisible intervention with both. During this process, how do I not enable and protect myself and boundaries? This is more so for 17 year old who refuses to do anything, disrespects me and my home, and is verbally abusive and destroys my property. How do I not allow him to tread on me and affect my mental health without kicking him out in 6 months when he turns 18? Even though he's not capable or equipped to be on his own, as of now, that's my plan because he leaves me no other option. I believe he will really spiral and end up in dangerous situations.

Hi Kristin, I think the Invisible Intervention would be great for you, BUT you should not allow abusive behavior. (no matter what!) You need to feel safe in your own home

You sound like my mom, so loving and caring, always trying to help.. your boys are all grown up now though.. its kind of tough love time.. you can be there for them but it really sounds like they are using and abusing you- you can't allow that disrespect, not just for yourself but it's a bad example of self respect for them too... I love my mom so much but I totally used her love and caring against her so I could enable my addiction.. be completely there for them emotionally.. be their rock.. but if you're buying them food, providing housing, providing a vehicle, giving them bail money.. in my experience that's enabling.. I know it's really hard, let them know you believe in them and your there for them.. but work on yourself and your boundaries, encourage your family to do the same.. it's pretty much impossible to maintain an addiction solo.. educate yourself on the psychology of addiction (your watching this video- good start) so hopefully they will embrace health and sobriety.. and you can be ready to help them.. this is just my experience as an addict enabled by my very loving family.. I'm really sorry about what you're going through, all the best to you and your family ♥️ good luck

While I agree with your model the problem is most of us can't afford to keep someone in treatment that long. Especially when dealing with a dual diagnosis.

There are medical treatments such as opiate receptor blockers, like Vivitrol. Antabuse (which should start at lower doses) to limit alcohol consumption and limit withdrawal. Antabuse disulfiram has saved millions of lives. Don't accept anything less than an FDA approved treatment. Don't lose credibility with unapproved unproven treatments. I've seen a life saved with Antabuse. I know a guy who spent 13 months in rehab and said Vivitrol was a miracle to him. (Note rehab probably took all the money before he got Vivitrol.) The issue with medical treatment is that they can remain or become manipulative and unfair while not consuming. That can be very troublesome, but I've seen life saved. For this reason I am looking to Put the Shovel Down to gain some influence on bad behavior. They can take up another substance too.

HELP, everyone said “tough love, we tried the tough love. It has not worked. Adult son in another state, lost job (due to drugs) lost apartment now homeless and still USING. Since Jan 2022, it’s killing us. I can’t cut him off, I must speak w him and know he is alive. No money ever. I do buy him a dinner, on occasion. Family is united, willing to do anything. During phone calls (he has no phone, only speak when he borrows a phone) we keep calls positive, try build him up, tell him we love him. Can’t find his motivator, won’t drop his walls…… what do we do next?

I’ve cut everything for the last 2 months. And I mean everything! Unfortunately there is no change that I know of. I know she is very uncomfortable but still has her place to live for the time being. Only 1 family member has helped her during this time and has said that she will not be able to do it again and I believe she means it. Can’t do the trust building right now because she won’t talk to me. We are in limbo land right now.

Put The Shovel Down yes, it’s very hard and I don’t think most people understand the emotional roller coaster parents feel during this time. I’m used to being a helper and now I resist the temptation. It could be along downward spiral since she has things she could sell before becoming homeless. I pray she doesn’t have to go that far down before admitting she needs help.

What about phone addiction and revenge sleep procrastination. I know someone that's asked for intervention, nobody takes it seriously.
