Finally!...a video that clearly demonstrates how to measure and mark button and buttonhole placement. I couldn't wrap my head around other tutorials, and I've picked out far too many misaligned buttonholes. Thank you for your awesome videos.
I've said it before and I'll say it again; You really are a talented teacher/communicator. Anyone and everyone who shows needs to see your tutorials they are top shelf.
Hello and welcome back, I hope things are going well for you. I am a grumpy old man who just loves sewing and I really do enjoy (and need) your detailed lessons so I was very happy to get the notification of a new upload. I know the ladies will be the majority of your audience but if you are ever get stuck for ideas could I request that you make a video showing how to make a pattern and how you sew a flat round collar for a mans 'grand dad shirt.' , every video I have found on You Tube seems to be made by Indians who appear to be extremely skilled but difficult to follow. Threading through with an easy thread needle, good tip !
Of course I can, I plan to do some more menswear as I do seem to have a few male followers. Thank you for your support and for the great suggestion. Aneka
What a wonderful start to my weekend. Welcome back Aneka! I made yet another Copen dress yesterday! You are the best communicator in the business. So looking forward to your buttonhole series!
So glad to have you back 😃 I really appreciate you for doing these videos. I’ve avoided buttons and button holes because I didn’t know how to do them. Thank you thank You
😻😻😻. I haven’t watched this video yet, just see you in my feed!! All the hearts!!! Your back, much needed buttonhole instruction/ motivation, you are back, bite sized instruction. So many hearts! This just made my day! Thank you, Anika!
Welcome back, Aneka! I have missed your professional tutorials. You have taught me a number of handy tips with this video. I usually shy away from buttonholes. I only have the old style Bernina 830 sewing machine, so I have never heard of the compensation plates, but what can one expect from a sewing machine that is almost 50 years old and still going strong! It is still functional, though. Despite its age, I still think that it was ahead of its time for the era during which it was manufactured. I wouldn't swap it for the world!
Welcome back!!! I've been sewing buttonholes for years, but this was a great reminder on details that will improve my techniques and give me more professional looking results. I can't wait to move to the next video. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much - especially for the tutorial using the compensation plate. I picked one up from my dealer today and the instructions were not very clear at all. Now, I’ll finally be able to do the buttonholes on my denim waistband!
YYYEEESSS ! Pretty Aneka is back ! I'm very pleased to see you again. Come on everybody ! Welcome back to school 😂😂 ! Great video as usual. Thank you so much. Send you a great sunbeam from Paris.
Wow your machine does have lots of lovely options and really great having the visual display showing exactly what to expect. I always need to do test runs prior to the actual product to check my button holes are how I want them.
I'm looking forward to this series; it sounds so detailed and thorough... we will know everything there is to know about buttonholes by the end of it I'm sure :)
@@abibrooks6251 Thanks so much, that really means a lot. I know that I make long videos which some people don't like but I want to give ALL the info! Probably too much sometimes! 😂
@@MadetoSew No such thing as too much information when it comes to teaching us all how to sew beautiful clothes, you're doing a top notch job, be proud!
Nice to see you back! Great video, detailed, clear, comprihensive. Looking forward to rest of the series. By the way, had a look at your website. Love the designs and the shoots.
Thank you! This is very timely, as I’m planning to make a fully tailored jacket this autumn, with manual buttonholes stitched with silk buttonhole twist.
Thanks very much. I don't show going one on a collar stand, perhaps I can add this. BUT I do suggest tools for tricky places, at the end of this video I show 2 extra feet you can purchase and use to help with buttonholes in difficult places.
This is fantastic information! I’ve been trying to get my head around whether I needed the compensation plate or the leveller. I see that I need both! 😀
Great news, I use them both just for different things. Sorry! But they are good tools and I have had customers use them in classes when they have had trouble with the location of the buttonholes. Aneka x
Such a pleasure to see you again on RU-vid, your videos are always so fantastic and amazingly well explained! I have a question for you regarding the placement of the first top buttonhole: the start of this buttonhole (I mean the edge above) shouldn't be 3 mm above the centre of the button, following the same rule as the horizontal ones? I hope I have I'm being clear enough :-)
squinternet1 thank you so much. If you have a vertical button you could start with the same rule. So position the button first. The top of the button sits 1/4”-3/8” below the top of the garment. So for a vertical button you could start by measuring 3/8” to the top of the button and then 1/2 the width of the button. This is the button position. Then measure the vertical Buttonhole. Button plus 1/8” as standard. Half above and half below the button. IF you feel the top of the vertical Buttonhole is TOO close to the top of the garment then you can drop it slightly more. Does this make sense? Aneka x
Hi Debbie, I haven't used a vintage machine for any of the tutorials but I do show a manual buttonhole. I presume it is manual on these machines? Thanks, Aneka
Although I've been sewing for many years, I still find that sewing Button Holes neatly, on a garment made with heavier fabrics, a real challenge...Any suggestions? Love your videos!
Hi Diana, did you see the part at the end of the video when I talk about the compensation plate 25:47? I use that tool on my Bernina when I have to do buttonholes on thick fabrics. I would also usually do a corded buttonhole as the stitching will look better and won't sink into the fabric as much. The corded buttonhole videos will launch on the 5th October. I presume you will be able to get a similar tool for your machine, you want something that gives you a bigger surface area to move the fabric through if it is thicker or a difficult fabric. Let me know how you get on. Aneka x
Hi Aneka. Could you do a video on sewing a buttonhole on the collar stand. Usually there is no or very little fabric for the feet to grab ahold of and it is very thick and bumpy there. I have ruined more garments at this step or it looks homemade.
Hi Barb, I am planning a shirt making series, so I can do it in this. I personally use the Buttonhole Leveller or the Compensation Plate I show at the end of the tutorial for extra help in these areas. Aneka :-))
Made to Sew I’ll be looking for your shirt series 😁. I had never heard of these attachments until your b tutorials. Are these specific to Bernina’s? I have a Bernina 1230 and Huskvarna Designer SE....both older machines, but I will check with the dealer. Thanks so much for your reply😍
@@barbgallenberger7482 I am not sure if you can get them for other machines, I presume they must offer something similar. Let me know how you get on. Aneka x
2:20 Buttonhole Size. Measure the width of the button than add 1/8” (standard)(1/2” = width of the button in video) - 1/4” (for very big button like for button for coat / jacket)
Is the bobbin threaded correctly? I would probably stop (before you sew anymore), undo what you have done and check the bobbin before starting again. I would also test it first. Let me know how you go?
@@MadetoSew i finally got it to work. re-did the bobin several times, with little result. re-threaded the upper thread, and now it works. (which was only half done and also incorrectly done) all i have to do now, is learn how to operate my machine.
My dear teacher, if interfacing and layers of the fabric is too much for the button hole (just like 8 layers shown in video), do i need to increase the size of the needle?
Hello Aruni, do you mean your machine is struggling to sew the buttonhole? You could try a larger needle, however some sewing machines don't perform that well with buttonholes. You may need to reduce the thickness of the layers. Let me know how you get on. Aneka
So sorry you feel that way, if you have any questions I will be happy to answer them. Really sorry to confuse you and thank you for taking the time to share this constructive feedback. Aneka x
