Watch as I coach mama Chaly on engaging her son, Corbin in high-tech AAC for the first time.
Here are some things to take note of
1.) Our primary focus is modeling, not expecting him to even touch the device at first
2.) We're using highly motivating photos of one of Corbin's favorite activities--- bubbles!
3.) I'm involving the whole family, including Corbin's brother Jace because kids learn better from other kids than they do adults.
Prior to our initial session I had mom download a free AAC app on her phone just to start seeing what Corbin might do with an AAC option that had voice output. I'd recommend starting with a tablet or iPad (the larger size is easier for kids to see and access) --- and I'd also advocate for a more robust language system that will grow with his language development.
But we gotta take babysteps! Introducing high-tech AAC doesn't always result in a child activating the device right off the bat, and that's okay... we can work on training communication partners like mom, on how to start modeling language and invite Corbin to communicate when he feels ready.
