Taylor's fingerpicking technique is a central element of his style, known for its melodic complexity and rhythmic precision. He weaves intricate patterns, often incorporating alternating bass lines with intricate melodies on the higher strings. This technique, showcased in songs like "Fire and Rain" and "You've Got a Friend," creates a rich and textured backdrop for his warm, resonant vocals.
In contrast, Taylor's strumming adds depth and emotion to his music. His gentle, yet deliberate, strums create a rhythmic foundation that complements his introspective lyrics. This combination is evident in classics like "Carolina in My Mind" and "Sweet Baby James."
Taylor's guitar style is not just about technical prowess, but about conveying emotion and storytelling. Whether he's delicately picking the strings or strumming with heartfelt intention, his guitar work harmonizes perfectly with his introspective lyrics, creating a timeless musical experience that resonates deeply with listeners.

Stop shaking the neck pointlessly, it is not producing ANY vibrato therefore just looks poser-esque

Why do you shake the guitar neck so much? It doesn't add anything to the sound.

Agree, it doesn't add sustain to an acoustic.

🤣🤣🤣🤣That's a learned move, to make it look like your playing is complex.

It adds a bit of vibrato

@@scoobydoo4087 No it doesn't, and if you believe it does you need to explain how.

The weight of the guitar bouncing causes a subtle vibrato of the fretted notes.

you Taylored those progressions to James' signature sound.

This was a good and enjoyable intro indeed, but those aren't substitutions, they are extensions (same chord extended with an additional note). A substitution is quite different (chord substituted with one with a similar (or not so similar if you are into jazz) tonality - e.g. Em subbed for G; Db7 for G7).

Also economy of movement...JT does it I guess. I do it all the time. Play a chord a certain way so I can move to the next chord with a minimum of hand movement.

1 Play an acoustic 2. Use a capo 3 Exoticise basic chord shapes 4. Fingerpick everything 5. Utilize hammer-ons, pull-offs, and slide-up(down)-into(out of)-chords

Did a deep dive of James’ catalog a few years ago… I absolutely love his playing style. Definitely one of the best songwriters of his generation, and his sound is so instantly recognizable

Very nice. What I would also like you to explain is how JT takes a song with just three chords (Buddy Holly's Everyday, for example) and reharmonises it beautifully with several substitute chords.

Very educational video Tom! All I need now is a James Olson guitar. Having seen James Taylor live, I can say firsthand just how remarkable an artist he is.

This video is pointless.. It hardly shows how to 'JT-ize any chord progression' , but rather how to play Fire And Rain 🤔

There is some pretty good information for beginners. But you’re right, the title is misleading.
