@Plautus egal CAUSE THE SHAOLIN TEMPLE IS FUCKING FROM CHINA AND ITS BUDDIST,im buddist and i dont think they hate lgbtq+ but its not a good idea, trust me
@Jesus is the truth the resurrection and the light not rlly,if ur ready to change ur religion yeah, but if u dont even have any chinese martial arts expirence dont think about it
Lol I've stayed in a lot of monasteries and it cracks me up when people say "I'm sick of people I want to live in a monastery!", You mean you're sick of people so you want to live in close quarters with strangers day in day out whom you have nothing in common with?
Yeah true but they mostly Think of the movie monasteries where they are big and beautifiul and nobody needs to Talk to each other and everbody has a big room. And you just metitate all day
I find it easier to get along with strangers I knw nothing about. But once Ive known them for a certain amount of time I tend to start avoiding them. Idk, i just dont wanna have to make small talk all the time. Its easier with strangers but once those strangers become acquaintances then I just dont knw wht to talk about anymore lol
I have a friend that spent extensive time at the Shaolin temple, his stories are legendary, of course he has no pictures, and his family told me he has never been to China lol
I have a friend like that as well. I dont know how he has fitted so much in his few years alive lol...he's one of these lads that has done everything lol
Ive practiced shaolin kungfu in china. Its the best thing ive ever done in my life. Ive stayed for one year. It really changed me and everyone else who were students and stayed for 1y or longer, it have all affected their lives in a positive way. I will return next year and will visit my master's family as he has invited me to his home and he will be my master again too
Would you explain in precise what they teach?do they teach some spiritual stuff too?and how much money is needed to register?also i dont know Kongfu,Do they teach beginners?
When you train Martial Arts, you usually start to learn The Native Language of that Martial Art, like Japanese for Karate and Judo or "Chinese" for Kung Fu Styles or Korean for Taekwondo and so on You never trained right?
i literally respect people who do martial arts SO MUCH. the amount of dedication you need to be able to do it is amazing. as a kid, i was taken to learn it and i did it for a few months but quit cause i lacked commitment and i didn’t realise how serious it was. i realised how much i lacked commitment when i did different clubs like swimming for a few years but quit cause i got bored. so it was my fault for not knowing the reality of these things. but like fr, I RESPECT MARTIAL ARTS SM SO ILL JUST ENJOY IT FROM THE SIDELINES
Great suggestions! A lot of people don’t realize the warrior monk/full monk difference, and that the fully ordained monks stay well clear of the crowds of tourists. As you say, this is their way of life, not something for the casual visitor to join in just for the novelty. If people want a Buddhist experience, there are meditation and sutra recital programs at other sacred Buddhist sites like Wutai Shan or Emei Shan, where for a donation you can spend a few days living in the temple as a lay disciple.
The passion of joining shaolin temple among public has come from the movie named "THE 36 CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN". I am happy that you are enlighting us. Love from INDIA. Even there are people from India who have learned from shaolin temple. But they never speak this truth.People like us dream without any knowledge.Thank you once again.
WARNING I am the unprettiest human alive and I need YT to afford my house and the desires of my two girlfriends so please observe my highly stimulating videos, dear aypub
Why would you learn dialect as a foreigner haha, that sounds like a circumstance you would only end up in if you live in some incredibly rural area where people can't speak Mandarin. I think even the oldest people I've met even in Zhejiang spoke fluent Mandarin, though it doesn't matter because they still have the "you're foreign, you don't speak Chinese" ignore you to your face mentality haha, I'm not sure even knowing Hakka would help with that 🤔 I do remember visiting incredibly rural locations in Hunan and everyone speaking a dialect I had never heard of, with apparently no Mandarin, but I don't know any foreigners living there.

This is an absolute valuable and highly informative video. This is a potent wake up call for me and I am extremely grateful for it. I am ashamed and embarrassed of myself however. Turns out, I wanted the movie script version of being with the Temple simply because I never asked questions. I never made an effort to learn. I must be honest. I think I am one of the people you mentioned. I pictured peace, harmony, and beautiful martial arts. I am so sorry for my ignorance. While I still desire peace and calm, I now know my place without a doubt. My place is not with those men. What I have yet to learn probably wouldn't qualify me to deliver goods, much less get to know any of the good people there. Wishing the good people everywhere the best in life. And may you have good fortune in return for posting this video.
@@demonlxrd5492 You don't think I'm about to take you serious at all, right? Because I don't atall whatsoever. Your words are unverifiable claims that are meaningless and sound absolutely rediculous and completely implausible. So, yeah, good luck with that.
I'm so glad you exist, Ranton. It's nice to have someone credible to draw the line between what is fact and what is BS regarding Shaolin Temple and the monks.
Everyone imagines some fairytale Anime experience, Ngl I kinda thought that way too. A whole lot of dedication it would take. Awesome vid Ranton, you've Enlightened many.
I like how I can hear the Sensi in Ranton's voice even though he's Chinese. (Sensi is the Japanese word for teacher we use in Japanese Karate.) I'm not Japanese but I practiced Okinawan Karate as a white guy. Ranton is trying to be gentle but you had better be listening or you'll regret it. I've noticed in military and martial arts that's how instructors have to be in order to be effective. Respect and love to you, Ranton. I hope the Temple becomes all that you hope it can be. 🤜🤚
Just wanted to say thanks for the vids man. I dont personaly think i will ever travel to china myself, but to those who do wish to, i wish them luck.(and good fortune)
I feel like the point about knowing mandarin is just common sense. If you're gonna spend possibly years in a country where the native language isn't english then you're gonna have to know the actual native language.
My father as a child did 3 years of wu shu, I learned some of his techniques and I have done 10 years of taekwondo, i have a decent level of fight whit sticks amd now im learning how to use numchakus. Greetings from spain ✌🏻👋🏻
Honestly your edits are bang they give me life! And thank you for this video, I am currently learning the language Chinese language and will plan this journey one day.
Ranton, i know what i say will be common and also frowned upon, but you know how cool it would be if you could go back to the temple but this time as a youtuber? I know that is not allowed and its bad-eyed by all of them, but you can come down to compromises with them. You already experienced that from the inside, you know what you can do and what you cant. But it would be an amazing documentation about the life in the temple, routines and a lot of stuff people are really intrested in! I assure you you'd get millions of views.
I think what Ranton was getting at is that, no one is really going to be holding your hand at the Shaolin Temple, or at least, they really don’t want to. It’s really more so about being independent and taking it upon yourself to improve and learn. Your peers and teachers aren’t going to come to you and hand everything to you; every lesson, technique, etc. Of course they WILL be there to help and teach you, but it’s not going to be so easy and straight forward. Or, it MAY be so straightforward that you don’t even know and realize it. At least, that’s what I’m interpreting from this video.
Hey man I train king fu I do hung gar style for over 2 years and train with a monk and I’m not gonna lie that I get why people get disappointed after a month of ‘shaolin temple’
Meditation is focusing on inner thoughts by yourself and improving on your method of thought or just removing yourself from toxic thoughts. It's not about finding a state of mind at all. It's about finding a way to ignore external stimuli. Their methods help.
I’m currently training to go here one day. I loved this video so much, as I do every other haha. I am going to qufu school in China for one year soon. Wish me luck😂 don’t worry, I am learning chinese, and progressing very very fast (been learning it for 2 months I am a really fast learner)😂😂 I wish all of you the best of luck with your future
Good luck and even better Learning!! (wow, that didn't make sense...) So you're currently learning kung fu at a school near you AND Chinese? that's awesome! I am struggling in finding a teacher in Chinese myself, sadly... But I hope I will one day be able to go as well! I don't know where you're from, but I wish you safe travelling! And most of all, have fun!
As always a well-structured and informative (and enjoyable) video about Shaolin. I especially agree with your sentiment about learning Mandarin before heading to China (in general tbh), but then speaking as a Chinese language and culture major, of course I would :P Good times at 0:52 btw
I always found it amazing the amount of people that say they are ready to go or want to go yet don't even speak basic minimal mandarin. I genuinely don't get how they thought that was going to work for them.
I feel like a lot of people watch anime and see the protagonist go through brutal training to become strong but brave it out and expect it to be like that for them in places like Shaolin. Then they realize there's no training montage and it's actually hard, painful work and they're like wait fuck this and change their minds.
Ranton: _Here's how to join a Shaolin monk_ Me: *Excellent, plan is now in motion, once I become a Shaolin monk and learn the ways of Harmon, I will BEAT DIO* Real talk, thank you for this video, it was very informative
True about meditation... in Kung Fu we practiced the "still mind, still body" technique and the max I could do was 50 minutes... fkin painful and requires lots of focus.
My cons: I speak no Chinese, know no Kung Fu, potentially financially impaired, and am just strange. My pros: I'm a sucker for pain and punishment. I'm known to pick up knowledge fast. I practice and study Muay Tai, Western Boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, small amounts of Judo, Taekwondo, wrestling, and I'm a Capoerista. I'll let the comments give me their ratings, chances, and thoughts at making it in a monastery.
Not speaking Chinese seems like a deal-breaker, or rather, something that'll get you the absolute minimum out of the experience. Like Ranton said, who's going to hold them accountable if they just ignore you for being unable to communicate with them?
You sound like an edgy 12 year old. That and coupled with your profile picture, it makes me think you aren't even old enough to travel without an adult.
I would like to point out that if u indeed study mma for some time, u could probably still beat many of the monks in a fight. The only thing u really need is to learn chinese and you are good to go. Your body is prepared. Just take it easy, dont be edgy, get some money. You will do it. I believe in you!
I remember watching your fist vid on the politics and real Shaolin experience. It was great. Once again awesome points here, will be really helpful to people. Has always been my dream to go, even I have been reminded of the realities that you mention. And of course it all makes sense. Well done and thanks.
That moment when you're looking for a place where there is nothing to do but train, and some guy says "Wait! Before you run off to the shaolin temples, just know, it is basically a place where there is nothing to do but train."
Almost all of what you just said, not only made perfect sense to me, I already assumed. Especially the Mandarin part. I’m not ready to leave it all and go, I don’t even know very much martial arts. It would be really cool though just to visit and see what they do. I love history!
Shaolin is like a sect portrayed in Wuxia novel, you do your own study just like school. To be good study on your own, master that technique or master that math.
Hi Ranton, i doubt you will see this or anything but i thought i should try anyways. I am a 24 year old security officer looking to join the shaolin monks, i want to get the full experience not just for fighting but for spirituality and to find myself and discipline myself, i want the whole experience. Ive lost everything throughout my life and im at a stand still with my job and my life as a whole. Nothings changing no matter how hard i try, im tired of where i am and i also jeed guidance. I have no idea where im going or what im doing. Please note im amateur at martial arts at best and have no place with the monks but i honestly have nothing left and i work my life down to dust for a mediocre life. Ive lost my place, my daughter was put up for adoption against my will my folks disowned me. My bestfriend died and my fiance commited suicide and all my friends have left or betrayed me. I feel like the shaolin monks could be a good place for a lost soul to find itself. I do not know if there is anyway to get the full experience as a foreigner but i honestly just wanna become one of them possibly not even come back to the states. Ive lost everything. Plus even if i can't meditate i would find my own place to because nature over there is way better than over here. Even just being their would be better. I can also learn mandarin because im learning japanese on my own and quite successfully so i dont doubt i could learn mandarin. Writing it would be a bit more difficult for me though.
