To All the fatherless sons don’t ever let the feeling of not having a father figure showing you how to do things stop you from doing it. I did for a long time confidence really low and questioning my own position in life. Pick up a project and start doing it youtube has made it so versatile to learn and it’s come to the point where I’ve learned enough to satisfy myself knowing I can teach my own son how to work on things that my father couldn’t do.

The batteries only create the hydrogen gas when it reaches approx a 95% charged state or it is either fast charging or overcharged. There is always a possibility of residual hydrogen gas being left over from the previous charge cycle but highly doubtful. An exploding battery is always possible but if done correctly charging them is perfectly safe. I have been a professional technician for 35 years and never seen one explode yet. Only heard stories. And I have charged countless of thousands of batteries in my time considering I was in an extreme cold weather environment (Alaska) for most of my career.(Never attempt to charge a battery with low electrolyte or a frozen battery) You are supposed to shut off the charging vehicle before starting. But I have always connected the cables red on dead batt, then red on doner battery, then found on doner, and ground on engine block of dead to bare metal.

You need the car running for your altenator to keep your car charged, and to charge their system. This can easily take a few minutes. Especially if you're just letting the good car idle since it take higher RPMs for the alternator to push out decent amperage. Once the car that died starts you should disconnect the jumper cables. Let their alternator charge their system. So you need the good car running, but it shouldn't continue to be hooked up after a successful jump. If you're not sire check the owners manual. There are risks to certain equipment doing it this way, and frying a battery is the least of your worries if you fry something. Also make sure your not jumping a lithium battery with a standard battery. You need a smart charger or jump box with a charge controller.

Maybe if you have a Dodge Viper or an old Italian or German car with a V10 or V12 in it, Amps would be a concern. That $30-ish one I gave my dad fired up that 5.7L hemi just fine. Maybe if there's another issue like you're trying to get something started that's been sitting for years and it's not getting fuel, you would want one of those big jumper packs. But for a drained or dead battery alone on any reasonably sized engine I've dealt with, the cheap ones work fine.

His advice is accurate due to the risk involved with the production of hydrogen gases. But, with that being said, the do not start producing until the right conditions are met. 1) the battery reaches about a 90% charged state or 2) the battery is being fast charged or 3) there is a small chance that the gas could be still built up under you hood from the previous charge cycle (but doubtful). And those are the reason they are saying to not hook the last connection to the battery term but neither the block or strut bolt ect. Because they don't want a spark created directly over the battery. But NEVER attemt to charge a frozen or swelled battery or one that has a dry cells (low acid/electrolyte) because that can and likely will cause an explosion. In my professional 35year career as a technician I have only heard rumors of batteries exploding but I did get to see the after math once and don't want to be leaning over the hood when and if it ever does happen.

No. You always hook the black jumper cable to a grounded piece of metal. By connecting it to the black terminal on the battery you’re essentially getting the electricity to just barely and slowly go into the battery. It’s like this. By having a complete connection like that the electricity flows a lot like a small trickle out of a hose, while when you have it grounded it flows like a fully opened hose. So yes it will work by connecting both terminals but it will take way way way longer. And if the battery on the other vehicle isn’t great you can wind up running that one too low until now you’re both screwed. Lol

First off, I wouldn’t use a cheap set of jumper cables like those!, and if I had my pick up, I would be set with a set of “slave cables, for jump starting other cars. But aside from the cables, positive to positive is correct, however, the negative to negative is asking for trouble, what should be done instead is, negative of good battery to body/ engine ground of vehicle being jumped. This removes any spark potential from being over the top of a defective battery that could be “off-gassing “ hydrogen. P.s. a good set of slave cables, has a circuit for protection of the “running vehicle “, and also a circuit protecting for reversed polarity connection, but this can also be an issue for someone who has a vintage automobile that has a positive grounding electrical system!

Supposed to connect the black (ground) to a metal piece instead of the battery. This eliminates the rare chance of explosion due to gases emitted by the battery.

Couple of guys set their cars up to jump start one of the them. They don't have any cables. They ask around if anybody had cables. Nobody has a set. What they didn't realize is that they were in the parking lot of Walmart. They could've just walked in and bought a set so they could be done and ready for the next time. I don't know how long they set in the parking lot asking people for cables.

Agree negative should never go on the dead Carterton, if it's truly dead it can act like a giant resistor & absorb all the current, so dead car won't start......

Small exception. Hybrids and electrics don’t have a large enough 12v for jumping other cars.

Perhaps car manufacturers should put a designated ground post for jumping. It would make it simpler. Some vehicles there is no good place to clamp to that is accessible, not painted, and away from moving parts.

Everything this guy said was right except for one thing… if you want to avoid destroying your alternator from the good battery make sure you turn it off before attempting to crank over the car with a bad battery that will avoid destroying your alternator

Good way to fry a computer. Turn off helper car before cranking. Also most new cars have jump points labeled that are not on the battery. Just buy a jump pack to carry in the trunk and leave the cables in the attic.

the reason for making the ground connection to a ground such as engine block is to prevent a spark being created on to other battery because a spark at a battery may create a fire or explosion hazard from the venting battery gasses
@kfiscal01
@kfiscal01 11 месяцев назад
How about when you disconnect the ground from your good battery, for a repair, then reconnect after? There is always a little spark especially with newer cars because they always draw some power.

You can go to the good battery and hook up the red then black, go to the bad battery and hook up the red then black. Same difference, less back and forth.

no. you just f up both cars. A always find a good bolt to connect the ground. B let the good battery charge dead battery. after some time, shut off charging car, disconnect cables then start dead car

Did everything in this exact order , but it wasn’t working. Battery was just barely on. But i came to the comments and then saw people saying don’t connect negative to bad battery connect it to a metal piece to ground it and then my car turned on instantly.

Jump starter, jump cables and fix a flat. I carry jump starter and fox flat on my Harley’s and a jump cable extra in my car. Fox flat is sure nice when you come out ready to go but your tire needs work. Or it’s raining , or emergency. I jumped a V-8 with my jump starter.. mower, motorcycles. I never get stuck.. unless the worst happens.. on trips I carry an extra battery and alternator, belts, fuses..real spare tire.

I’ve been a merc Benz tech for 42 years and jumping vehicles is not what it used to be! These vehicles now deal with minimal voltages and amperage’s and all it takes is one little blue spark to blow something in a control unit so just be very careful when jumping newer vehicles

Once you jump start your car, unhook the cable right away, the two alternator can cause damage to your car charging at the same time

With cable you need another car with a kind driver to connect to his battery if ever they will stop to help you. I bought rechargeable portable battery to all my cars from Costco. I was able to start my car when needed. You won't regret if you have one.

Scotty Kilmer says you should never have two cars connected via jumper cables running at the same time, because they can damage electronics in the vehicle, as both alternators are working against each other.

please always connect cable by cable and do not clamp the negative terminal, only use the positive terminal of the dead battery to provide current to the battery and let the dead battery ground itself otherwise you are providing an earth to the healthy battery which also has to ground its own current. Furthermore to this, you still obviously have to earth the live battery to the dead vehicle so that the current can return through the dead battery and earth on the dead vehicle's body or go through the positive cable.

Epsons salt 1/2 cup & 1/2 cup distilled water. . Mix well . Battery will clean its plates for better charging . Battery will last longer too . Werx . If you take the neg battery turminal off and the car shuts off . Your altenator is not charging check all connections first before the swap

Hey grandad, maybe you should roll with the times and buy a decent jump pack? Probably about the same price as a good jump leads and takes up way less space. I left mine for over a year in the car and it had plent of power to jump my van.
@jcfpv3454
@jcfpv3454 Год назад
If you do that with a new car you can fry internal components. Have to leave the good battery car off so it's only providing the battery power. That was it doesn't surge the high power into the bad system.
