I think the below comments say it all. Great angle and I love the way we can see the timings of those minor details such as the sheet out in relation to the kite position. Awesome Job. Most other videos talk about carving hard upwind before the pop but I guess you are relying on the board speed and timing to build up the pressure in the lines. This works better for me!

Definitely one of the better jump tutorials. I think the only think you could do better is to slow the video speed down a bit at the moment of the jump. You keep repeating it at full speed and it's still not the easiest to follow every movement you make: positioning of the board, your stance, bar movements, ... I'd do the first run with pauses and pointers for newbies what to pay attention on, then maybe a slowmo and then at full speed. A little explanation of kiting slang (like e.g. "popping") would only be added bonus 😉 That camera and the stand is amazing though. You're the first person I see that uses these techniques and I'm very impresssed 🤩
@tomcourtkite
@tomcourtkite 4 года назад
cheers man, yes the slow-m could make a difference. However its important to realise how fast these motions are as its easy to not get the timing right if you always watch slow motions!! But Next ones I will slow-mo too!

Great video tutorial! Nice, clear angles from this camera. One suggestion - it would be very illustrative if you add the whole sequence in slow motion as well. That way one will be able easily to follow all the small&quick adjustments, e.g. the quick sheeting out just before kite reaches 12. Thank you for your work!

@@tomcourtkite I also love your video. I agree that this is the best youtube vid I have seen explaining high jumps. I'm still struggling with the landing part. The landing technique you suggest with the kite flying vertically downwards makes a lot of sense as you gain (almost) horizontal bordspeed by doing so. Disadvantage is that you land with a very high downwind bordspeed which is for me quite difficult.

Nice ! Before launching your kite to 12, do you release a bit of your edging and the go back to full edge to increase the tension in your lines (as for a pop without kite muvement) ? Seems like we can see a small 'S' curve on the water surface when you are in the air behind you 1:10
@tomcourtkite
@tomcourtkite 4 года назад
there could be a bit of this, each rider develops their own method of making this timing each time, counting, breathing or edge release... the theory is still the same!
@RRDIII
@RRDIII 4 года назад
Nice Tom - really good tip on sheeting out and using your whole body (not just legs + board) to increase tension in the lines and resist as the kite climbs to 12. You say send your legs behind you - do you mean edge/release/allow board and legs to go behind you as you leave water? I feel this happens naturally but maybe there is something intentional that I'm missing.
@tomcourtkite
@tomcourtkite 4 года назад
yes the sheeting pressure is the trick! Yes the legs do automatically end up behind you, but its part of a good release. The really important thing is to re-engage your core and get your gets back under you again!
@gusbisbal9803
@gusbisbal9803 2 года назад
Just as a note....Its not Kite momentum...... its line tension. There is a large difference between the two. I know it sounds pedantic but your sheeting out is to reduce line tension in the back lines to allow yourself to increase tension in the front lines... You do this bit really well actually. I realised I am doing this wrong. During this time the kite momentum remains the same because it is determine by its speed which is not changing (well ...not as much as line tension anyway) I also like your pop, which is different to the carve upwind style that I have been shown.
@jondeur2686
@jondeur2686 4 года назад
good stuff! The constant repetition of action sequence is really helpful. I have two questions. I've never heard anyone talk about spotting your takeoff before. Makes sense but I've never thought of it. What's the timing between spotting the takeoff and sending the kite? I know it probably makes a difference on wind speed and kite size, but is there something you can say about that timing? I think my biggest problem is the timing of all this stuff. Seems like about 14 things have to happen in 2 seconds. Second question. is it the lens you're using or is your kite really that low in the window when you're jumping? cuz it sure looks like it's in front of you and not at 12 o'clock. Thanks so much for your help. I've been riding 8 years and I'm still jumping ugly.
@BowxChickax
@BowxChickax 3 года назад
I was teached that you start stearing 4 seconds before takeoff if you are jumping in the waves. But i also learned the quicker you stear the higher you go, so start with 4 and see how high you can come before taking off a second
@bolanos68
@bolanos68 4 года назад
I guess the trick is to keep the hands locked together evenly at the bar to stop/lock the body in position to stop rotation? I think my mistake in my last session was not doing that and finding myself spinning under the bar and crashing...painfully!
@tomcourtkite
@tomcourtkite 4 года назад
the key point for that is re-engaing your core and bringing your legs back under you. Body weight back in the harness. If you 'hang' under the kite you can spin without control...
@deeearnshaw9551
@deeearnshaw9551 4 года назад
Love the clarity and repetition. Really helped me understand timing. Quick question- why do we need to tuck the knees and board up, only to drop them again? Is it about control or style (or both)?
@tomcourtkite
@tomcourtkite 4 года назад
Thanks for the question. Yes it is about control and also rotation... if you let your legs 'hang' without keeping them up and engaged. You can start spinning easier under the kite, which isn't what you want. A crunched core and upper body weight leaning back on the hook helps a lot with control! Style comes in with grabs later ;)

Instructor said everything looks good, so he was encouraging. But I’m still missing something for consistently good air and landing. I think it’s gotta be timing. You mentioned spotting your takeoff. Never heard of that before. What’s the timing with spotting your takeoff and sending the kite? HELP!!!
@vikingh3008
@vikingh3008 3 года назад
You are saying sending your legs backwards on takeoff, and releasing the edge, is this after you have left the water ? I thought it was all about keeping maximum pressure on the heals till the kite pulls you up ? If throwing the legs behind you on the water this would make you loose the edge ?
@tomcourtkite
@tomcourtkite 3 года назад
Just like it shows in the video mate. Use your legs to keep the tension even after you have taken off. If you edge until the end you will eventually stall all your speed
@vikingh3008
@vikingh3008 3 года назад
@@tomcourtkite so you come off your edge as you pull in the bar or do you kick into the board to pop out of the water with edge still engaged ? If kicking the legs backwards would that not make you kind of jump towards the kite which would give you less line tension
