This week I use the ramp I built in episode one:
• BUILDING A WOODEN GAP ...
And jumped with my friends in episode two:
• How far is too far? Mo...
To teach you the mechanics of jumping your bike HIGH or staying LOW and why you want to understand how to do both!
Building wooden kicker ramps and landings is an awesome SCALABLE way to practice your jump skills. By trying different distances and different speeds you can learn all the nuance and input your body will have on the bike while jumping different distances.
The take off is 38 inches high with an 11.5 foot transition and 48 inches wide
The landing is 42 inches tall. the downslope is 10 feet long and the case pad is 2 feet. The overall width is 8 feet.
I used 8 sheets of 3/4 inch plywood to cut all the sides and landing ramp surfaces and 2 sheets of 1/2 plywood doubled up for the ramp take off surface. The total number of 2x4s was approx 20

We were just trying to work out how to achieve this the other day by slowing down our approach speed and attempting to stand up in the jump. We were struggling with the concept do we delay the compression until just before the front wheel exits the ramp and stand up but your video explains it much more clearly - thank you !
@accolade37
@accolade37 4 года назад
Great video Jeff. Thank you for the detailed explanation. Where I live we don't have a lot of trails with manmade jumps. Our jumps are things that occur on natural obstacles such as rocks, log rollovers and dirt rollers. These features have lips and I have seen people jump them, but with no real landing, I never really understood what the bike does after you are in the air.

Great advice as always. It’s good to confirm I am not doing everything wrong when jumping lippy jumps. I tend to keep my body a little forward and knees bent, then just before the lip, push the bike forward and jump with my legs. Sometimes, I position myself back and let the bike do all the work. Maybe that is not the best, but it works when in doubt and when I am tired.

3:37 Similarities between right and left photos: in both photos, the hips are in the same location (above bottom bracket). Also, the bike is in the same position in both photos - Differences: on the left, his arms are more bent and his back is leaning a little forward. His head is closer to the front wheel. In general, it appears to be he is closer to the bike. On the right, his arms are less bent, his back is leaning away from the bike, and his head is farther from from the front wheel. In general, it appears to be he is farther from the bike. - Here’s how I like to think of it: the right photo is like sitting down in a chair and leaning into it. The left photo is like when your just getting up from the chair
