This video was very important! Anyone who lives in a colder climate should never keep piggies outside! If they have to, they need to buy a shed to keep the hutch in, and insulate it as well! As you've said, dampness and cold can kill a piggy! Also, putting a safe heater, like ones that are specially made for animal enclosures, is great. Thanks for a great video!

A hutch is not an option. They are too, too small. Not enough floor space.

Thank you Susan :) I think a lot of people don't realise how dangerous the cold weather is to guinea pigs so hopefully this will help people understand the importance of keeping them warm and also bringing them indoors when it gets too cold for them. As you say, safe heaters are also a great idea!

It depends on the hutch size. Most hutches are too small but not all. And keeping guinea pigs in a large hutch in the right weather providing they are well cared for is absolutely fine.

I appreciate you including the temperature range. That’s important to know when I’m ill and can have hot and cold flashes. In which case, what is comfortable to me may not be comfortable to the Guinea Pig.

Thanks Monique.My piggies live indoors all year round in our annexe/studio room. I did buy them a heat pad the same as yours last winter for the very cold nights although I heat their room for them when it's colder so they're always cosy :-) x

Last night I gave my guinea pigs a hot water bottle because it got super cold. I’m going to get a heat pad though because they are much safer. Thank you so much btw because my guinea pigs live in a shed and I’m not sure if I gets heaps of light and my brother is a mechanic so the fumes might hurt my pigs! My dad and I are making a super long cage for them soon. Tysm!

Anyone know if a 100w-150w ceramic Bulb will do fine on a Midwestern Guinea pig cage? Would the cage be able to handle the heat?

It depends on the cover you're using but you would need some airflow to prevent condensation.

Would you recommend using an electric heating pad? I want to get one because they are bigger and softer than the small, disk heating pad, but I also want to make sure it’s a safe idea.

An electric heating pad poses a danger because if they do find a way to nibble it they could be harmed by the electrical current. I would definitely advise against this and use the microwaveable heatpads instead.

I live in Canada and hutches just get way too cold for guinea pigs to live in so mine live inside!!

Absolutely! It really depends on where you are in the world because some places don't get very cold or very hot which makes it much safer. But we do always recommend housing piggies indoors if you can wherever you live because they become a part of the family and are more likely to be well cared for.

Danke. In Deutschland ist es leider sehr verbreitet Meerschweinchen draußen zu halten. Dieses Thema macht mich seit Jahren so wütend. Ich habe meine Jungs immer drin gehalten im warmen Wohnzimmer bei mir. Aber meine Landsleute sind manchmal sehr stur und uneinsichtig.

Good advice to keep them warm. Just make sure not to warm this also can be harmful .

If it feels too cold for you then it will most likely feel too cold for the piggies so that's a good guide to go by. The same goes for the heat as too hot is really bad too.

I would never have my piggies outside! I find that so cruel! Mine are free range inside fully socialized & liter box trained in a piggie fortified home.
