I remember switching from FAT16 to FAT32 and defragging was so much better with the extra space. Picture homer drooling over a steak 😂

In addition, I do a dism and an sfc week,ly, and back up to an external ssd, weekly.

Thank you, Leo. We had a long haired cat. We Miss her so much. 😢 We don't miss her cat fur that got everywhere. Growing up, we also had a couple of Corgis and don't they she'd hair 😂.

I like FreeFileSync, which will very quickly update your backup (by syncing a mirror copy).

On the disk cleanup part, I used to use this tool on the regular and eventually I ended up noticing that it was somehow taking up space on my drives, I would use the tool (might say that I can obtain like 101mb worth of space for example), wait for it to finish deleting the files, then I would check one of my drives and it had even less space than before, I even decided to check if it was cleaning anything and found out the no matter how many times I opened the program it would always say I can free up "x amount of space." I checked on other websites to see if anyone else had these problems and sure enough they did, apparently Microsoft would deprecate the disk cleanup utility (so far in windows 10 don't know about 11) and would have another option called "Storage sense" that would be a better alternative to deleting files, but also heard that doesn't really work as well either and knowing this, I just ended up never using the program again.

actually for dos and the begginning of windows 95 and up was always a fan of norton utilities the one for dos and windows would use that for maintenance was excellent

Norton utilities used to give you a list of things to do to speed your machine up, and not one of them was more effective than uninstalling Norton utilities 😂

You said the driver updates are not necessary. By default, Windows update will download driver updates, including some BIOS updates, and we are not given the choice to select which updates will be applied. I prefer to limit the number of updates applied at any one time. I once had Windows update download major Windows updates, driver updates, and a bad BIOS update in the same session. I wasted a lot of time trying to recover Windows from BSOD errors before I tried reverting to the older BIOS, which was the last thing I expected to crash my machine. That BIOS version was eventually pulled from the manufacturers site. I now have Windows update configured to let me select the updates that are to be applied.

Correct, Windows Update will do drivers. Beyond that, though, seeking out more updates outside of WU is typically not needed.

Drivers can have bugs especially when they are released. Always create a recovery drive or restore point just in case.

I have read an advice not to use CCleaner and similar software, that it can damage the system. I am proud to have learned using the Windows tools to declutter and that should be enough. The less third party stuff in the PC, the better, for most third party stuff. I don't mind installing ublock origin into browsers that are not as robust in protection as Brave is, for example. I debloated most of the stuff that came with the new PC and got rid of any extras that came after reinstalling it. I am learning what helps and what doesn't in Windows maintenance, and CCleaner has not earned my trust. I used to use it before, not anymore. At most I would use it to overwrite data on an external disk, but that's it. And for that there are other software out there, doing a similar job, so it is just a matter of choice. But cleaning registries? Thanks, but no, thanks.

At TS 5:52 you talk about Using Disk Cleanup in Windows along with CCleaner. Since CCleaner has been hacked in recent years at least twice that I know of concerns me. The articles I've read say it's the paid version & doesn't mention the Free Version. Were both versions hacked? Is the Free Version safe in your opinion? So far CCleaner doesn't have a good track record when it comes to providing security. Your thoughts?

I've never heard of CCleaner being hacked. Worst was that for some time they were including foistware / PUPs.

Google 'When was CCleaner Hacked' The attack timeline for the 2017 hack is as follows: March 11, 2017: Hackers accessed an unattended workstation of a CCleaner developer March 12, 2017: Hackers accessed a second unattended computer connected to the same network April 4, 2017: Hackers created a customized version of ShadowPad Mid-April to July: Hackers prepared the malicious version of CCleaner August to September: The attack infected over 2.3 million users who downloaded or updated their CCleaner app. I did read another post that they got hit again (I think) in 2020 or 2021. Hence my concern.
