HOW TO KEEP YOUR GARAGE COOLER - Does Garage Insulation Work in Extreme Heat
I live and work on classic Porsches and Pontiac's in Phoenix, Arizona, and during the summer the average high temps are 115f. I need a way to keep my garage cool so I can continue to restore a classic 1967 Porsche and 1967 Firebird.
I am working on my 1967 Pontiac Firebird, restoring it to a daily driver condition, I hope you subscribe and follow along on my journey.

That is one hot garage. I would think a thicker foam board insulation would work a little better, but not sure in that heat. Try to stay cool brother.

Gotta get thicker panels and get the walls around the garage insulated better! Thanks for watching.

I used regular foam board for my door and ir worked much better. I then used similar foam outside that. But the key was that all my walls are also insulated. Many builders don't insulate garage walls in our are because the code doesn't require it. Mine are and it makes a difference.

Yes, that is one thing my buddy said to get done... he did his garage a few years back and said it made a big difference.

You need foam insulation to have any measurable effect. That bubble foil garbage has an R-value of ~1, the same as a single pane glass window. A foam board garage door insulation panel will have an R-value of 4-8 depending on thickness.

Is this the foam insulation in sheets or a spray in product?

I think that type of insulation is best when the garage door has direct sunlight on it. But if you had thicker door insulation and ran an AC unit, it would help keep cool air in.

Looks like I need the thicker panels for the door, and get the walls better insulated as well to stay cool during the summer.

I want to say that with this type of insulation you're supposed face the reflective side to the inside. If it doesn't make a difference, maybe try the brand name stuff. I'm looking to purchase reflectix. Good luck

1-1/2 inch Celotex or any brand of house sheathing works well. The thin sheet roll stuff doesnt do much.

I think I might have to do this, thanks for the tip!!!!

I thhink you need the ick stuff that fills up whole panel cavity. Big sheets at the Lowes or Home Depot. It's still getting hot everyday. I suggest a mini split. A neighbor got one for $1300 and installed for $600. I hot places like you and I live it's about the only thing that will work.

I have been kicking around the idea of going to the mini split, everyone I know LOVES THEM!!

Insulation is something I really need in the shop. Being a metal building, it just radiates heat. Sorry to see that stuff didn’t work out for ya.

Going to try a thicker panel and look into getting the walls insulated to see if that will help.

Any place that the metal of the door is still exposed to the free air inside the garage will "heat" the air inside the garage.

What is "R" rating of that insulation?
