Since I moved to France, I noticed the shoes here are spotless clean. I'm a 'chappal' guy myself and love to wear my slippers everywhere; no I refuse to call them thongs.
Fitting-in in France also has to do with clean shoes. You wash your clothes and get a haircut often, but everyone else's shoes are clean. Now you don't want to be an outcast do you?
