I bought a 72 Bug in 74 at the age of 18, with zero experience working on cars. I drove that Bug for 10 years and put over 300k miles on it. In that time I rebuilt the engine 3 times using nothing but that book. I got 100k miles out of each rebuild, and I drove the bejesus out of that car. If you own a vintage VW you need this book. 55 years later and I’m restoring a ‘72 identical to my first car, and this is still my primary instruction manual. It’s written in plain english. It’s old school. And most importantly it works! As Muir says “do what it says. Nothing more. Nothing Less”.

I was 18 when I got a job at the local bug shop. after he layer me off the owner and I have been friends. now forty years later and several bugs, I still refer to that book. If this book doesn't do it for me, I go hang out with my buddies at the bug shop. for what you are doing with it, that book will serve you well. you might read the foreword; it really tells what is in the heart of bug guy and explains what I call a "mechanical soul"
