Here's how to kick start a Royal Enfield Bullet 500 Classic Motorcycle when it is cold www.hoohoohobli... with an Amal 930 Carb. This bike runs well with the carb. It has a 200 main jet in it, and the bike has the louder factory muffler on it. Kick Starting this bike is a meditation- a prayer to the gods of speed. It makes me aware of all of the moving parts, the piston, the fuel, the electricity I'm sending through the coil. It really connects me with the motorcycle.
I hope this Royal Enfield cold start video helps you learn how to kick start a Royal Enfield Bullet. Some people say you don't need to do the pre-start kicks I show in the video, but with my bike it helps to do the warm up kicks before turning the ignition on.

I want to thank you so much for making this video! I Bought a '96 Royal Enfield bullet 500ks in november, And have never been able to start it. Literally a minute after watching your video the bike started third kick! I definitely feel like more of a man now! HaHa!

1. With engine off press clutch and gently pump the kick lever five times. 2. Turn the engine on with key. Turn choke on. Press the decompressor till needle moves to centre. 3. Apply gentle pressure on the kicker till it gives way. Once you reach full range allow the kick lever to come back just twenty percent of its range and quickly but gently do a short kick. Hold the kicker down at the end. That’s important.

Kick 10 over times first... What a load of bollocks. Just turn on the fuel, choke it, and give it a firm kick over TDC. Job done.

I have a 1972 500 bullet now, & previously owned another 9 bullets .. inc the forerunner a rigid model G. But Ive never seen such a carry on like this before with 10 kicks. What play acting! 😂😂😂

Just tickle the carb more with several presses, until petrol shows on the tickler. ONE good kick is all thats required- NOT 10 times turning over on the kickstart!

Spot on Gary. I'd probably flood the tickler. I'm more of the lazy prod school with a Bullet, the prod has to go all the way through but no gymnastics required.

Thanks for the information! They don't sell them here in hardware or department stores in Belgium. It's quite hard to find them; my other pair got stolen last year and I don't know other manufacturers that make them (and look good). Really great that you did so much RE tutorials about valves etc, enormously helpful! You're a great dad too, wanted to say that to you haha.

I had a 250 Crusader and a 500 Bullet with Sidecar frame in the early 70's. The Bullet was found in a shed in the middle of a field . The farmer was happy for us to take it away! We poured some petrol into the tank and it fired up on the third kick. We drove away, no helmets , two seated and one lying along the sidecar frame! Those were the days,etc,etc. I think I have still got the pristine condition wotkshop manual for the Crusader.

Guys stop saying that only Punjabis know how to ride bullet.. lol.. Bullet is a lifestyle which people like irrespective of place and culture. And yes I am a Punjabi from Ferozpur, now in US and missing my bullet :( . Very good video. I bet u r having fun with ur bike. I am trying to see if i can get one in US but they are expensive here, I think harley would be cheaper but harley is no bullet.

i just bought a new 2010 royal enfield bullet 350 last month here in india,anyhow they have stopped producing efi models for a year cause the standard model with classic point ignition system is highly in demand here.one have to wait upto six months to get his bike or pay the black to dealer if they want it soon.i have changed the handlebar( i put the classic one on it )and the same old original silencer & the xenon lamp for headlight this bike gives a special kind of attitude when you ride it

Hi Hoobs, You saved me a lot of kicking there boyo, I have just fitted an Amal 928 (28mm) to my 500 Bullet Sixty-5 and was trying to start it like I used to start my bikes in the old days, (the 60s) full choke flood like hell and jump on the kickstart with a"long swinging kick" but this didn't work, After watching your vid again, I remembered it from a while ago, now 1st or second kick thanks a heap.BTW I run a 180 main, 106 needle jet, std needle in middle notch & no 3 slide may go to a 3.5 DJ

I have a 2003 royal enfield electra 4speed right gear , got it as a birthday present when i was 18 . I’ve traded many bikes aside but enfield is something that will stick to me forever and the right shifter makes it more unique than bikes in the market today .

Boots are a good idea. As with the BSA, if you know how to get the piston in the right position first, it starts easily and you don't get hurt.

You are getting your motor past TDC on the compression stroke and ready for 2 good revolutions before it fires. The fact that the amp meter is showing a draw on the battery due to ignition position is an indicator sure, but you should be able to just "feel it". The fact that you just touch the tickler and you have success starting is because you're using a choke. A real tickeled amal's float level is raised to the gasket height when the mixture is truely enriched.

Please note the orientation of the tappet door and especially the packing underneath as it has to be put back the same way, or else oil may leak. Spin the push rods with your thumb and if they twirl around freely, they are too loose. They need to move under thumb pressure but should not spin freely. Unlock the lock nut, tighten the tappet and lock the lock nut. Now stand on your kicker and make sure there is no compression loss. The kicker should hold your weight. with this setup < 60 mph

Most people ive seen seems to think the tickler is a pump, its not. What you do is pushing the floater down to overflow the carb, the correct way to treat it is just push it down and keep it down until gas comes seeping out.

Thankfully mine doesn't need the 10 time kick. Turn the key to on - choke on carb - one round to the throttle - decompress and a small roll of the kickstart until the needle is at 0 (TDC) - big kick to the kickstarter without rolling the throttle - close choke. All this in the morning. If she's warm she doesn't need the off throttle and the choke. She runs on the original Mikcarb 28 for 16 years so far without problems.

10 times is too much, release the compresssion in 2-3 kicks, make it in 1 and go a slow smooth kick, royal enfield starts with lightest kick in all motorcycles, thumbs up if u agree

I realise it is all about timing. You needa release the compression lever right after you kick. In other words, the compression lever should be released during the "up-ward" motion of the kick-start lever. I get on my bike, turn on the ignition, and kick it once. that is all I do. I don't even do the whole process you described in your video and it starts first kick every time.

You can make the bullet virtually silent. The only sound you will hear is the exhaust beat and the small peep-peep noise from the oil breather from the bottom of the cylinder block. There are 3 basic types of noises that can be arrested 1. Cam noise from backlash 2. Tappet noise 3. Rocker arm noise. Valve guide noise needs a visit to the machine shop. To adjust your tappet, open the tappet inspection door (on the gear box side below the cylinder block).

You do not need so much kicking around just you mentioned. Bring it to TDC, that's ammeter to zero, press down the kicker a bit more, then release the kicker. Now don't kick it down, just softly force it down, it will start without any effort at atll. Just that you need to practice it to get it correct.

Bullets are now made in India, and yeah, they are really good. I think the new ones can go till 100 mph. The big disadvantage in the Bullet is it's break. Takes forever to adjust, since the break is on left leg.

nice bike, i think putting a modern air filter spoils the nice and authentic looks, it maybe more efficient but looks odd. i think a trumpet or bell type air intake would look better.

Sir, Really nice video. Thanks for posting. The bike here comes with a Mikuni Carb and a really small 90 size jet. You might want to tighten the tappets if you do not ride too fast. It seems to me that the tappets are a bit loose.

leave the choke off,prime the tickler on the carb till you see a shot of gas come out ,gently kich the engine over till you meat compression,turn on the ignition and give her a healthy kick,should start right up,never used the decompression release on my BSA B33,except to stop the engine as they used a magneto and didnt have a cut out switch.

to start my bullet all I do is swith on the petrol, pull on the choke, ignition on and then a big kick, showing it whos boss, its no goog giving it a half hearted kick as it will only end in tears,

great method, i actually use the same but not a hard kick is required. when points/Ignition are fully set it can even start by hand. this revelation ( by a mechanic) sorted my starting process a lot. earlier i used to kick and hump and puff while my wife will laugh and ask me to sell this POS, now i can start it in one kick. do you still have this bike? RE has lot of bikes these days like Intercpetor , what are your views on that? sadly these old bikes are not seen much, the new RE bullets have like wiped them off nd i see these like 10x from past times. this is good and sad on same time. i loved old bikes and i have two of them, not intending to sell them.

I still have it, but I need to get it running. It’s been sitting for a long time. The new Royal Enfield motorcycles are a lot more reliable and faster, but they don’t have the same look and feel as the classics.

Hey .. it is much easier to kick start while standing on the right side next to the bike. Rest of the ritual remains pretty much same. Try that and I am sure you'll find it easier. Ride safe!

You won't build up compression by kicking it over, it's a bloody four-stroke with inlet and exhaust valves, if kicking it over many times builds up compression then it would explode whilst it was running, just tickle the carb until fuel comes out then kickstart it.

I just gently kick my 500 and the compression stop dead at Tdc, i cant miss it. But tnen i have high comp piston and other fun stuff...Havent passed the 170 km/h yet but im getting there :) I think it is a really funny bike, like my old moped just sluggish and heavy.

When you put it little past the tdc indication (?) on the ammeter when the cylinder is compressed, am I right in saying that you are in power stroke, just after tdc? If so at the end of the video, it doesn't initially start (2:40), so don't you have to put it all the way back to the tdc of power stroke again because that positioning is screwed up? Or am I understanding this wrong? Thanks for sharing the video!

hey hoohoohoblin Nice bike you have there. I own a 1995 350cc standard and I live in India. Believe me when I say your bike, does not sound terribly healthy. It sounds kind of wheezy. what model is yours and which year was it built? I do not know if this is specifically for non Indian REs because most of the bikes here which are in anywhere from decent to good condition, sound very crisp and deeper.

my favorourite bike, I love these and i hope to get one someday! how do they do for riding in mtns or with the sidecars? I know top speed is only about 75 and that it may not be good to ride on an interstate but i really like these bikes!

Mine is old Royal Enfield standard 350..today while I was starting my bike a exploding sound came from air filter box also some white smoke,after some time I kick started again and it started. +hoohoohoblin if I do that the engine will stop when ever I release the accelerator....... that means I have to keep my hand on the throttle always.......also while changing the gear.......(thats why I increased the slow worcking.)..any suggestions.... pls

+hoohoohoblin it's the 1st time I'm riding a royal Enfield..... so because of this problem I was not able to ride properly.... the bike turn off whenever I release the throttle....
