I was the owner and driver in this video. Just to clarify; the engine was not faulty to begin with. Redlining it was also not the problem. Going in circles with a stock oil sump, that killed the bottom bracket and therefore ruining the engine. This stupidity cost me about 6k $. Worth every penny.
Linus Sjöberg then i doupt that it was only the lack of oil, maybe dirt in the oil channels or worn down bearings if i were to guess.. anyways i'm glad your car is still running and didn't end up on a scrap yard ^^ it sure is a very cool ride
@@username8644 Yeah Lol I have a 2011 STI now, I’ll probably mod it, just because I wanna wake it up just a tad. But the guys on the forums and FB groups make me anxious because they always seem to be blowing up but, can’t be sure of how meticulous they were with maintenance and what not.
The FIRST thing you NEED to replace is the oil pan IF you intend on doing ANY type of aggressive driving. A road race pan is needed. The engine does not hold enough oil as it is and the pick us can easily starve
The first thing you need to do is buy a better designed car if you're going to do aggressive driving. The design fault that the STi can't handle lateral Gs without killing the engine is totally pathetic.
@@aluisiousbasically no car can handle that kind of driving stock. every single purpose built racecar has a dry sump system unlike basically every road car ever (the sti included), so if you wanted to get anything that can be driven like that stock you need to pay half a million dollars.
IntelGoesHard ive been thinking about that... its hard to get a 2.5i turboed while keeping it reliable, and a GT has too many problems... if the GT was reliable it would be a beast with 250hp/torque
Im a under 25 living in New Zealand subies get raxed by maoris very often. The costs are so bad that all of the main companies wont even give me insurance on my 98 RS-B legacy. One of them said 250 a month just for 3rd party :O
Me thinks a Killer B oil pickup may have prevented this. FYI, my brother in law threw a rod in his 15 WRX in auto cross doing a long slalom. Oil starvation is something Subaru needs to address with their designs, as well as forged internals for the WRX and STI models. Can't forget better head gaskets. They would sell more.
Engine in this car was damaged just some seconds after i stopped recording, the crankshaft somhow got stuck in the block and engine could not turn around.
not my car, i just filmed, problem was that previous owner had replaced the crank and got something wrong, thats why it broke somehow, he fixed the problem by putting a new engine in
Anthony Mense Thought the same who abuses an engine so mutch that crankshaft gets stuck, then you realy are driving like an maniac everytime you drive it.
Yeah, all of his oil probably got swung to the side of his oil pan, away from the oil pickup. Without any type of oil upgrades doing any high-G constant turns like this will eventually lead to the oil pickup not being able to grab and deliver oil to your crankshaft, bearings, etc. Leads to spun bearings, stuck crankshafts, you get the idea.
I’ve got a stock 2015, I have no understeer issues drifting on pavement, but….. doing what op did would destroy my clutch, and us 2x already…. I’m never gonna learn…
Pretty common issue under high G loads, the oil pan is poorly designed and it will all slosh to one side. Oil starvation leads to blowing a piston or completely seizing. Get a good aftermarket oil pan with upgraded baffles if you plan to drive at high G forces.
NO y'all dumbasses xD use your brain if ya have one ... think . you think the subaru magicly stopped after the video ? no it was getting broken DURING the video xD im not just talking to no subaru were .... and y'all 2 idiots responding to it . y'all DUMB .... use your brain please
there’s a story about a gr86 owner trying to get a warranty claim on a 13,000 mile engine he tracked and drifted and this is what immediately comes to mind
I have a friend who did this during winter in an empty parking lot. He did it with an imported right hand drive GC8 in that classic rally blue and with that classic rally wing. It's honestly a beautiful car and I'm happy to know it's literally like 200 meters away from where I am in a garage 200 meters is like probably I'd say 600ft?
@@zacharyzientko2277 actually the rear wheel drive model broke shortly into filming so most of the stunts were on the all wheel drive model, including the opening J turn
the production team on that movie gifted Ansel the car after they wrapped. I'm pretty sure he still has it and theres a few clips floating around of him ripping around in the car for a few seconds as well as some other cars.
Just selling my red STI. Never abused( don't type red STI on RU-vid) I always take care of my cars. All highway miles. Mature driver. 20,000 or best offer. Now I'm scared to buy one :(.
shredder well I've had the car for over 2 months now and the engine, gearbox and diffs all work like a charm. The only sign of wear is that 3rd gear has a slight whine when you drive slow. I think that's pretty damn good for a 12 year old car with 126k miles on it
Matias Eklund Thats great, just don't assume that older drivers don't beat the shit out of their cars.... some actually take WAY more risks and drive WAY faster than young people because they typically have more money and have been on the road for a lot longer. The most extreme driver I know is 47 and just happens to love subarus
Honestly this shouldnt hurt an STI. What likely caused an issue is bouncing off the rev limiter and low oil. The STI even has a diff temp sensor that will come on if it gets hot which can happen from doing awd donuts.
Jokes on you, it’s coz he was doing doughnuts and all the oil goes to one side of the engine, starving the opposite side from oil and then it’s game over from there, shitty boxer engine design
Well gents good to see you again. The algorithm helped us meet once again. I had no interest in this video when I opened RU-vid, and yet it did it. I am here now.
I think centripetal force caused by the over donuting forced the oil to get stuck in the heads and extremities of the engine and thus main bearings were dry and spinning hard causing friction welding.
@@lincolnbroaddick3838 Centripetal force is the force REQUIRED for circular motion. Centrifugal force is the force that makes something flee from the center. Think of spin put on snooker/football/tennis/ping pong ball Vs a cars movement. The engine isn't rotating solo in its own axis.
4-year college grads be like: 1) Get my diploma 2) Rack up an absurd amount of student loan debt. 3) Buy an Impreza WRX STi 4) Thrash the hell out of it 5) Rack up an absurd amount of automotive repairs on top of pre-existing loans. 6) Mooch off my parents for financial help until I'm 40.
Doesn’t look dead to me. Ripped it up, but not so long that you melted a piston. That’s the thing isn’t it? You can’t just keep going forever, you have to let it cool off occasionally. I actually caught the thermal insulation under my hood on fire once after a particularly lengthy series of donuts in the snow. Fortunately it was snowing so I just tossed a bunch of snow on it 😆 the turbo got so hot it started smoldering the insulation. From that day forward I have a fire extinguisher in my car. Evo X Edit: I saw the post explaining what happened, that blows, glad that never happened to me. Hope it doesn’t since I love to play in the snow
He’s doing circles in an AWD car with almost no control over the car in terms of how big the circles are, there’s nothing that will ever be impressive to me about someone drifting with nothing to hit
@@Michael-wc2ll drifting in an AWD car doesn't prove you can drift by yourself. It proves the car can hold the drift but you're not the one actually controlling it
Nathan Siriano I know there's three diffs. I should have clarified: say goodbye to ALL of your diffs. The fact that it's an STi doesn't change the fact that this kind of abuse destroys diffs. You can go back to your Ken Block videos now.
I can attest to this. I had an 05 wrx and my rear diff failed and cost me $1000 to rebuild. So did the gear box. Running gear in these cars is not meant for any more power than stock. All gears are weak.
and THAT ladies and gentlemen is why i DID NOT buy a used subie and went ahead and got a brand new one.i wanted new car smell, not burnt clutch smell.haha
The front wheels will cause Understeer, and the rear wheels will still cause oversteer regardless. If you think about the mechanics of drifting, countersteering is similar to front tires that are oversteering, in the sense that the tires are almost acting as they have weak grip, and are trying to push you in the opposite direction of the apex. But the rear tires constantly pusing you in the apex, and forward is quite literally what causes the drift. Awd owners know that the car can understeer, and basically abuse that since their rear wheels also work too. Really interesting stuff imo.
I’m happy I saw this. I like doing crazy shit like this too but I didn’t know it can damage the internals just from inertia and not enough oil circulating. I’m about to buy a 2017 WRX and you sir are my Predecessor and I will follow in your footsteps🤟🏽
Thank you very much, but soon I wanna buy a second bugeye for a swap! And the shell from my car whould be used by a frend who is a rally pilot so.... The car stay alive:)) Thank you again! Cheers.
20k FIRM I know what I have, low miles, highway miles, never raced or rallied, oil changed every 2 thousand miles, tires have LOTS of life left, doesn’t need any work, head gaskets done last month, purrs like a kitten
Heard a story about a guy who owned an Subaru Impreza WRX STI. That guy was racing and he blew 3 engines in the exact same place. He found out after 3 engines that he was taking a curb too fast and the oil would get stuck at one end of the engine. Basically, he was starving the engine for some seconds but it was enough to blow it. Same thing happened here, it's not about the redlining, it's about the centrifugal force.
