Thank you, thank you, thank you! We sunk so much money into our back yard, and I’m losing it to weeds. The planting bed area enormous, and I needed a better plan of attack. I appreciate your attention to detail and showing each product and how to use them to minimize environmental impact. The weed battle in the South is real!
This is right on time. I removed my old mulching a few weeks ago and have not replaced it yet. Due to the rain and sunshine I have a ton of weeds that have popped up, I needed this information. Gras B Gon is a good product.
I LOVE this video! You’re so well spoken and clear about application with each product! I will add, from personal experience, if you use the weed blocking fabric, be extra attentive to spraying for ants. My yard has the blocking fabric in all the garden beds, over the years ants have come and gone, making ant hills wherever they chose to, thus bringing fresh dirt and soil right on top of the fabric layer. I’ve been out in the yard for hours and hours using the leaf blower and a hard rake to move the rocks around, and to blow the old ant hills back into the grass to stop the ruthless weeds.
You're an excellent teacher, clear and articulate and you have a nice voice. Was wondering if you've ever tried the vinegar method? I just can't bring myself to using chemicals even though vinegar is one it isn't a forever chemical. When the rain comes it dilutes and goes away after the weeds have died off. I found it to be affective so for spot and wide treating, in a garden sprayer I've switched to using straight vinegar, 1tsp Dawn Dish Soap per 1 gal. saturate to soak down to the root on a sunny hot day and you'll notice a difference in hours. You have to get down to the root by saturating or otherwise it comes right back. It's a broad spectrum so it kills anything it's sprayed on. To prevent weeds there's the cardboard roll method. Thank you for sharing your expertise!
BYD when I seen the title for this video I was thinking I was going to hear your patented SKEET SKEET at sometime during the video. You had plenty of windows for it my friend. Very informational video keep up the great work.
I have my yard sprayed monthly for weeds but it is a losing battle since the neighbors on both sides of me just let the weeds all grow in their yards. I guess I will have to end my spraying, as it is a losing battle with neighbors who do this. ;-(
I have to get down on the ground and hand pull weeds because desirable seeds are coming up as well plus there are a lot of plants among the weeds. So hard.
Thank you so very much for your channel. I live in the country and we get anything and everything here. I do have vines that grow up on trees and literally suck the life out of them. What can I use? I have an ash tree that is at least 3 stories high and the vines are literally making it die off and fall apart. Please help!
Please I need your help. I started my flower bed 2 mths ago and had 3 inches of topsoil/compost put in then I spread pine straw down...I had to leave for 2 weeks on an emergency and came back to a heartbreaking view of tons of bermuda and other weeds coming through 20 bales of straw....what do I need to do now? Can I use the Preen now or do I need to rake all that pine straw out first?? I'm desparate for your knowledge on this!
W/ how hot it gets in Houston, TX, after I spray it would u recommend that I spread a medium size plastic bag on top of it so that the solution won't dry up soo fast?
I want to have a wildflower flower bed planted, but I am afraid that many of the wildflowers are actually considered to be weeds. I plan to till up the garden, but I don't want to plant the wildflowers only to have them die from the spraying. Will the Ortho product be best to use, and should it be used prior to planting the wildflowers? Does this product remain in the soil very long and is that a problem in using it for wildflower gardens? Also, it Sedge Hammer a good product for this or not? Thanks.
Thank you for this video. Do you know how to kill oat grass or river oats? My neighbor planted it and it is all over! It spreads by seed and rhizome. It is very invasive!
BYD I have what I think is weeds in my vanity strip. It looks like grass but Idk what it is. You good at identifying weeds? I wanna take a picture tomorrow and send it to you on the gram
Very informative video; thank you! Hit Subscribe in the middle of the video. In an existing bed of creeping phlox with grass (fine, not Bermuda) trying to pop through, which would you suggest? Too late for prevention; it’s a full scale war at this point. We removed a third of the bed and replaced with new plants and are mulching heavily but the fine grasses keep popping out. Any suggestions from you or anyone else?
Ish i could use one of these on my invasive bishops weed and Chinese lantern that have smothered most of my good perennials totally in between these horrible invasive plants.
I've been trying not to use roundup because I have dogs who like to eat weeds and grass. But I have grass coming up in a bark area that I just paid to have landscaped. Can you recommend something for yards with dogs? Thank you.
pull the weeds by hand if you want to protect your dogs.Or buy white vinegar. DOn't believe what the manufacturers say. They are in the business to make money. Rest are all toxic. Some of the weeds he is spraying could have been easily pulled with the roots. Most people spray this stuff in the wind, It gets in the water, ocean etc. Bad, bad, bad for people and the environment.
Nothing wrong with that. That’s how I pull weeds. The growing season for weeds is after the cold until July hits. Or until the heat kicks in. Everything slows down, and plants decline on water and nutrient uptake. Flora subsides in growing. It’s too hot. So pulling weeds isn’t an all summer activity. It doesn’t hurt you and you get exercise too. Planting ground covers will discourage weeds as well.
You need to understand basic plant anatomy to grasp the difference in these chemicals. Grass or grassy weeds are different from weeds like henbit, etc. that have ‘broad leaves’. Bear with me….Grasses are called monocots , meaning that when the new sprout grows, it starts with one leaf, then the next leaf grows (skinny little things). Other plants other than monocots (grasses) grow with TWO leaves emerging at once….little broad leaves….they are called dicots (di meaning 2). The 2 different types - monocots and dicots….are different biologically so ‘grass killer’ does not work on the dicots and ‘broadleaf weed killer’ does not work on monocots. Some chemicals kill both so CHECK the label to see what it is licensed to kill. Geraniums and boxwood and almost all ornamental and edible plants are dicots so they will die, too, if you spray broadleaf weed killer! And be SURE to check if it is safe for your type of grass….some broadleaf weed killers may not be applied to St. Augustine, for instance. And check the application instructions carefully….the chemicals are designed to work and be safe only in a certain temperature range. That label is there to help you and is strictly regulated. Please read it in order to succeed and get the right product for your need.
Great info! Love how you used a little bit larger stones / rocks over your weed prevent tarped areas. Pays for itself in the long run and looks nice for a really long time. Doesn't sink down as easily or push tarp down. Doesn't blow away with blower. Doesn't float away with heavy rains or thunderstorms. So much easier to remove seasonal excess dead leaves and or after trimming the blushes. You can blow the dead or freshly cut leaves off the stones ... WITHOUT blowing away or scattering smaller stones. Some day ... hoping to have a yard that looks like that. Very nicely done and well maintained. Currently in the process of redoing everything the last homeowner did ... sigh ... If only I knew then what I know now (slowly discovered over time ... too much time). 😅
I've actually started using this recipe for the first time this year. I've never had so many weeds in the 24 yrs I've lived in my house. We had flooding rains this past winter that actually washed the neighbor's wood chip mulch from 3 houses up into our yard, so I think I also was gifted with more weed seeds too. I found this method to kill the tops only for some weeds and others permanently.
@@bpeters9466I too have more weeds than ever before in my front bushes. I hard pruned them in the winter, to bare branches, they were horribly overgrown. I'm experimenting to see if they come back. Well 6 months later the soil beneath them suddenly sprouted weeds. I found Natria on sale. It killed within hours. Now I'm trying to do inexpensive mulching, mixing potting soil and my cat's used pine litter. I'm experimenting.
@mettamorph4523 So far I haven't been able to find Natria in the local stores. I'm going to order online. I've been using the vinegar solution, but have so many weeds it's ridiculous. I think doing practically daily yard cleanup from the winds we had this year didn't help. I disturbed all my mulch trying to keep the yard clean. I'm a little worried about the cat urine in your litter mulch. It will be acidic. Animal urine can cause brown spots in grass and I know from experience from one of my cats constantly spraying one globe evergreen over and over, that it now has a big "hole" in the side of the greenery. Maybe a tiny bit of lime could counteract that. Not a yard guru, just don't want you losing anything. Idk, but it's already Hades hot outside, the weeds may win this year. Good luck in your yard. Happy gardening!
You should think about will weed killer be harmful to bees and birds in your lawn. This is why I don't use weed killer, I may be 70 and it gets harder to pull the weeds but I love the birds and bees more than my pain!!!!
@@BYDonBermudaGrassCentral it is because its harmful to them, learn to deal with the grass and weed natural, the bees are dying all around the world, and scientists believe it because of weed killer!!!
Nice video. I needed this. My second season in lawncare business. My first flowerbed project coming up. I'm alil neverous but I know practice make perfect
Natria, bonide captain Jack's dead weed brew and lawn weed brew are the only things I use. I don't want the harsh chemicals in my garden. Hand pulling is tedious and painful on the body but I just can't contaminate my space with that other stuff😢
Byd do you have any recommendations for preventing weeds in citrus garden? I have several orange, lime, lemon, and kumquat trees both old and young and I don’t want to hurt them.
Thank you, Michael, for showing exactly how to use the products and how efficiently they work. Hopefully, we will all use them as cautiously as you so as to protect the environment while ridding our lawns and gardens of weeds!
These things don’t harm the plants and shrubs that you sprayed next to ? I’m afraid it will seep down into the soil and harm if not kill the shrubs and plants. Please clarify.
Thank you for the video. Of the various products that you used, is there one or more that will not harm the critters in the garden, like toad, frogs and earthworms?
What can I use that is safe for pets? That's my issue with my backyard where they stay alot. Can you recommend a product that possibly I can use that I spray, let it dry then is safe for them to be around?..tks...
Great video Michael, explained well and thoughtfully. But I have one question? I have a gravel driveway, not weed barrier underneath, Would Preen work on keeping the weeds and grasses from growing into the stones? I have been using salted water with vinegar and dish soap but its isn't as effective as I would like. It is a long narrow driveway so it needs to have a efficient dispersal method. Thank you have a great day.
I will not spray that crap on my lawn. I will not spray that crap on my flowers. I will not spray that crap anywhere near my property. If it runs off into my creek, it can kill everything.
So Australians that book Princess cruises for an overseas cruise will be penalised because we can't even get medallions posted to us here....NOT happy about that!!
Hey thanks for your video. I have property that was my dad’s and his yard wasn’t cared for in the last years like it should have been. I have some boxwoods that have small trees coming up in them. How can I get rid of these without hurting the boxwoods? Thanks
I have great results with natria. I buy the gallon and put in my sprayer to kill larger areas. We have pets so I try to use the least toxic product for the job possible
