Thanks so much for the tutorial, I'm new to knitting and my hat still turned out awesome!! I used 6mm bamboo needles with yarn that gave me the recommended gauge (11 sts = 4 inches/10 cm in stockinette stitch) I also made a larger hat that turned out great for anyone who wanted a hat with a larger circumference! For a circumference that is around 2" larger, I added 5 stitches to all the steps --> (so increase/decrease by an increment of 5 stitches if you want a larger/smaller circumference and still stick to the tutorial steps/ratio) * casting on = 54 stitches * increase row = 55 stitches * decrease rows = 44 > 33 > 22 > 11 stitches at the end This will most likely get buried in the comments, but hopefully it helps!
You have the most amazing way of explaining and showing how to do the stitches, not only showing how they go but what the instruction means eg k2 together etc. A lot of people assume we know how to do these but you don't. You also give us clear views of what you're talking about. Love your tutorials.
Davina!!!!! Girl, I have sad news...I can't knit or crochet anymore because of the increased pain in my shoulders, hands and fingers. 😪😥I'm 55 and I guess my body is saying, "that's enough!" I've been crocheting since I was 12 and knitting for the past 4 years. But, I'm going to keep following you and enjoy watching you to knit for me and your hat is so cute! LOL! Hugs girly from this old lady! LOL hee hee
Hi Kim, I'm so sorry to hear that you can't knit or crochet anymore. That is so sad. Please take care of yourself, and listen to your body. Thank you so much for your kind words and support for my channel! I hope you'll be able to pick up your needles and knit and crochet pain-free some day. *Hugs to you* ❤️❤️❤️
@@sheepandstitch Thank you lady D.! This chickie won't be beat tho, I'm a crafter at heart so I started making greeting cards cause that's less taxing on my hands and it's fun. The last thing I knitted was the cable scarf I was telling you about, but I couldn't finish it cause of the pain, however it was just the right size for my teddy bear so he wears it now! hee heee LOL! It did turn out beautiful though. So no worries, I'll be crafting for as long as possible! You keep up the good work my dear, you have a forever fan in me! I'll always be cheering you on! HUGS to you too!
Kim L. McDougal That's great to hear that you've still go a creative outlet! Making cards and scrapbooking sounds like an excellent way to get creative! I love your positive spirit! Keep on going, lovely! 💪
Don't give it up just like that. Take some time off and your body will recover. 55 is YOUNG! Try to do some stretching and some exercise to build up some of the supporting muscles -- like not at the gym but just get some resistance stretchy bands and loop it over the bed post and do a few shoulder pulls every night before bed and every morning when you wake up. Hands (and feet) are a bit tougher because all the muscles are up in the arm, and it's 99% tendons & bones in the hand/fingers. You might want to look into a TENS unit (they are reasonable price online ... the Balego TENS 7000 is the basic no-frills, no-scam standard ant goes for $20-30). Get some smaller electrodes for your hand joints and start slow -- take the time to read the instructions and find good videos from physiologists you trust online (I'm not a physiologist... just another person who had posture / "middle age" getting soft issues and work to get over it as much as I can). If TENS isn't for you, also look things that will increase your circulation -- your body's way of healing. Diet. Keeping warm (my grandma used to crochet with fingerless gloves on... her hands had so much arthritis they looked like someone ran them over with a truck... but she was 90+ so who can complain). And also important... don't marathon knit (I'm guilty of this). Get up and move/stretch every 10-15 minutes. It makes a big difference how you feel when you finally put the work down at try to do someothing else. Good Luck!
Great to see your videos back again. I decided to learn to knit out of the blue, without any family members who could teach me, and you are the very best teacher.
@@sheepandstitch What size circumference head does this fit on (in cm)? I'm trying to work out whether I'd need to go bigger or not... 🤔 Please help. 🙏 P.s. I love your videos, you're incredible. 🖤
For some random reason yesterday, I decided to learn how to knit and I had no one to teach me so when I found your channel I was so happy. I completed my first scarf thanks to you and now I am making a beanie to match with it.💜
Love watching your tutorials Davina, they so detailed and interesting. I’m 74 and been knitting for many years but you’ve really given some great ideas too. Thank you! Pam from Cape Town, South Africa
This was my first knitting project and it came out amazing!!! I’ve been knitting for the past 6 months or so, but wanted to make something I could actually wear/use. Thank you so much for this great tutorial, it was very thorough!
Very good instructions. I'm getting back into knitting after several decades, yes.. decades.. I appreciate the highlighting of certain parts in the video, makes all the difference.
Used this to make my first ever knitting project...now have friends placing orders! Was easy to follow and produced something that is actually wearable, thank you 😃
Thank you for helping me knit my way through quarantine! I have picked up kitting and you are the only person who has been such a patient and articulate teacher. I can't thank you enough (:
@@auburnowens2841 I have been knitting beanies in the round. I really love super simple stuff so I found a video for the “Maple Beanie” and I have been making tons of those for people for Christmas! What about you?
Hello. Would you mind sharing how you cater for different head sizes, suppose if you wanted to make one for a toddler? Are there are specific number of stitches for particular head sizes?
@@manuela. you’d just do fewer stitches going around and lessen the number of rows you knit, but it’s hard to say exactly how many fewer stitches/rows. Lots of patterns provide guidance for different sizes. I’d check out Ravelry for free hat patterns. There are lots of easy ones and usually provide instructions for kids or baby sized hats.
Thanks so much I'm going on an exchange with my school to a cold country and I thought it was a good opportunity to knit a hat. At first I was a little intimidated since I'm still a beginner knitter but you explain everything really clearly and now I'm all set for my holiday.
You are born to teach which shows in your tutorials. Your mindset attitude and passion for this craft is a joy to follow. So glad I found you and already hooked to your wonderful tutorials💯👌
I just want to say I'm so glad I discovered your channel! Super detailed, really easy to follow and timestamps with links to other tutorials helps! Your so great at teaching and not many people know but it's really hard to teach someone when it feels like second nature to you. Keep up the good work!
I have been wat hung sop many turmtorials & you are really great at teaching! I love my 1st hat! I now know how to recognize knit from pearl stitch- finally-thanks to your directions!
Thank You So Much for this great tutorial, I was able to make a perfect hat for my two year old niece and believe it or not, it was my first ever knitting project. All thanks to you Davina, I learnt how to knit by watching your 'How to Knit' and now I am actually done making my first cap. Oh, I'm so excited to make more!!
I finished my first ever knit project thanks to this video!!!! I was taught when I was young by my Gran, but never finished anything.... I started to knit again 2 years ago.... still never finish anything.... I FINALLY FINISHED A PROJECT!!!! I knit this hat!!!! Thank You. ♥️🧶
What an awesome tutorial. My hat was ready in just 1 day. Even though I had no experince besides knitting regular nonsense rectangles, I did an awesome hat thanks to your guidance. Whenever I was unsure about which stitch I was at or how to proceed, I used your tips and solved all the issues. The only downside was my head being a bit smaller. But it looks chunky and cozy just the way I wanted. Made me really enthusiastic about knitting again. Thank you so much for all the effort you put and the guidance you provide 🤍
Did you use the same size needles (10mm size us 15), and a size 6 super bulky yarn? I also know I tend to knit in a different tension so my products are sometimes off since I don't always check my gauge in advance... maybe check after some rounds that you're measuring the same as she is. (I need to start doing that myself at least) 😅
This is hands the best tutorial on RU-vid for beginner level hat, love it, just finished knitting my very first hat, can’t wait to wear and show it off 😊
Excellent video! I never learned more than knit stitch, purl stitch, cast on and cast off. I only watched this video because I was curious to know how you’d create more shape than a rectangle lol. It’s a lot simpler than I imagined! A good intro to increase/decrease stitches and of knitting patterns 👍
Thank you ma'am. You’ve shown the steps with every detail possible and your instructions were so easy to follow. I've just finished my first hat. It took just a week and turned out perfectly! Thanks again.
My little girl needed a new toque, and thanks to this tutorial, she has one now! This was my very first knitting project too and can’t recommend this enough. Would love to see the different ways to make this bigger/smaller though!
I am SO so happy I found this channel. I’ve looked at so many tutorials of how to learn knitting and I just didn’t understand them. But you are straightforward, with a PERFECT camera angle, and you explain things thoghrouly. Exactly as I need them. Thank you SO much!!!
Just came across your channel and absolutely love it. I've been an enthusiastic crocheter for a while now but wanted to get my hands on knitting too. Your videos make me want to go the store to buy all the items I need RIGHT AWAY! Thanks so much.
The best knitting tutorials on the internet! I'm on my third hat already, all thanks to you Davina. I learnt how to do the long-tail cast on, the stockinette stitch and increasing and dropping stitches from your videos. You are a great teacher and I'm so glad I found your channel. Thank you!
Thank you. Have fallen in love with knitting/started learning it once I started watching your videos and tutorials. It’s fantastic. The details and the way you tell things has helped me identified things in a thorough way. So kind of like establishing strong basics for stronger skills. Awesome. Almost started and reached near completion of the hat and You have so many wonderful pointers that makes watching till the very end fun and worthy!👏👏
Thank you. The 1st thing I've ever knitted (apart from a baggy eleven Inc scarf with holes in it. Which was quickly unravelled ) I'm very proud of my hat. 3/4 cream+ + the top 1/3 is grey with a grey pom pom. Now for the wooly wrap scarf to match.!! Thanks again!🙋🏻♀️
So... I'm planning to knit everyone in my extended family something for Christmas and I saw this video, saw the jazzed up hats, and I was like, you know what? I am going to knit this hat for my cousins!!
Thank you SO much! This video helped me finally piece together how to read a knitting pattern and identify some key stitches and tips and tricks that I was struggling to figure out on my own. And now I can make presents that don’t take as much time as a scarf but are still lovely.
I just started knitting a scarf and I can't wait to knit a matching hat to go with it. Your tutorials are the best. Thank you so much for the great work you do for us.❤️
Such an amazing tutorial. I've been knitting for 2 weeks now and before following any detailed tutorial I wanted to make sure I can knit, purl etc - you've explained everything sooo well, especially the instructions + increasing/decreasing a yarn. I've spent whole afternoon working and managed to finish a beautiful beanie I'll gift my friend with 🥰 he lives on a boat and now he'll have something cozy to keep his bald head off 😂 thank you so much, looking forward to making other projects with you! All the love 😊💙🙏💙🙏💙
This was my first thing I knitted that wasnt a square or rectangle. It was so easy to follow and now I have a hat! I used thinner wool and thinner needles so I have a mini hat. Perfect for a baby
Very easy to follow instructions. I managed to knit the hat within the day. I didn't have the same size knitting needle and yarn on hand but managed to make the hat with smaller size knitting needle and two type of colour yarn. It's so awesome learning a new hobby from your video.
Your videos are the BEST I have ever seen on u tube. The most well Thought-out video I have never watched. Perfect amount of time, rt to the point with some charm, so easy to see examples of your stitches, very clear instructions, made video go faster in parts that were repetitive, u must be a teacher? Well done!!
Than you for sharing this hat pattern and showing us step by step how it is made. I will make my son's new hat's for Christmas. Take Care and stay warm this winter. 🎄
WOW!!! Thank you so much!!! I am a super beginner and decided to learn to knit to keep my hands and brain busy! I found your channel and it is PERFECT for beginners! Your voice is soothing and conversational and your explanations have taught me what I am looking at and given me an understanding rather than just going through the motions!! I loved this tutorial because it walks through reading a written pattern as well - which I needed!!! I get jammed up on what portions to repeat. (I'm constantly interrupted to I write out the line instruction so I can put down and pick up without skipping a stitch!) And reading through with you really helped to keep my place as I went! Two days ago I just had the urge to make a hat! I spent way too much time looking for a pattern. I really needed your guidance and I'm thrilled you did this!THANK YOU!!!!!
Thank you for an amazing tutorial. I've been teaching a bunch of girls at the school where I work how to knit and one of them wanted to naje a beanie, after checking out a few videos I was getting disheartened but I came across your video a voila I have made my first beanie. Now I feel confident enough to teach the girls.
Oh! That's so wonderful! I love this comment so much! Good luck teaching your girls! Let me know if you have any questions. This is another similar hat pattern that is knit in the round (so, no seaming). It does require an extra set of double pointed needles though, but in case you want another option, here it is: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-23gmF0WFXdI.html Best of luck to you and your students!! They are also welcome to tag me on instagram @sheepandstitch if they have questions or if they want to share their hats!
Thank you so much for this. I KNIT A HAT Y'ALL!!!!!! This tutorial is amazing, and I learned so much. I have been knitting for over a year now, and I learned how to do things way better than I've been doing them. I have never been able to seam anything nicely, and I am still impressed with how great of a job I did with this hat. Thanks to this video. A great job explaining everything, I didn't have any problems, questions, complaints, or concerns. Everything was detailed and well explained. My hat came out so great, and all of my family and friends are very impressed. I posted a picture of my finished hat on Instagram, and I tagged you in it. Thank you again so much for this.
I have tried to find someone on RU-vid that is a superior teacher, and alas, I’ve FOUND YOU!!! I’ve watched 3 videos and everything you e shown, looks amazingly easy to do!!! I took a class at Jo-Ann’s to make a stocking cap similar to this, and it’s still waiting to be finished almost TWO yrs later! I’m going to purchase a couple of patterns to start with from your website as soon as I finish this comment!! Again thank you, you are an amazing teacher!!
Hi maam I am an 12 yr old boy and I thought it would be very difficult ad I am a total beginner. But ur vid was so encouraging and easy that it forced me to try it. I followed every step nicely and It turned out awesome. Thanks for this tutorial. My parents are very impressed. Thank you
Thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial explaining in detail every step , how to knit a hat. This is the first time I am knitting a hat. You are an exceptional teacher. I cannot tell you how happy I was when it was done. Till now I had not a clue how to go about it, but was dying to knit a hat. And today joy of joys I did it. Look forward to viewing more of your knitting videos.❤
I had a couple of leftover balls of yarn from my scarf and since I'm on Covid-19 lockdown I decided that I wanted to make myself a hat. I found your video yesterday afternoon and I finished my hat earlier today! The tutorial was really easy to follow along and the result is great. My seam is a bit wonky but since the hat is black it's not really noticeable.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I used it to make my first hat and it came out great! You are such a great teacher. Can’t wait for more tutorials in the future ☺️ thank you for helping me discover my love of knitting!
Hello sage, I know I'm like 2 years late and you most likely forgot about this comment, but it's completely fine if you use less chunky yarn, HOWEVER it will turn out smaller, depending on how chunky your yarn is
i never thought i'd be able to knit something like a hat before finding this video. i've made two so far (the first one was a bit too small for my head so i made adjustments) and i'm so excited to try the color-blocking version! thank you so much for this video, it's brought me so much joy!
You make the best tutorials out there! I've always been frustrated with knitting and done nothing more than a square but since watching your video I have a proper hat!! Thanks so much 😁😁😁
Oh my god thank you soo much for this tutorial..its so easy and im so happy to find this video of yours ,im really a beginner in knitting and this tutorial is very easy for me.Thank youu ❤
Hi, Thank you for this tutorial! im so happy to find a beginners hat tutorial that only uses 2 needles! =) I want to make this for my kids, can i just decrease the number of cast on stitches to make it smaller? thanks
You are an absolutely wonderful teacher. Your video left no room for confusion because your directions are so clear! I can’t wait to knit this hat! Thank you so much!!!
I've knit my first hat with this tutorial, thank you! For my next one I want to do colour blocking, when I change the colour of the yarn do I change it on the knit or purl side? Sorry if it's a simple question, I just don't want to get it wrong 😅
Thank you so so much dear. Because of Covid I discovered kitting!. So delighted to have found you after failing to follow other tutorials, yours was clean, clear, organised, able to convey information logically and I’m following you to knit a hat ( the 1st thing I ever knit after 1 straight forward long scarf.). I love the step by step explanations, and your logical thinking. I’m left handed and would love to follow you step by step to make a Cardigan .... please. Big hug and stay safe and happy 🌷
Thank you so much, my grandmother taught me how to crochet but never got to teach me how to knitt. My family and I were packing up my grandparents house and my aunt gave me my grandmas needles and yarn and even some unfinished work. I have never been able to make anything that didn't look like a child made it *im 33* you made that possible for me. Im a visual learner and you are so patient, and explain everything so perfectly. I love you, I will always follow your videos :)
You are fantastic!!!! I just knit my first hat ever! I finally understood how to purl, i just couldn’t seem to get it but your explanations are next level! Thank you so so much
Oh boy am I happy! Just finished my first hat with your tutorial!! Your directions are so good and you speak so clear it makes it a pleasure to rewind, rewind, and more rewind until I get it! Thank you so very much for your video
Davina, your videos are so helpful ! I am teaching myself how to knit and have already made 2 scarves and 2 of these hats since the end of July bc of your content! Thank you so much for all your time you put into your videos and blog!!
Thank you so much for this video! I just finished my hat, and while it looks fantastic, it is really small. It can't even fit my 10 year old comfortably, and our heads are normal sized. :) I used your same yarn down to the brand and type. Do you know where my error was? Did I pull the stitches too tight? Otherwise it is so fantastic. I would love to make more, but larger this time.
You should make sure you used the correct sized needles, and then look into how to do a swatch. If you used the exact same size needles and same brand and weight of yarn, you might be knitting really tight? But to be honest if it turned out that small, it could’ve been the yard weight or needle gauge.
I finally found the best knitting class! You are the best teacher! The video is crispy clear, with camera panning on the stitches which is super helpful for a beginner. Thanks a lot!
Such a great video and so clear. I’ve now made this twice and I learnt a lot from both times making it. A few weeks ago I had never held a ball of yarn before and NOW I CAN MAKE A HAT!!! Can’t wait to try my next project. Maybe I’ll make that sweater one day after all...
If i were to use non-chunky yarn that calls for 4mm straight needles, how many stitches do i cast on? I'm assuming it won't be 49. It's am adult sized hat. Please let me know. Thanks!
This took me days & multiple restarts to get correct but man oh man, thank you!! First hat ever! From someone who’s pretty much a total newbie 😊 such a wonderful & informative video. You’re a wonderful virtual teacher.
The color of the yarn is really special, but the most special of all is how you explain things :) i don't live in 4 seasons country, so i knit very seldom, your video is a great refreshing course for me, i really am thankful & amazed!
@@pinkishhaven5158 you gotta use a bulkier yarn. I did it as was instructed here and made a beanie but its a bit tight for my fat head lol Mathematically would make sense to do 55 stitches from the beginning, skip adding the additional stitch when stockinette, and do the decreasing as in here. You'll end with 11 stitches instead of 10. for every 5 stitches you add 1 at the final decrease. The first cast on stitches for it to work in that pattern must always be an odd number.
THANK YOU for this video! I've been working on a similar pattern and was doing great until it told me to seam it up, with no further explanation. I've had to undo my seam work so many times.
Thank you so much!! I made my first hat and i feel so empowered ! I cant wait to make them for my family for christmas 🤗sheep and stitch has literally taught me so much! Thank you so much for making these videos 🥰
Novice crocheter here. I found a yarn that I REALLY want to make into a cable knit beanie and so I figured I should learn some basic hat-making skills. I feel like I learned so much from your video and I’m anxious to start a similar hat with some stash yarn. Thank you for the detailed video!! 🤗
