How to Knit: a LACY SCALLOP BIND-OFF | Easy Knitting Pattern for a Pretty Scalloped Edging

This simple tutorial demonstrates how to knit a shell scallop edge whilst binding off. The pattern requires you to cast on (using a backwards loop cast on) in the middle of a row, and then bind off all of these extra stitches on the following row. It is this quick & drastic reduction in stitch number that creates the wavy edge :)
I hope you enjoy this video!

Thank you so much for this tutorial! Going to try it out on a baby tunic I'm knitting because the original pattern just has a plain cast off border, which is boring.

I enjoyed your tutorial and ended up using this lovely edge stitch in a shawl pattern designed for our yarn shop in Florida. I wondered if I could have your approval to link this video within the pattern instructions. Thank you so much!

Very easy. Seems easy to make the scallops bigger...I assume I found just cast off more between scallops and cast on more backwards loops as long as it's an odd number

Sorry for the late reply, but yes you can quite easily alter the pattern by doing more cast on stitches - which as you said needs to be an odd number - and more knit stitches & bind offs if you want to add a bit more stability. Just make sure you start with a number of stitches that will work for the pattern :)

If I'm knitting in the round, should I Bind off the final row purl wise? I'd prefer it lay flat like your example. Thank you!

This is so pretty! I have 71 stitches so how many stitches would I bind off and how many would I add on?
@RokoleeDIY
@RokoleeDIY Год назад
Hi! You need to get to a multiple of 3 stitches, plus 1. So you can either increase to 73 stitches or decrease to 70 stitches :)

can you make this at the beginning of your work and match it at the end both? ends?

Sorry for the late reply! Unfortunately you can't do this same method for cast on and bind off. This would be the closest method I have for a cast on: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sgLECPL7bvE.html However, you could work around that by making a short piece of knitting with this bind off, then sewing it onto the beginning of your knitting. So you'd be basically sewing a bound off edge onto your starting edge. Hope that helps!

What if I already knit 100 stitches, do I still have to cast on extra 7 stitches for each scallop wave? I am trying to bind off my kneck warmer soon and I wanna do this.

Sorry for the late reply. Yes you would follow the video exactly as it is. You'll end up with a fair few more stitches on your needles so make sure you are using circular needles with a long enough cable :)

@@RokoleeDIY I just finished my first neck warmer and I end it with this pattern, it turns out with many hole but I don't know why, but it is beautiful and looks like a lace haha.

can you make this in the round?
@RokoleeDIY
@RokoleeDIY Год назад
Yes, I think it should work if you make sure you have a multiple of 3 stitches then repeat *cast on 7 stitches & slip those 7 sts (as shown in the video), then (k1, bind off 1)x3 Then on the next row bind all of those sts off. :)

Are all the rest of the rows a repeat of row 1?
@RokoleeDIY
@RokoleeDIY Год назад
Hi! No row 1 is just followed once, then you bind off on the next row - I just use the knit bind off method for this :)
