In this video, I’ll show you how to knit a market bag. This bag is cute and practical. It’s great for toting around groceries, gym gear, beach wear and more. It’s, lightweight, eco-friendly and a fun knit!
The market bag is knit flat and then joined in the round to create the sides and top handles. It’s a unique construction that’s incredibly satisfying when it comes together.
This bag pattern is appropriate for those who are comfortable casting on, knitting, purling, casting off and knitting in the round. This is a medium difficulty project. It’s recommended to both adventurous beginners and seasoned knitters.
Please note: The price of the PDF pattern will fluctuate with time to keep up with inflation and the average price of a cup of coffee.

I'm only a beginner, the most I've made is a few dish towels and a scarf, but the way you teach is good for EVERYONE! You're not condescending to newer knitters, but you don't rush through and make it feel like an expert pattern. Thank you for being a great teacher!

Phew this was a challenge for me. Halfway through I vowed never to make another, but then all of a sudden something just clicked. I had to listen to your video many times, but you always had a tip for me to figure it out. Thank you! I just started my second, and my quality is 100 times better. Now if I can just finish a few for Christmas presents.

Thank you so much for this video.it is beyond excellent! I started knitting mid July. My grandson knits and inspired me to try. From watching RU-vid videos, I learned to co, knit and pearl. I made a couple of dish cloths, a scarf and knitted two in the round pumpkins, then this video popped up on RU-vid. I watched it several times. Every detail was explained so clearly and I decided to jump in. It has been slow going, but now I can ‘see’ the stitches and after the first few repeats of rows 1-4 am well on my way. Things I did to help as a beginning knitter: 1. I started by clipping a stitch marker to the right side of my work. This has really helped to keep me straight as I learned the repeat. 2. Initially, after knitting Rows 1 and 3, I would look over each stitch. 3. I found it easy to forget to YO. Had to pay close attention. 4. As stated in the video, I also needed to look over the stitches. Sometimes they crossed or stuck together and I would accidentally work two as one, hence decreasing the row incorrectly. 5. Take your time!. Stop and start. Don’t stress. Don’t give up you other newbies!! Start slowly and you will soon see the stitches and become comfortable and start to pick up a little speed. I cannot say enough good things about this video, from her pleasantness, to her details, and to her showing where we might run into trouble (oh yes!). The bag is beautiful and so useful. Can’t wait to make another. Having several of these is not too much and what a great gift! If you think you can’t, you can!! Go for it. I might even call myself a knitter now. Thank you, thank you for this excellent video.

I was having a really rough day and seeing this immediately brightened it a bit! My grandmother always had a market bag with her which she'd apparently had for over 20 years since buying it in france. Every time i'd go grocery shopping with her she'd pull it out. Now I can make myself one🥰

I am new as well. I have been knitting on various looms, but I had never tried to use knitting needles. That is until I recently joined a yarn-lovers group at my local library and the ladies there gently challenged me to at least try using knitting needles. One of them even blessed me with a homemade leather pouch with pockets filled with various sizes and types of needles. She also gave me another one with crochet needles. Sooo...I was touched by their kindness and decided the least I could do is give it a whirl. Thankfully, I came across your channel because you make learning how to knit a lot less intimidating. 🙂I now know how to cast-on and do knit and purl stitches. Not sure if I'm skilled enough yet to make this lovely bag, but I will definitely save the pattern for future use. Thank you!

I really like knitting this bag. I've made a bunch in different sizes for the different kind of shopping i do. Love it so much better than the standard reusable bags. (No plastic bags in Canada anymore.) My favorite yarn is coboo from walmart (bamboo/cotton and cheap!) I would recommend the handles bind off looser, I like Grandmas favorite bind off (on youtube) I find the regular bind off has a hard seam that is kind of painful if there's heavy stuff in the bag. Thanks for this! I'm giving them out as christmas presents this year i think.

Ever since I was a beginner knitter, I watched Sheep&Stitch. I've literally grown to do sweaters, boots and gloves here. You're awesome and good at explaining the stitches. Too good, honestly. Love the bag, but don't have circular needles. Can I do it straight and seam up later?

Thank you so much for your kind words. You made my day! As for the bag, when picking up stitches to knit the handle you’ll need a circular needle. I can’t think of a good way to do it with straight needles unfortunately

If my end stitches are off on the lace stitch, should I start over? I keep ending up with 1 sts where I should have 2, and vice versa

To do the initial increases (M1-P), try using your left needle to grab the strand of yarn between the two stitches and place it in the correct orientation onto the left needle. I found this to be easier than using my right needle to perform this increase.

Hi! Love your tutorials! Could you guide me how to join the bag by picking up stitches but not make the handles.. i want to incorporate leather straps in this design. Would appreciate if you could guide me exactly at which point i should change the pattern and how. Thanks:)

Hi, I did the (increase row) 3 x and each time, i get 46 stitches. After the last M1, I had 2 stitches left, so I purl 1 and I purl the last stitch. So 46 stitches. What went wrong?

@@sheepandstitch I think i may try it with the smallest macrame cord for sturdiness. I have made bags before and with similar sticking and they do stretch more than you want if you aren't utilizing it has a shopping bag etc. Hopefully I can update you on how it comes out

i'm completely obsessed with this lace pattern !! thanks sm for sharing ❤️ how would it look if worked in the round? should i alternate kitting and purling rows for rows 2&4? thank U !!
@sheepandstitch
@sheepandstitch 4 месяца назад
The lace part should be knit flat because you’ll be picking up stitches on the sides, so the piece shouldn’t be knit in the round otherwise there won’t be any sides 🥲

I’m so looking forward to making this for my mom for Christmas! I’m a beginner knitter so I want to clarify - it says “6.5 mm flat needle” but it looks like a circular needle in the video. Could you clarify if it’s a regular straight needle or a circular needle? I can’t wait to follow along with your tutorial!! 😊
@sheepandstitch
@sheepandstitch 2 года назад
Oops! You’re right 🤦‍♀️ You’ll be knitting flat with the 6.5mm needle, so you can use straight needles, which is traditional. Or you can use circular needles but without joining in the round. You’d turn over the knitting at the end of a row as if you were knitting on straights. Circular needles are multi-purpose in that you can knit in the round *and* knit flat. Hope that makes sense! I should have explained that in the video. Thanks for pointing it out!

@@sheepandstitch this answered my question! I have 6.5 mm straights and was confused when I saw the circs in the video. Really looking forward to knitting this.

Hi there, just working my project now...I was just curious as to why the first end has 8 rows of garter, and the other end has 6?

hi, i have another question...i am now at the last leg and thought the garter stitch portion started with knit first, instead of purl...before i tink, i want to ask...if i left it starting with knit first...will that affect the bag? thanks again and appreciate you!

This looks amazing 😍 Can you explain why you knit 8 rows of garter stitch at the beginning and 6 rows at the end of the lace?
@sheepandstitch
@sheepandstitch 2 года назад
If I remember correctly, at the end of the lace, the decrease row creates a garter stitch ridge, which adds to the garter rows at the end of the lace. The result is 4 garter ridges, which matches up with the beginning garter rows. Hope that makes sense!

This is a lovely bag, i did have a question though, since you're working back and forth on the bag what is the difference between doing k2tog on the 1 row of the lace repeat vs doing ssk on the 3rd row?! Just curious since both are basically the same thing. I do love this bag though
@sheepandstitch
@sheepandstitch 2 года назад
The k2tog is a left-leaning decrease while the ssk is right-leaning, so when you alternate them between rows it has a distinct pattern. However you can also just k2tog or ssk instead of alternating between the two decreases. The pattern will work that way also. The lace will just look a bit different, but still pretty!

Love your videos!! Maybe this is a dumb question but the handle is knit with garter stitch. You purl one row and then knit the next row. I thought garter stitch is either knitting or purling all rows ??

Garter stitch in the round is alternating rounds of knits and purls!

Where I am there is a lot of 100% acrylic yarn. Do you think it would be ok, I think it might be as strong as cotton and is recycled. What are your thoughts.

Hi, thank you for the tutorial. The main part of the tutorial is clear and all makes sense to me but when it comes to picking up stitches along the bumps - I can't really tell from the video where do we insert our needle? I hear you say sticking our needle into the bump but I still don't know which hole we're aiming for...hope my question makes sense. If anyone can tell me what keyword I can search for regarding this on youtube, I would greatly appreciate it.
