On the yarn band, there is a suggested needle size. You can use this just as a guide. If you want to use that sized needle, I suggest you make a swatch and measure to see if you get the gauge that they mention. If not, then either go up or go down one size and swatch again. For scarves, I don’t usually worry about gauge. I just cast on the width I want and use the correct multiples that are mentioned in the pattern and then knit!
