Hi and welcome to our channel!
Who are we:
Scandinavians Arne Nerjordet and Carlos Zachrison are highly regarded designers, textile artists and authors. They are best known for their craft books and their original, colourful and visually striking designs. Hi from the US. Just started to teach myself how to knit, 8 years after this video. Couldn’t get the tension right so I started knitting Norwegian way because I couldn’t get the hang of knitting with the yarn extended above my fingers. Thank you for validating what I felt was wrong, or cheating. Now I will have to try Norwegian purling. This is terrific. Thank you! 😊

I recently taught myself to knit with the help of RU-vid, and your channel! I watched some of the newer videos too, but I really wanted to say: HOLY MOLY! Arne can knit so fast, it's very impressive. I like the way you explain the knitting and I have tried to hold the yarn several other ways, but this is by far the most smooth and comfortable. It's so nice to sit and knit with you. Thanks for making all these lovely videos.

Takk so much. I had a knitting class when I was in high school in the mid 1960s. I didn’t do very good on my knitting then. I had a hard time holding 2 needles and the yarn...so I went to crochet. But I really wanted to knit. Your instructions are so much easier for me than how I learned so many years ago.

That’s wonderful. I’ve been crocheting for 50 years and just started teaching myself to knit. I love it a lot slower then crocheting but a lot easier then crocheting. I knit apparently in the German continental style. So far I have made 32 hats and two scarfs. I’ve learned the knit, pearl, castoff and brioche stitch. I can cast on with the long tail cast on but love the German twisted cast on. It’s way easier and faster. I’m 61 years old and always learning. My grandma always said ididl hands are a sign of a troubled mind. 😉

I know how to knit.. and I have been knitting for a while but I love watching the ABC’s of basic knitting.. because it improves my style and in my skills. It never hurts to go back to the basics and also I share it with my friends who’ve never did it before I have a dear friend who I’ve worked with for years and now we’re retired and she only crochets but I sent her this thinking maybe she might want to try knitting..🧶 It’s December 31 and I do like myself in going into the new year with some pleasant video watches. Such a wonderful experience for me to be in Covid coziness and watch you from miles away I live in Santa Paula California🤶🏻

The Norwegian Purl was a bit more difficult; however, after a few days of practice, I finally have it. Now, I am working on maintaining a proper tension. Yay!!!

I was taught English throw. Norwegan knitting is so much easier than the continental, seeing eople with the finger stuck up in the air. Im glad I found your video as I would have made a big mistake seeing peole sticking the finger up. Love your analogy , when in an emergency pull the cord.

Thank you for showing us how to do the Norwegian purl....I'm just learning how to knit and I hold my yarn in my left hand because I am use to crocheting. Your method makes knitting and purling MUCH more comfortable on the hands! Enjoy your tutorials! Keep them up!!

I agree with you! Thank you so much Arne and Carlos! I'm glad that I learned both Continental and English method but I now choose Continental or Norwegian because it feels better in my fingers and wrist. I still use English when I cast off though.

I like this. Less movement. I like keeping the yarn on the finger. I want to avoid holding the finger in the air as I've seen with some styles. It' cramps my hand. I've been practicing it a bit along with other continental style knitting and I like this best. I'm not very fast at it yet, but love your instructions. I still have trouble understanding the slip at the beginning. I tried it but it doesn't turn out nice. Now I guess there's two different ways to do it, depending on what row you're on. I'll have to watch it and practice some more. Thanks so much for re posting this. It's my favorite tutorial.

My father was a knitter a rug maker sewing he was a clever man he knitted Fisher men's socks on 4 needles and never used a pattern a lot of crafts were not taught at school late 70 and onwards to c both of u gentlemen with ur skills is beautiful thank you for the gifts u keep posting Michelle UK

yeah, finally found someone who knits like I do..... every one I meet in the UK, once they get over the fact it's a man knitting ;) then cannot grasp how I cast on with one hand and how I hold the yarn to knit and how I purl... and now I know I do it the Norwegian way

dragonlord0666 lol loads of British men can knit, they’re just scared to tell anyone because of the sexist ridicule so nobody thinks men knit and they usually gave up to fit in. But when I proudly say my dad taught me, (if there’s nobody else to hear) they open up about learning as a child- equally proud.

I'm so glad you made this video! I saw Arne knitting in another video and was so confused by the way he makes a purl stitch. It's really helpful to have you demonstrate it slowly. I learned to knit in Norway as a teenager, but I have never seen this way of purling.

I love you guys. I am a continental knitter, but do it more like the German style. I was never really happy with my purl stitches. So I sat and watched this video and learned a new way. Can't thank you enough. I am now a better knitter.

Wonderful! I am a lifelong English knitter, but wrist and hand pain stopped me from knitting. Now that I am retired and don't have to work on a computer all day long, I can knit again but still the pain from knitting caused problems for me. I decided in 2019 I would learn Continental knitting. The knit stitch was an easy transition but the purl stitch was very slow and awkward. I did a purl stitch search of your videos and found this one. Miracle! So simple to do and now I am almost as fast purling the Norwegian way as I was the English way. Thank you so very much!

I have been knitting for about 50 years after being taught as a young child by my mother. I live in UK so was taught to knit as a 'thrower'. I have heard about a 'continental knitting' but never knew how it actually worked, only that it was meant to be a faster way of knitting. It certainly looks as though it will be and, thanks to this basics of knitting video, I am now going to have a go at your 'Norwegian style' when I start my next pair of socks, I will get plenty of practice with the knit stitch, since it is mainly knitted in the round. I will try to do the k2p2 rib in the 'Norwegian style' too to get a bit of practise with purl as well, which looks a little more complicated but still doable with your lovely slow-motion of how to do it. Now I have found you (through a FB page recommendation), I will have a look at some of your other videos as well - looks as though I have quite a few to choose from! Thank you for posting.

I promise you, I have tried years to learn how to knit in the continental style because it’s suppose to be so much faster. I could NEVER, ever get it where it felt comfortable, I had so much trouble with the yarn getting away, and with tension. A few time times watching your videos and I’ve accomplished the Norwegian method and it feels so comfortable and it is easy on the hands and wrists as far as fatigue. Arne and Carlos, you are wonderful teachers! Your channel is one of my favorites! I enjoy the knitting videos as well as the cultural ones. I want to come to one of your workshops one day! You guys are so sweet and kind and funny! I learn something with every video and I just enjoy every single video I watch! I hope you are doing well and happy and healthy! I am 73 now and crocheting since 18. Knitting was always secondary because of my loose purls. I love them now. The more I purl the better they are looking🥰

After years of traditional "throwing" style knitting, I have learned to knit the Norwegian style, or "continental". Knit stitches were so easy but purl stitches seemed, not difficult, but, not smooth and seemed to affect my tension because I would raise my index finger to hold the yarn and pull it back to wrap around the needle when purl stitching. A very different position for my hands and holding the yarn compared to knit rows. Your version of purling is a perfect match to my knit stitches and makes ribbing more enjoyable and less of a chore. I love your videos, especially your tutorials and traditional methods and designs. Please don't ever stop. You are wonderful mentors and a great inspiration. xxx

You just completely changed the way I knit! I've always felt so clumsy knitting the English way (way I was taught). But I watched this many times, pausing and rewinding and working it along with you. I can't tell you how much easier it is to knit a 1x1 rib with this technique! wow. And the cast-on technique worked much better for me. Thank you, thank you! I'm now working my first sweater for myself and I'm very excited. Already the rounds are going to much easier.

The book I learned from taught the ‘throw’ method but I couldn’t do it. I learned crochet first and throwing felt awkward, so I held it like a crochet hook. I didn’t know there was a German way, but that’s definitely what I do.

I just want to say thanks! Your instructions are so clear and the visuals so excellent that I was able to switch styles. I lived in Berlin for a year but never saw anyone knit like this. Mostly, like me, American throwing style. Right now I am in the awkward beginning phase which is weird as an experienced knitter but I already know this will make me super fast on the needles. In my local store, they carry needles with the mm sizes, so that's no problem XD I already crochet (for about four years), but recently my mother got me two books with knitting projects from Spain. They include abbreviation charts and small tips in the patterns themselves, but I wasn't really getting it. Your instructions were very clear and easy to follow, so thank you for this video. Okay, I'm having a bit of a (welcomed?!) challenge learning the Norwegian way, knitting right-handed Norwegian way as a left-hander. Wow! Seems easier to knit Norwegian left-handed, so I will just keep practicing, as it's nice to be able to go both directions 🙂

Hi Arne and Carlos. I just started knitting a year ago and I learnt everything from youtube channels. I am very new to your channel but I am very grateful that I found both of you! I used to dislike to purl, however after watching this video (many times) I am finally enjoying purling. Even when the pattern gives a choice to either purl or knit, I now rather purl 😉. I am not as fast as Arne but I do think I am ‘dancing’ the purls!!

Tip for holding the yarn. I start and it feels comfortable for a couple of stitches but than it starts to feel tight and I struggle to pick up the yarn.

Thank you so much for the purl tutorial! I learnt to knit in a "norvegianish" way (dealt the tension the way one does in crochet) and ended up coming up with a purling technique where I no longer throw with my right hand but with my left hand thumb instead. However, that is only an improvement when you purl many purls in a row but not when you do ribbing, since you still need to carry the yarn back and forth and that can only be achieved with the intervention of the right hand. I love the norvegian purl because the yarn stays on the left hand all the time and the yarn, in a way, always stays in the back. I love your channel!

Thanks for the clear and relaxed instruction. I am an English style knitter and have knitted Fair Isle in the round with reasonable success, watching you knitting in the Norwegian style demonstrates such an economy of movement that delights. Which makes me wonder, why, when knitting colour work with yarns held in each hand, do you not hold the yarn in the right hand the same way as you do in the left?

I searched this out because I watched Carlos more recent purl cha cha cha method and even though I have been knitting continental over 50 years I could not follow it, seems very unfluid. This is a bit clearer but still I prefer my new streamlined continental purl but the way I do it does require the following knit row to be done thru the back stitch which sometimes complicates things. Still learning and certainly enjoying you two and your great interpersonal spirit. Blessings!.

I will watch this many times to get it right. My intention is to teach my Granddaughter Ursula to knit the Norwegian way. She lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The family on her Father's side live in Fargo but came from Poland, Great-Grandpa from Norway, and Great-Grandma is French. She is 96 and still living. My family is Irish and Welsh origin. I have a great interest in functional arts and crafts.

I'm a beginner knitter and I knit the German way. I'm going to learn the Norwegian way because that's a smoother move. I have a challenging time with tension, but I hope practice would help. Thanks for the tutorial.
