How to Knit Cables For Beginners 

FINALLY! Someone who explains things without taking a half hour before they touch their needles. Simple and to the point.

Just started 1 week ago on knitting and this cable made me look like a had. 4 years experience

I’ve been avoiding these for ages because I’d thought that each row will have something complicated to do, I had no idea it was just swapping 3 stitches every 4 rows. This was a super-clear tutorial, thank you!

thank you so much. i don't get why people cant do it as simple as you, you did it under 3 minutes, showed us the main part, and explained the rest of the layout at the end in text. the only decent tutorial out there for cable knits. everyone else's was actual shit, either they said nothing, or said so much i fell asleep halfway through

Nice explanation. short sweet and to the point. I'm an experienced knitter who has done cable before but the last time was awhile back and I just needed a little refresher on how to work the reverse side. Within a minute I had my answer thanks to putting the directions for knitting the rows written at the top of the video.

I spent two years so scared to try cables because I thought it would be crazy difficult. I did straight needles, different types of stitches, round needles, DPNs, hats, mittens, scarves, but I avoided this like the plague. Lol feel kinda silly now it's not as hard or crazy as I thought it'd be

Just want to write this out for my own sake. Not criticizing this video, it has definitely helped me, and I'm hoping this post maybe helps somebody with a mind which thinks procedurally similar to mine. If not, it has still helped me, so... Reasons I watched this video a bunch and wanted to write this out: I understood the basic concept of cabling but couldn't figure out where my yarn was supposed to be when slipping stitches and when switching from knitting/purling the cable stitches in the wrong order to knitting/purling the cable stitches on the cable needle. As in - I have enough knowledge to understand that a yarn-over is implied any time we're switching from knitting to purling, but couldn't visualize where the yarn needs to be with pretty much anything involving the stitches slipped onto the cable needle. I've tried a few different sort of "cabling for beginners" written and photo instructions, but the instructions I've found seem to entirely leave out steps like "wyif/wyib" in relation to all three needles. I'm also still trying to figure out how the tension both between stitches and between/around the cables works. Yarn (over) behind the right needle and cable needle but in front of the left needle before slipping stitches purl-wise (1:12), also it seems like we're stretching the area between the needles here before slipping the stitches in order to create some slack (1:15) ; yarn over from the RIGHT side of the cable needle/stitches to between the cable needle and right needle before purling stitches out of order (so yarn is in front of cable needle but behind both left and right needles) (1:40) , also seems like we're maintaining slack between the beginning of the row and the slipped stitches but not as much slack between the beginning of the row and the out-of-order stitches (I imagine this is because the space created by the slipped stitches is what creates the necessary slack) ; leave yarn between left and right needles and in front of the cable needle when knitting the cable stitches (1:55), maybe stretching the area between the cables and the end of the row just a little; yarn over to front like normal for the rest of the row (2:50) .

I know the basic technique enough to follow a pattern, but I wanted to add a simple cable going up the back of a the mountain capelet from Purl Soho. Thank you for the great tutorial! I feel confident I can do it by myself now without it being in the pattern!

I am a beginner at knitting thank you so much for your beautiful work I can’t wait to get started. However, could you please tell me what the multipliers are. I counted your number of stitches and it is 14 stitches so if I want it wider do I need a 14 stitch repeat? You are doing a very good job I know if I follow you step by step I will be able to do it. I tried this from another video and I havent got a clue what went wrong, but not the base of my knitting has a very pretty but unintended pleat in it, and it's cute but it certainly didn't cable haha!! Could it be because I attempt4ed to do too big a cable? 30 stitches (15 and 15)?

Hello, I am fairly new to knitting and I have a silly question. After finishing the front side of the work when you turn to the back side, do you just knit the knits and purl the purl's on the back side? Totally not sure what to do on the back side at all. Thank you.
