Hello, Norman....just discovered you today....nice to meet you! Thank you for mentioning the tendency of this fabric to draw in and become narrow and the need to cast on extra stitches. Yours is the only video on double stockinette that talks about this...I don't know why. Thanks for this great instructional video. I will be watching more from Nimble Needles.

Thank you, again, Norman! I saw this stitch on another site, but could not understand it. I kept getting double garter stitch -not what i wanted! So instead of getting frustrated (I do like to think I’m smarter than yarn), I thought, what would Norman say? An here it is, perfectly explained, including the reason behind the movement back to front. Now I have it in stockinette 🤗 You must have born to teach knitting techniques, you are such an excellent teacher;))

One question though: I want to knit this kind as a long tibe to wear as pulse warmers - do you think cast on/off edges will stay where they are or will the migrate all over the place with takibg the warmers on and off, since the knitting is basically just connected at the ends and not throughout the middle? (I hope this wasn't too confusingly phrased.)

Hey Margherita. Increasing double stockinette stitch is rather complicated. You have to do two increase next to each other. After a knit stitch, you have to increase a purl stitch from the wrong side and then turn around to M1R into the strand between two knit stitches. Probably makes no sense without a video.

I want to make a scarf with a mosaic pattern but want it to be reversible - that is, I want the floats to be hidden. I saw a scraps blanket pattern made in the round, with slipped stitches at both ends to make folds (like a smashed tube). Because it is knit in the round, there is no need to weave in ends, they are hidden in the “tube”. I was wondering if something like this could be done with mosaic knitting, in order to hide the floats, and make a scarf reversible. Does this make sense? Is there a better way to do this? i've been working on a scarf with thin stripes in this stitch and haven't had any problems but now i've notive that the edge where i switch yarn seems to be opening... I'm too far in to unwind it all so i'll probably sew the edge together at the end but i wonder if it's the way i'm tucking in the leftover yarn strings? i just knot them and pull them into the pocket the double fabric makes, there's nothing unwinding but the edge is just open in sections and i can't figure out how it's happening
@NimbleNeedles
@NimbleNeedles 2 года назад
probably, to be quite blunt, because you are not following the instructions to a word. It's easy to mess up, mind you, and sometimes you will bring the yarn to the back when it should be in front..but that's probably what is going on.

@@NimbleNeedles Well, I'm not following any pattern save my own colour scheme but I think I've figured out what's going on... Hey there, does anyone have experience with using this double stockinette stitch with heels and soles in Socks? Good video anyhow :)
@NimbleNeedles
@NimbleNeedles 5 месяцев назад
not me, at least. I did double knit socks, tho and so it definitely can work. not sure if you just do it for the heel

Me again, can someone tell me what this pattern is called in German? Would be very helpfull, to find a video where it is explained in german for a friend. She doesn't speak english. Thanks.

I really can't tell you. typically, double knitting is called "Double Face" in German (yeah...makes little sense I know :p). But I am not really aware of this particular stitch having its own name here in Germany. You might call it "Doppelt glatt rechts" but that's far from a household kind of name.

@@NimbleNeedles ok, but thanks. I thought it might be something like doppelt glatt patent or something but it isn't.
@NimbleNeedles
@NimbleNeedles 2 года назад
@@redzora80 no...though it speaks for you that you realize that double-knitting and brioche/patent are extremely closely related (or rather the same thing). But that's actually uncommon knitting knowledge and most books will tell you it's something totally different. I did find a couple of entries for doppelt glatt rechts. But this might just be a translation of the English term, as double knitting has a very short history in Germany (probably less than 30 years).

Is there a way to keep the sides connected? I don’t want a pocket
@NimbleNeedles
@NimbleNeedles 3 года назад
You should not end up with a pocket. They ARE connected 🤔
@zekiah2
@zekiah2 3 года назад
@@NimbleNeedles it is connected at the edges, the cast on, and the bind off. But, The middle is not connected. I guess bubble is a better analogy as all sides are sealed but I can pull the two faces of the swatch away from each other. It is like I made two fabrics that are connected at the edges. I want it to be one fabric that is thick and squishy

@@NimbleNeedles what? The separate sides is a fundamental aspect of the stitch. This is a technique to do double knitting with one yarn for gosh sakes If you don’t have any ideas that’s fine but don’t try to gaslight me

Can you make a hat with this stitch
@NimbleNeedles
@NimbleNeedles Год назад
yes sure. However, do keep it mind to use smaller needles than you usually would and decreases are a bit more tricky in double-knitting.
