Actually, it's just hair. But they can change a person completely. Up to 100,000 hairs are knotted until a wig is finished. A wigmaker has to work hard to make sure it fits. She therefore needs both strength and a sure instinct. Beate Dreher learned wig making from scratch. She used to be a make-up artist at the theater in Freiburg.
It can take up to sixteen weeks to complete a wig. From the first impression, to the casting of the model heads, to the sewing of the make-up, to the knotting, there are many steps on the long and arduous path to the finished wig. A real piece of craftsmanship. And even more. Because hair is more than just threads of horn. It is a symbol. A statement. They give strength and self-confidence.
Beate Dreher's wig workshop is hidden away in Ihringen am Kaiserstuhl. A deliberately discreetly chosen place, because her customers do not like to be recognized. Wearing a wig is still a taboo for many.
Beate Dreher's customers are mostly women who have lost their hair due to an illness. Be it through chemo after cancer or through a so-called alopecia universalis, in which the hair falls out completely and usually irrevocably within a few months.
These customers in particular value hair that looks especially real and natural.
Beate Dreher makes wigs that are individually tailored to their wearer, that are made just for her and that would not fit any other woman.
