In this workshop I'll be showing you a weird method, a stupid story and 3 patterns (you need to know these as a guitar player) to help you to know all the notes on the fretboard and memorize the fretboard fluently. If you've been struggling to learn the fretboard on guitar I guarantee if you apply the 3 patterns in the manner I explain you'll be able to learn the fretboard faster, find and name guitar notes super easy!

Eyup! I'm Ricky Comiskey :)
I'm a UK guitar teacher with around 30 years of experience teaching guitar privately, in schools, further education, and in rehabilitation organizations. I want to help you realize your goal of playing guitar and making music. It really is one of the most amazing gifts you can give yourself.
I pride myself on giving beginning guitar players the foundation skills needed to become the guitar player they want to be. I have lots of quirky insights and tools to help you understand the elegant layout of the guitar fretboard, understand chords, scales and much more!
In 2006 I founded "Ricky's school of rock", which is a real school of rock set in 6000 sq ft of dedicated teaching space, where my staff of 16 tutors and myself teach every day. Teaching guitar is my calling and legacy.
The results and outcomes YOU are seeking are what drives the content of every lesson. My background as an NLP practitioner enables me to have a unique, incisive and effective take on learning guitar that defeats the self-doubt adult learners can face when coming back to learning. I care deeply about your results.
The guitar lesson videos I teach here on RU-vid have been meticulously tested and finessed in real life guitar classes and lessons with thousands of real live students.

72 YO - had piano lessons as a kid and that only lasted a couple years. You can't keep the attention of a kid with classical music when he wants to be Fats Domino or Chubby Checker - those were the a&& kickers of the day. Learning the keyboard is a no-brainer compared to the fretboard. It looks the same from top to bottom. That gave me a head start on theory but that was it. Fast forward to the day I decided to pick up a guitar and then Twenty two years later, I'm in the same boat with you. I've seen a lot of online instruction and Ricky has one of the best approaches to teaching I've seen. If I can get out of this on-again off-again routine I think he can actually teach me how to have fun with this 5 string + 1 instrument. Funny thing, one of the first songs I learned was House of the Rising Sun. Great minds.... right?

Holy cow big guy! This is the craziest, unorthodox, mind bugling way to memorize the fretboard. And most of all, even I could learn this puzzle. How you sliced and diced this fretboard and knowing where you're at at any given time is simply awesome. Cheers from Florida, USA.

Ricky thanks a lot for all your help And videos, I wish you were here in Tyne and Wear NE to teach me in person. I have purchased your book though and it’s arriving. So I have figured out some new patterns on the fretboard in this video. First of All, all the 3 scales modes have 17 notes without the sharps and flats that ascend and descend in a vertical way, that reminds me an escalator (scales) that moves people (notes) when a new person (note) step on it, the next one down or bellow (because we have escalators that goes down and up) and when one is reaching the end this person is moving away (the kink between the B note, is moving away the escalator (scale pattern ). I hope you understand this way I see. I think your the best teacher here, because you are patient, cool, funny, ludic (playful) and lovely.

I learnt guitar almost 15 plus years, went through some private music classes, joined music club while I was in university, went for the School of Rock certification but to no avail still not able to memorize the notes on the fretboard. But you sir, you just taught me how to do it EFFECTIVELY. That late Charles's father coupled with A team being spotted by that american boy, all the way to Aeolian, Phrygian and Dorian, just unlocked my fretboard!! Thank you teacher, from the bottom of my heart

Thanks Rickey! I’ve wondered since the time I started learning guitar, how I would easily descend with these patterns. I was hearing and seeing the ascending notes and patterns, but hadn’t fully or securely “memorized” or know ALL the notes on the fretboard so descending seemed impossible or at least very frustrating to grasp! You are an AWESOME Teacher! This should start bringing me to another of many necessary breakthroughs in order to advance my playing skills. You make it fun! One Love

I’ve watched your other videos about fretboard navigation, and albeit they’re all very good - this is the best one! I found the best way to learn, is by playing, but I found there are gaps in the information. It may be my instructor hadn’t covered it, or I just didn’t grasp it on the first time around. Your videos (and book) have been a wonderful resource for me. This video helped out in a big way! 🎉

Just to throw in here something I've been doing, is using the metronome with learning the fret board. Setting the metronome to 4/4, and hitting each note four times on the beat.. while playing scales (or something like it LOL). I can practice different beats this way, too. This gives me a chance to error correct and adjust with the fingers and pluck before the next note. I remembered this technique when learning the violin in school for a few months when I was 8.. Came in handy then, and is working for me now.
@rickysguitar
@rickysguitar 4 года назад
I love this Benjamin! I did a video a while back that I never published about learning scales. Try this for more homework: as well as playing each note 4 times, work on it as a rhythm pyramid by playing the note twice per beat and then once per beat. Once the muscle memory kicks in on the singles it’s time to up the tempo in increments of 10bpm. Keep going until it fails. Write what bpm it fails. Do that as part of your practice routine. It’s astounding to see how much faster your “break” speed is after a few weeks of doing this!
@benjaminbrink5098
@benjaminbrink5098 4 года назад
@@rickysguitar Thank you. As my error rate drops, I'll switch to fewer notes. I was going to go 3 then 2 then 1, and yet I like your idea of 2 then 1. Right now bpm is set at 127. I started at about 60bpm. My stretch target is 260 after a little warm up. Since I've reached my minimum goal of 120bpm, that of average songs and the song I'm learning, I'm starting to learn "the 10 Chords Every Beginner Guitar Player Should Begin With" (from your worksheet) and adding a couple to get all the ones in my target first song.
