How To Know if You've Done Enough Worldbuilding

I've found that if I think about it too much, I'll never write it. I have to plan but it's my double-edged sword.

Sometimes I think I'm the only person in the galaxy who actually enjoys world building .

I plan about 80% of my world, then drop characters in there with a goal and conflict. My first drafts are always all over the place 😭.

How to know if you've done enough worldbuilding: I mean, you haven't, so...

Brandon Sanderson's fantasy worlds are quite intricate, so he was saying a lot when he said that you don't have to know the other 90%. I believe that Orson Scott Card also said something similar about how not all of the material you have for your world will show up in your finished story. Certainly don't force it in because you don't want all your efforts of creating it to go to waste. But having and knowing that information should help you stay within conducive bounds for a more sustainable storytelling.

I can't fathom the amount of passion I have for world building. I had made the characters and the plot beforehand with just the minimum amount of the world around it. It was difficult at first, but when I discovered the kind of world I wanted it to be, it became easy and fun. Just on a whim, I'd get inspired about a character, creature, place, or event and even if it has no relevance to the main plot I'd have it there just for the sake of being in the world. And just from that inspiration, you can make so many stories from a world of your design.

Great advice -- I've been pantsing away and my story is getting complicated, even though the world is in my head, I need to logically get the specifics written down in a 'world bible', so I can keep track of everything!!! Thanks so much!

On the other hand could a lot of WB tend to confine say your character's reactions or say you develop a situation and then get inspired by your previous WB rather than that brilliant idea just waiting in that grey zone? But i'll try this as you are inspirational and see how it changes my shit!

Hey, I am trying to make an isekai I cut one race out of in the second draft because I felt like the kingdom would be impossible to reach? I did make an Empire, a huge empire in draft one but in draft two it was erased and the race who inhabits the empire turned into a simple bloodlust tribal society I thought to myself maybe not every story should have an evil empire 'Cliche'. Now I have like 12 sentient beings in draft two. I am trying to avoid humans in this fantasy world so it kind turn into middle earth. Is that a bad thing? because it was an accident.

I always world build a lot but hardly ever even finish draft 2 lol. Like, I'll create maps, cultures, nursery rhymes, songs, trends, even a language once, and hardly ever use it ;-:
