In the debut episode of #PickRichsBrain, the theme of "what do I need to know prior to moving to Nashville to chase a career in music?" seemed quite prevalent. Rich has been crushing it in Nashville for over 20 years and shares his experiences and advice on how and what to do once you get to Nashville to start your music career.
Pick Rich's Brain is a show where you get to ask 30 year Nashville veteran drummer/producer/speaker/performer Rich Redmond any question you may have about the music and other businesses, networking, life, money, or pretty much anything via #pickrichsbrain.
Voiced and Produced by @jimmccarthyvos

WTF is with all the negativity in this thread? I will never understand musicians trying to tear one another down. Rich is an incredible drummer. He is a blast to watch live. Hes not Buddy Rich, Jeff Porcaro, or Neil Peart. Hes just Rich Redmond. A guy who has been super successful at doing what he does. Im not sure why that warrants all the negativity towards him. And to say being an A list session drummer is "not skill related" but just "being in the right place at the right time" is absolute NONSENSE. You can be in the right place at the right time but if you dont have the skill to go into the studio and cut these songs in one or two takes, they wont take a second glance at you. If any of you guys who are in here ripping him up want to post your resumes then get with it. I would sure love to see it.

No Problem. Derek Joseph and I have discussed your talents many times. I am his drummer whenever he decides to gig these days!!!

They won’t post their resumes. Trolls are omnipresent. Anyway, you mentioned some of the the guys that always win drummer polls due to their prowess, and that’s important. Without Buddy you likely wouldn’t have had a Neil Peart and without Neil, I may not have found the drum set. But look who sells out coliseums, bands featuring Peter Chris and freakin Tommy Lee. Both great performers but drumming savants? I don’t think so. They play music that makes the guys head nod and the girls hips shake. I don’t know about you but I listen to more Aldean and Godsmack than Tower of Power and Yes.

Rich Redmond sounds like one cool guy who has made his success by staying true to his passion and goals and using all his resources including his personality and attitude. If he has created a worthwhile primer for aspirant drummers and musicians, one should take note. And he is a hell of a player!

Why doesn't this have more views? Oh yeah no 32 note zig zag bops, that look and sound cool, but it will also get you fired. RU-vid is filled with so many " professionals " I am just glad someone who is actually doing it takes his time and breaks off a piece of reality to the world.

Its interesting that I find myself watching videos like this. I'm 36, have been playing since I was 8, and just watching virtuoso drummers blaze all day just isn't as exciting as it once was. I'm actually in a unique position in that I'm a successful entrepreneur and money is a non-issue. At the same time, I want to leave an imprint on the music world. A drummer is a part of a collective. We as drummers tend to spend too much time obsessing and geeking out over things that have very little practical use for a working drummer. How many no. 1 songs have any of you heard that had a drummer pulling out his entire bag of tricks? Zero! I'm not going to say its not interesting to hear drummers push the envelope and come up with cool things, but those things are more or less superfluous. I'm a drummer, and a keyboardist, and I want to learn songwriting and production. I want to be the complete musical package. Maybe I'll never be the no. 1 most revered technical musician in the world, but I'm fine with that. To me, that is an empty pursuit. I want to make great music. Music that will last. The things Rich Redmond talks about will assist me in reaching my goals.

Great point Pawg Lover. I thought this video was something else. I played drums for 20 years before I picked up the guitar and piano to really start making meaningful music. Now I am at the point where I am wondering if moving to where the action is will help get me to the next level. That's what I thought this video was about. Good luck in you pursuits. Check my songs out sometime. instagram.com/juddwarrick.

Diggin' the haircut Rich! Great video, I subscribed. I've been trying a pair of your ProMark sig sticks - nice forward balance and the ActiveGrip is real nice. I use them in my band when we play She's Country for that authentic Rich experience!!

hi Rich I'm a Country Vocalist and American songwriter from Modesto California, Ive been playing rythem guitar since I was 12 started writing at 17 and I'm 22 now doing my first real album with 11 song on it I've been called a young Eric Church that's kinda if my style, why is Cali going towards more metal and rap and pop I'm noticing it's getting harder and harder for country Rock artist like myself to get shows ,Places out here want traditional country and I play that style but i dont perform that style and I get , Complaints that my style is to loud for clubs and bars , when I'm barley playing or touching my strings any advice would be great , Im dedicating and sacrificing my whole life to sing and write country music thanks and I just bought A 2000 Taylor Acoustic so I'm not quitting anytime soon #Countrymusicislife
