This is honestly good advice in my experience, short slow pumps up with the rod, just enough to crank some line back on. Too fast and too high seems it makes pulling a hook more likely. I also ease up on them slightly and lower the rod some when they surge because you never know how that hook is set. I also like the pull to the right when they go left and vice versa as you mention, because again makes it less likely to pull a hook. If they pop their head trying to shake the hook with their face pointed towards the angler or direction the line is being pulled from, seems they’re more likely to throw the hook. You never know exactly how/where that fish is hooked until you get ready to release it. Sometimes you got a well embedded hook in a perfect spot, sometimes it’s in shallow in a weaker spot. You can learn something from each one you catch, and also each one that gets away.
Yeeeeah buddies! Love it when you team up with Capt. Hollywoooooood! Always gets me pumped to see you guys down at the Keys!!! Nice to see Joe putting some muscle behind that rod! Amazing beauty Joe! Lots of patience my man! Amazing pointers on silver kings! Makes total sense not to over tighten that drag. We need more drag screaming, brutal action baby! Love it!
There is a whole psychology behind those who fish for sport and those who only fish with foraging in mind. I have never targeted tarpon for that reason, but still, sometimes I get tempted by the thought of that challenge. Just don't kill it because you can't eat it -- well, actually you can but it is reputed to have a bad taste and mushy flesh. Also, a special permit is needed in order to keep one. I believe it is also against the law to take it out of the water unless keeping it, although I have seen it done when necessary to get the hook out.
@@rexrusso3963 exactly what I am saying. So many better fishing fish out there.. Amberjack, jack crevelle, sharks, tuna, swordfish... all great for catch and release and fight harder than tarpon. Esp Jacks and tunas.
