Dude you don't know how much relieved I'm feeling after watching this tutorial. I was pursuing my veterinary medicine degree but dropped out of college due to graphic design and started freelancing. I didn't get much clients so I'm looking for a job but was worried about degree, portfolio and experience stuff. I'll apply the tips you shared. I really want to get a job before turning 21 next year. Let's see 🧡
I studied physical therapy so I understand the balls it takes to make that leap of faith from a safe medical career into a creative one, mucho respect Appreciate the kind words. Good luck and lmk if you had any Q’s
@@Tre-333My whole family was against me. I was gonna be the first doctor in my family but I ruined their expectations. Only my mother was on my side. Thankfully after a big fight and my crying, they finally let it slide.
I'm in medical school but I'm leaving to become a graphic designer cuz that's what I wanted to do since I was a kid. But it's so scary making that 180-degree jump and I'm not sure I'll ever land a good job.
I'm in a similar process as well!! I have been a teacher for years, but always had a passion for design...even when I was getting my degree. I pushed that feeling aside for YEARS, and I was always worried about leaving the security of that teaching job. But the past 2 years I've learned so much as a self taught designer, and I'm finally feeling ready to apply for design jobs. At the end of the day, you can't change what's meant to be yours in life.
As someone who has just graduated from uni for graphic design this video made me feel fucking great I can’t lie, I’ve been freaking out for these past months, thinking I’m not as good as everyone else and that I can’t ever make it, but your transparency made me feel so much better ;-;
Congrats on graduating! Just remember there’s literally thousands of designers in your city making a good living with bad taste, undeserved confidence and zero intention of improving their skills. You’ll be fine i’m sure of it 🤝
I personally don't think AI is going to replace every designer because AI can only work with prompts that have already been used in the past and can't create new art on it's own. You will always need to have some sort of human input and editing needed in order to get a truly fitting result. What I would agree on is that in the future every designer will be kind of forced to work with AI because it makes things so much easier and it can safe you lots of time which results in more efficiency overall.
Good take, yeah I think (good) creative direction will always need to led by a human. But you can slash entire junior and most mid-level designer roles, as prompts will automate grunt work (as if Canva hasn’t done that already lmao) It’s like a more extreme version of the invention of the camera making photorealistic painting obsolete. Taste and creative vision will be more important than it’s ever been
@@Tre-333 So what do you think it's better to study with graphic design skills or what is better to upgrade as a graphic designer? just wanna know your opinion what will be changed after 5 years?
@@TetyanaKarnydaltbh the most important thing is to present other skills along with graphic design. Like branching out into motion design, packaging design, ui/ux and web design, etc
This is the only content I've found that has clear and concise advice for new designers, and I have a bachelors and all the resources of a university. King
Damn, he said lie😂 this video here😅, ngl tho-he's right- my hubby is an HR mgr & I've seen him interview tons of ppl & go through tons of resumes & we have convos about this stuff all of the time & this is what ppl who get ahead do, the people who succeed are savage like this guy. He's dead on point about everything here.
You have genuinely fixed my life,I turned down a project manager job that was offered to me because I don't have a degree. But I've been working for years!!! Good God imposter syndrome
Honestly, I've been feeling a lot stressed out today about whether or not I'll get a job in graphic design, even though I'm in my final year in my Graphic Design program. This video helped me out! Thank you so much!
i love this video cause i always click on these types of vids expecting some annoying artist who thinks they are better than everyone but this is some actually real, tangible good advice
This actually made me giggle. Sh**. Let me do this stuff. I've been lying to myself for 2 months that I need to finish my portfolio. For 2 months I've been seeing job openings and freelance work that pays great with benefits and insurances. But here I am on my lazy camp chair on the roof top of the apartment I'm staying looking at the night city view wondering when I'll make it in life and be debt free when I could have been living the good life If I just finish my GOD DAMN PORTFOLIO.
You my friemd are 100% correct! Also the most important thing is if you know how to design. If you can design cool things, nobody will question your education or work experience.
I cant seem to get out of this imposter syndrome which is why im not even able to apply for jobs, tho people around me tell me im good enough to land my first job but still i keep feeling that im not good at what i do and the thought of working in an office where everyone can see and judge my work process scare the fuck out of me.
totally understandable. i used to always work in my room alone and only ever reveal a finished piece of art that i was proud of (which was 1% of my art) but when i got my first job as an illustrator for a tv network i had to show my progress at the end of each day (no matter how incomplete). it’s a bit difficult at first, but unless ur team is full of dickheads - everyone’s professional and only trying to help you make the best possible art. i wouldn’t worry about it. you’ll develop thick skin easy. as far as impostor syndrome, u just gotta put blinders on and go for it. i guarantee u’ll learn more in 1 month than u would in 1 year if u put urself in uncomfortable scenarios
I would argue that if you want to and able to, just go to college. Sometimes its the way of thinking or solving problem that they teach us, and not the hard skill. Then again, Graphic design is one of the field where your portfolio is worth more than your degree. I have worked with a psychology graduate illustrator before and even lost to a candidate that isn't even an art or graphic design graduate. I feel pretty defeated now, i should probably lie more on my resume so it doesn't look too focused on one graphic design niche
I graduated on December 16,2023, and have yet to get an internship. 😂I couldn't agree more with your last part about AI taking over the design industry. Even if it might be a joke, I found a lot of your advice helpful here!
Congrats on graduating! I trashed art school a lot in my video haha but that’s still an accomplishment most people don’t get thru Good luck on finding an internship, it can take some time 😮💨
i always make posters for small business for free because my friends ask me to. i always wanted to be a graphic designer but due lack of educational attainment (im high school grad) i always think no, they wont accept people like me. till i found this video. (i do all my edits on my own yt channel using my phone and thinking "i can do it" ). THANKS A LOT :>
Bruh that’s perfectly legitimate work experience. Way better than paying a bored college professor 10k a semester to mark your homework (amongst 20 other art students) Just go for it 🤝
I spent 3 months trying to get a job interview through my CV. It wasn’t working so I just ended up creating a new resume where I quite literally lied about half the things. It worked, I’ve been at my dream job for over a year now. ... so yeah, Lie
This is so true for life in general. One of the top RU-vidrs on this platform with over 30 million subs started her channel by faking her gameplay and reading from scripts made for her. The majority of the people at the top either were born in it or they faked their way into it.
hello Tre, thank you so much for your tips. Honestly this video just boosted my energy and enthusiasm level from 1 to 100 I am a 15 years old enthusiast who is very interested in graphic design. I have learned mostly everything I need to know about graphic design, i watched lots of youtube courses and stuff like that. I was wondering whats the age limit for this job? am I too young? thanks again 🙏
I’m glad it inspired you. Honestly, I would assume there’s no age requirement to do graphic design. In fact, there’s probably some advantages to being young as you’re more connected to pop culture and internet trends (very desired in the design field) Only reveal your age to your employer if they ask for it. I’m replying to you on an iPhone that was probably assembled by a 9 year old kid in Pakistan, so I reckon go for it
Wow dude thats straight up a great advice for someone who wants to land his way inside the industry, I've been drawing, designing for fun ever since i was a kid and still do. I've done so many works that have piles of designs and illustration work of every single category, from 3d designs like stylized architecture/character/environment/industrial/stylized weapons design( fantasy, steampunk, medieval, Scandinavian etc etc) to 2d design/illustration like minimalistic stuffs including cafe product, branding, visual development, giftcard, attire, accessories , cute doodles, cute chars etc... the problem is i enjoy doing everything i mentioned and can't stick to one subject.. idk what to do, even if i chose one out of it i still dont know which companies to approach because i never applied anywhere before. Now im 23 with no degree also not good at english.. do you still think i can get a job ?? I also have a communication fear.
I’m exactly like you too. I’ve worked in animation, illustration, graphic design, architecture and photo-videography. The most important thing is to land your first job and you can start branching out from there pretty easily. I’d recommend graphic design the most, as it’s the easiest to wrap your head around + has the most job vacancies from what I’ve observed. Also don’t worry about communication skills too much, the senior designer/creative director will be doing most of the talking with clients
I would try to get a job while living in America (stay there for a couple months) then do a bait-and-switch with your whole digital nomad thing. That way you get to keep your USD salary while living in a low COL area like Argentina
Good Q. LinkedIn is mostly just a circle jerk for financebros. Only once you’ve reached the mid-senior stage of your career will recruiters bother to invest hours on detective work. Hopefully by then you don’t need to lie as you would’ve actually gained legit experience
The autism bit should’ve been edited out. My partner is autistic and is a senior designer at a magazine here in NY so what was your goal w that comment???
Have you ever been questioned about your made up experience or referees? Do you think they'd reject me if they can't get in contact with my referees or can't see a verified degree on my seek profile?
Nope never been questioned. The only design degree you can’t fake is architecture (and that’s only if you want to be a licensed architect, you can still apply for architectural designer roles) If you can just get by your first full-time entry level job you’re in the clear. The rule is: work experience beats a degree every time
@Tre-333 Appreciate the reassurance! These days it's hard to trust people the internet and to follow in their footsteps cause there's so much they don't actually tell you, but you've been the most authentic and inspirational person i've come across yet.
Agreed. Most people on the internet aren’t making content to be creative they’re just trying to sell a product. But yeah, thanks dude I appreciate the compliment
I am here, after completing a rigorous 4 year bachelor's in design degree, and three failed jobs, this is so encouraging and I love how real and conversational this felt
this was the first video I found of yours. The way you delivered all of this was hilarious and inpowering. I did my first cold email back in Decemeber, and in January it landed me a $600.00 job. NEVER BE AFRAID OF COLD EMAILS ! It feels weird doing it, but none of those people on indeed are whiping out a personalized email. You definitely got a follow from me, and Im going to be using these steps in the near future.
Congrats on the 600 dollar gig, so glad that worked out for you haha. My mentality is if we’re not born lucky - we have to make our own luck 🍀 Thanks for the sub + the kind words
i am trying really hard to get a job as a graphic desighner jobs can you tell me what sort of websites hire more i have done over 50 emails still failing to ee get a reply
i appreciate how gully this dude keeps it. i've been looking for videos like this that covers things that can actually be APPLIED to real life scenarios. thanks!
hey bro. listen if theres any type of resorces you may know of for me to get into IT. like shit just bad right now. unemployed, sued, broke and in debt. i just need a point in the right direction. tired of the bullshit jobs. and definately cant afford tuition cost. @@Tre-333
Damn breh, that sounds rough. I know a lot of friends who signed up to General Assembly bootcamps with zero exp and make 6 figs doing programming. Your last name is Lopez so play into a Hispanic/indigenous background and score a diversity scholarship
Loved the whole video bro. Got a little scared about the AI replacement part but I'll think of something in 5 years. Also, that's exactly gow I got a job as a junior copywriter. Created a portfolio in 4 hours and got a job within 24 hrs. I'm back at graphic design after 3 months at the job. Should put that experience on my resume?
Appreciate it, yeah that’s the way bro Looking back, after working with AI tech that’s available today I reckon it’s still a while away before graphic designers get fully replaced. But there will be a rapid move away from valuing low/mid level technical skill to the importance of visual identity and theory knowledge. So as long as we stay on top of that we should be aight Also yeah, definitely include that in your resume. Content is content whether it’s graphic, video or text based. Lots of crossover there
I dropped out of college in 2008. I've been self taught as a graphic designer since 2006. Even now in 2023, I still don't know where to start when it comes to becoming a graphics designer, but this video helped a lot.
I love this dude!! As soon as he said download a pirated copy of photoshop i LOL paused the video and wrote this comment.. Most are gonna tell you to download a trail or some shit when they know themselves they pirated the shit LMFAO!! This dude keeps it real (SUBBED!!) Now on to finish watching the video!
Lmao just speaking facts 🤷♂️ Adobe doesn’t care. They secretly prefer that beginners pirate their software that way they remain the industry standard. Hope you found the rest of the video helpful
First of our real graphic designers don’t engage in vandalism. That’s what your graffiti there is indicating. I would never recommend anybody following. What a vandal recommends. I’m a professional graphic designer. I live in breathe my profession I design everything in my head before putting it down, I beat every deadline. I never lied in my résumé or anything. I come from a humble background working class family, my father died my mom help me raise me. She raise me with some ethics and morals and is not the way to go. It’s unfortunate that I see people taking on a street like this profession that you should be working at home all the time they should be dressed like a thug or skater or whatever the heck hip-hop means. Nothing makes you look unprofessional. I get it. I get it you want to express yourself that’s what you are, but you can’t be encouraging a degradation of a profession. You have to have some pride and self-respect. One of things I will tell you from experience doing this for many many many years and it’s proven 100% correct faking a portfolio faking a resume gets around and you really talented which you should be from a young age the ability to draw design paint do something creative. It should be natural you should be born with it. You’re never trained in it. You may think you are, but you are never , going to be like in real but I will tell you the right people see you. They will know they will know how good you are. How valuable and how talented you are. It just takes the right people the right GOOD people. It may seem like they’re not around, but they are it’s just, they see their eyes light up.
I am graduating high school and focusing on becoming UI/UX designer but when i saw job offers requirements i felt really overwhelmed and i felt that i won't be able to get the job. You are amazing! I feel much better now!
Yeah tru I was exaggerating. There’s always going to be a market for graphic designers, but the ability to A.I. prompt design elements will become essential
