as annoying as this man is, the infomation was great. I used Bradstone blocks last week and spent a good amount of time listening to this and other videos. The end result was great.
I thought you had to run the whacker plate over the blocks to compact them down before the jointing? This step wasn't mentioned and it's a crucial step
Something I don't understand, is how come if it's only sand below the cobblestone when a vehicle drives over them they don't sink and can take the weight? You see some driveways look terrible after just a year huge divits
finished job looks well. Were the kerb stones laid upsidedown and back to front? Perhaps there are a number of ways to lay them, but l thought the chamfer should be on top facing towards the drive?
Hi iam just in the process of take my drive back up I put it down my self over 10 years ago as the blocks have moved a bit through pressure washing and age . Can't remember do the bocks have to be slightly rased to the concrete edging blocks so they will level of after wacking down
Would the paving blocks need to be placed a little higher than the height I want them to finish at ? I ask because when using the whacker I imagine it's going to push the blocks down , if I'm right how much higher would you recommend? I'm using the paving slabs that are in place already to start the block paving so I need them to be the same level when finished
Good vid....One question.. :do you need to use a rubber pad on the plate compactor when compacting the blocks...8:25 looks like no pad.. just the plate compactor??
I'd say yes, blocks are so poor now 50mm if you haven't got the rubber Matt, you end up with a load of broken pavers that you have to dig out and replace.
can you lay the edge restraints onto the soil (or membrane if putting down) or is it best to lay the first 75mm of hardcore? im not putting in kerbs im just doing a soldier course?
My home sits on sand that goes down 20 ft. I want to put down pavestones for a driveway, do you have any suggestions on how to prep the ground since there is no rock base below the sand? I was going to use a plate compactor to make sure my foundation is solid. Any tips to avoid a disaster down the road?
Balast is a mix of sharp sand and small stones, so to make concrete you needs this, however mortar is used to bed your edge retaining course, no concrete is needed for this project unless you are parking extremely heavy vehicles, were it would be used in the sub base with reinforcing mesh. The advice to use concrete is incorrect it should be a mortar mix.
So if you were laying blocks in stages is it better to compact one area and then do the next (especially if it was being done over several days) or is it better to leave it and compact all in one?
You could do it, but it will take much longer! Pros will have a crew, all the necessary equipment, and get the materials to the site on time. There are a lot of logistics you will have to sort out, but I think the actual labor wouldn’t be too hard, but time consuming!
Lovely video. But, I'm not sure if substrate rock base of 150mm is actually necessary where gravel/rock/clay already exist. Have a backyard with concrete on clay that's been there for at least 50 years with four minor cracks in it. I think that's pretty robust. Sand, however is essential since, it's nearly impossible to get a perfect level surface for the pavers.
+jaker5555 i would say 80 to 100mm and about 30mm of sand... remember to use taram under the hardcore or your hardcore will disapear and you will end up with a sunken driveway
The edging blocks weren't even laid in a straight line, awful! This guy looks like he spends most of his time in an office with his feet under a desk rather than out on site laying drive ways. Really irritating back ground musak as well.
Disintegrated granite is the best for the bed and the sand on top is called polymeric sand The alternative for the top is disintegrated granite for for compaction and spraying it all with epoxy based sealant All that aside, great video Shows each step of the bricklaying process
Non of this matters if you're getting a rip-off tradie scammer to do it, you'll only get a good job done properly with the correct tools and aggregates if you do it yourself.
