How to Layer Vinyl Samples // My Workflow for Making a 90s Type Sample Beat From Scratch

When you are sampling from vinyl, it can be difficult to match up multiple samples as you have match keys, tempos, etc. In this video I am going through my workflow layering multiple record samples, and making them blend together smoothly on the MPC One. But this strategy can be translated to any sampler.
For this beat I used the MPC One as the standalone tool to flip/mix all of the vinyl samples, including drums, melodies, and bass. The samples used are by Blue Magic, a classic soulful group, and Eddie Harris, a legendary saxophone player and jazz musician.
I hope you enjoy this workflow and the sample based beat, and I hope the video provides some inspiration for your own production. I will be in the comments, so let me know what you want to see in a future video!

I loved this video bro. Layering is what I struggle with the most. Really nice sample and bass line that you created. It would be great to see a part 2 of this where you crate a beat with the standard foundation (sample, drums, bass), and then layer on 2-4 additional sounds. This is difficult for me. Maybe a video seeing your workflow, method, tips and tricks etc… on approaching multiple layers.

Man I've been diving into your videos to help me understand the MPC better. It's been extremely helpful. I'm not even sampling vinyl but your ideas about how to chop and arrange are priceless. I especially like that custom delay idea with the 16 levels. I have seen you mention it a few times and I'm definitely stealing that trick. Keep the beats coming man. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.

Been looking at your channel lately. I like your delivery.. basic sampling 101 but your saying it like it's NEW.. which IMO is the best way to teach.. love your enthusiasm. And the number of videos where you use the MPC One as a basic sampler!. Reminds us all about going back to basics.. two or 3 drum programs and a handful of samples.. smh.. THEN, let's think about effects and synths and audio tracks and side chains and whatnot.. that'd how it was done on the 90's.. everything outside of the sampling engine is just icing on the cake.. ;). @Host No disrespect to either of you, but you must be easily pleased and you don't know what you don't know yet. Nice sounds, but not an "MPC teacher" as such. Too many misunderstandings of basic MIDI things for an old MIDI person in their late 40s to accept! I'm sure even you could find someone who knows less than you and teach them something about the device they don't know. It's all relative. I just enjoy listening to his beats; not much tutoring for me here and several misunderstandings. And he will only learn more over time. As he has in the last year regards the potential of MIDI and having not been using his gear to it's full potential up until then. I say this because there are better, more experienced teachers and you seem easily impressed. People don't seem to want to RTFM anymore, eh? That's the only true way to know the potential of your gear. A lot of the time, that's all the "tute" person has done for you because you didn't do it yourself for whatever reason.

@@thekeysman6760 my beats have improved loads,I like the way Ryan breaks down things, he does it in a nice simple way. I think you need to relax fella, I have my opinion and theres nothing you can say to change that. Instead of writing a dissertation in the RU-vid comments go find something else to do buddy, as your sounding like a bit of a fruitcake.
@thekeysman6760
@thekeysman6760 Год назад
And your attitude towards me would change if I was to direct you to a certain video of Ryan's where he totally miscommunicated a MIDI circuit of 3 devices and would cause problems for a beginner if they were actually paying attention. Wrong information posing as correct really pisses me off. It's obvious to an experienced person that he just didn't know what he was saying, but to pass it on to others takes effort and a belief that one is correct. That's irresponsible imo. But according to you he's the best MPC teacher above and beyond everybody. Best of luck in this world with that approach and attitude! You'll need it. 😁 Sorry I tried to warn and help you. Great beats from Ryan though! Will eventually become a good teacher too. His manner is perfect for it now.

Hey! Just got your videos suggested by YT. Actually love what I've seen so far! :) For me personally as a very beginner I would need a advise on how to start e. g. what would you recommend to make as a first step? Putting together a four layer beat? I kind of struggle to approach this properly. And second: I have problems when I found a sample how to match this to bpm of my beat, or should I match the bpm of my beat to the sample? Would appreciate any help!

@The Dude Both ways you mentioned in the last paragraph are used in different circumstances. You're over thinking the wrong things and need to simply embark on being creative. You can't over think things when you don't know what you're doing initially. Just embark and you will learn as you play. You have to be doing something creative to then have situations arise so you can choose how to deal with them. Kind of like life, generally. Otherwise you wouldn't step out of the house!

@@thekeysman6760 Hello my friend, thank you for your comment which I definately embrace a lot and I will consider while being in the process. However, I still would need to know which cases do apply in which situation as I always face the situation that my sample does not mach the current pbm of the track (AKAI MPC One User here). Can you help me on this one? Much love
@thekeysman6760
@thekeysman6760 Год назад
@@thedude73 Hey man! Well I don't know all the features of the MPC One, but prior to that the Akai units I knew had Timestretch and Warping. You have to know the bpm of the original sample to use these, which the unit can tell you. One bar of an old track that may or may not have been played to a click track is easier than a sample with more bars which will have more timing deviations over time. Warp can lose some low end if you are going down in tempo, whereas Timestretch always sounds good. If you are speeding up a sample it doesn't effect the sound so much. Once you decide and stick to a tempo then it's easier to decide what options to use when stretching the sample whatever way. Also, it may be useful to remember that an untouched sample may loop perfectly at 84.6 bpm or whatever as a starting point. I hope this may be helpful?! Best wishes. 🙏

I bought "Thirteen blud magic lane" lp and trying to sample from it as a practice with MPC. But, I am not sure if you have sampled from a song or multiple songs. I think back ground chord is from the first track... What about the Vibraphone... Not sure about tone or pitch variation. ...

Hey má friend. Love you vids. Nice vibe. Nice asthetics. Everything. I work with the MPC1000 in a kind of an unusual manner I think. I chop and play the chops in. Often I feel like "ok they are quite right but not perfect". Than I use the slider to global detune the samples of this layer|track. That sounds nice like another dimension for this track than. But now I have to match the rest not just to the right semitones but to the right detuned semitones. This is hard and I can't even think how to play with a guitar to this. Is this workflow just insane or does it make me the best producer in 20 years? ~peace
@thekeysman6760
@thekeysman6760 Год назад
If you're in that much of a mess, then that's a pointless workflow but if you finish the track and it's good, who cares? You are creating problems for yourself, that's for sure.
