Great topic! I love how you explained that technique is your tools and without them you can only do so much to express your own ideas. Actually everything you said was so helpful!
I have the recordings of the Bach solo works and I bought the sheet music and went from there. I especially like your advice on finding your own interpretation, since I have tended to try to copy the style of Victoria Mullova on the Back solos. I will now be more confident in finding my own interpretation. I like the Baroque solo works for violin and have ordered the Telemann solo violin fantasies. The sheet music and recordings are available.
+Joy Lee Congrats on the 9000 plus sub's Joy! I searched your channel and found the videos on double stops and they helped a ton with intonation. you're a life saver! XD
Hi Sing Meng, I already made a video about it. Please click the link here. Happy practicing! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m4q1vGKQ_Po.html
Thank you for your video Instructor Joy Lee. While I understand fingerings are very personal and that we can decide on our own (within limits), I feel it is quite different for bowings. To which extent can we change bowings without alienating the character of a piece? I understand that some bowings are indicated by the composer himself. The editor put those on the sheet music for a good reason. If I start changing the bowings, I will tend to adapt them to my weak technique, whereas I should develop my technique to adjust to the marked bowings. What is your idea about it? Thank you.
Dear Mo, when it comes to bowing, in general we would work with the physics of the bow. For heavier tone, we would use starting from the heavier part of the bow from the frog using down bow. For softer, lighter tone, we would use starting from the lighter part of the bow from the tip using upbow. In music theory the first beat of each measure is the strongest beat/tone with small exceptions, so using down bow on the first beat note would be a good choice for most times. But if you are using fancy bow strokes such as upbow staccato, ricochet, spiccato etc, we must place the bow on the specific place and maintain to be on the specific spot of the bow using organized bows. I am simplifying many things here, but I hope this gave you an idea. Happy practising!
