How to Learn Physiology in Medical School 

This is exactly my outlook on medicine… you memorize a fact you can answer a question, you understand a concept you can apply it to many scenarios. Memory is good, but understanding the basics is better and together, it’s a great tool for success as a doctor. If you know how things normally work and why (physiology) you can understand when things go astray, the cause (pathophysiology and aetiology) and the effects (signs and symptoms) you don’t need to just memorize treatment for example, you can understand how a drug works and therefore why it will help in a given situation and what it’s secondary effects could be. Knowledge truly is power.

You have to divide it into 3 levels: How things work on gross level, and at histocytological level and finally at molecular level. eg: What is the heart rate, and what ventricles do and what atria do (gross levels), then go to what AV node do and how it slows heart rate (histological level), finally how the cardiomyocytes contracts and what effect ADRA receptors do to its cycle.
