Congrats all who are getting a doberman if getting european prepare for hell i have had mine its the best thing but be prepared for really hard nipping and jumping up and accidents and mess
Our dobie, leash training has been a trip. He has been walked on a leash his whole life. He is a lil over a year and a half. He walks now with the leash slacked at my side. The only time he pulls now is if he sees a squirrel. I would say the number 1 thing to remember when your in the fits of training is to every once in awhile just stop and tell your dog he is the bestest dog ever. Dogs want to please you naturally but if your all work on the leash they can sometimes forget its their best friend thats wielding the leash. Overriding instincts and lots of love is how hes gotten as good as he is.
Also, Just know that no matter how well behaved your doberman is he is gonna be judged in public. Although i get all sorts of positive comments about how sweet and mature my boy is, I also get just as many if not more comments that are stereotypes about the breed. Ive had people cross the road to the other sidewalk around my boy. Ive had joggers turn around on the bike trail. Ive had bikers get off their bikes and walk them by my dog. Just keep on keeping on and strive to prove people wrong one encounter at a time.
Lost my ten year old Doberman in February...I miss him so much! We are thinking about getting a puppy in the fall. These videos are a fabulous refresher for me!
'Attention span of a gnat' - perfect way of describing a young Dobe who is distracted by cats, squirrels and bits of paper etc that blow by on the wind. A whole new world for these awesome dogs ! Awesome video man ! Once again, I take my hat off to you, the perfect Ambassador for the perfect breed.
So glad you enjoyed the video Michael! Haha yeah when they're young and the world is new it's so hard for them sometimes. Haha. Much appreciate the kind words and support man... seriously... means a lot!
If u have a doberman they look into ur eyes not only for guidance but cos they love u it's such a special feeling I never hot from any other dog and mines 8months old much bigger than his dog he's dark dark brown tho and same colour socks they called on his legs. But when mine hits me don't know his all doberman do this but he wraps his head around mine from the back and hugs that way it's amazing very very hard dog to train tho.
I just bought my Doberman ! I’m getting it in two months so she can be with her mom. I know they need mom until at least 2 months so having these videos to learn from until I have her in my grasp is very good ! Thank you ❤️❤️
Outstanding video. Besides positive atmosphere, the number two point that was invaluable for training our Dobes was to make sure the dog has had lots of playtime/exercise before trying to train. This gets the energy level down so that the dog will focus better. Otherwise, training usually ends up to be more like play time. Arlo is getting so big and gorgeous.
Thanks Suzanne! Very well said. Yeah, I made sure to tell people that before every scene I exercised Arlo a bit. Taking that "edge off" really does make all the difference. I'm really glad you enjoyed the video. I hated how long it turned out but I really wasn't willing to cut out anything, I feel leash training can easily get pretty in depth if you're trying to help someone who has never done it before.
I'm actually looking forward to leash training our pup. Hopefully she won't be like our hippie trapped in our Lab's body and sniff every flower in sight lol
Haha good luck! Depending on the age it definitely might happen! Be ready for it, give your dog tons of breaks to sniff and be a dog but make it clear when it's time to "work" and focus (i.e. start walking).
Omg best breed ever! I just received my European Doberman he's 12 weeks and watching your channel has been amazing for me and my sweet boy. You are making training a breeze.
I wouldn't worry at 3 months old. My girl is 14 weeks and while I take her for usually 2 (short) walks a day, its still quite challenging. But I know she's getting and going too get better, its just repetition. There's been times where I've come home with her and thinking, man she walks worse than any of my other past pups did. But I probably just don't remember, just remember how great they walked as adults. So I'm not worrying about it yet, at 6 months I'd be worrying a bit but 3 months is still so young and learning. The first week it was a great success if she made it around the block without trying to go back home. lol
Great video John! We have been taking leash training with our 5 month old much more serious over the last few weeks. One thing for your viewers to consider - if like me you do not have a fence around your yard - and need to take your dog to the bathroom on a leash, you can’t lose your discipline. I think that it’s important to take a disciplined walk to your potty spot and back to the house EVERY TIME (even in the rain!). I give her the release command once we are out there so she can sniff around, but like you said, she isn’t allowed to pull me around. It’s tough to be this strict if you have this situation (no fence) when the puppy is real young so for those of us that don’t have a fenced in yard, it can be easy to accidentally let some pulling creep in which can make leash training a bit harder as the dog gets older. Also, for those with children that walk the dog, I would recommend considering a gentle leader (head collar). My pup walks good for all three of my girls right now, but I still don’t completely trust the fact that she won’t take off after a surprise squirrel (and at 47 pounds she could take my girls for a ride if they weren’t ready for it). The gentle leader was a game changer for us. Finally, I recommend getting a long line for letting the dog play in the yard (I have a 50 footer that I attach to a 20). Our pup has learned that she can run around and play on the long line, but on the walking leash with the gentle leader, it’s all business. I think this ties in to some of your comments on the importance of routine.
Maybe you do this already but I would teach the kids to walk the dog only holding the handle of the leash. For some reason kids like to put their arm thru the handle of the leash. This way if the dog does go after a squirrel it will just pull the leash out of the kids hands and not pull the kid down (seen this happen many times!!) or pull something out of socket.
@@pjm0621 it’s a great point and something that I need to be more cognizant of myself as the dog gets older. At 5 months and 47 lbs, she’s not pulling over a 230 lb man - but my 50 lb 9 year old daughter.... best to drop the leash and practice those recalls!
OMG the routine thing is sooo true. My seven month old babyboo will bark her life out at five in the evening for her walk. This guy knows what he’s doing
Amazing to see how well u leash train him without pinch collar.. seen many other videos where people use pinch collar as an easy way out.. u prove it takes patience and effort n most of all love to train them...
So thankful for this channel. You are on point with every tip you've given. It provides doberman-specific information which I learned is VITAL for 1st time doberman owners. There are SO many methods in leash training. When I first got Otto, I just randomly Googled leash training for any dog. I tried one technique where I stop when the dog gets ahead of me and I give him a treat when the dog comes back to my side. So Otto computed that as: "If I want a treat, I can just run ahead of my mom. She'll give me a treat when I come back." lol I really appreciate you being transparent and presenting your knowledge as tons of tips that rest on basic principles as opposed to one "dead set" method. Dobies have different personalities. Your videos give me space to improvise in that respect.
I have 2 Weimaraners and they seems to have a very similar temperament. Your training for the Doberman, has been the most helpful source of info that I've found. Very helpful. Thank you
I really appreciate your videos. I got my dober back in July for my birthday and I have been following you since sometime around then. I think my Russell is 2 months younger than your Arlow. But everything you have shown I have followed and it has been going super great. This is my first dog ever in my life and you are correct in your statements before, dobers are a great dog for first time owners and families. He loves and requires alot of attention as well but because of your videos, it has been a great help!! Thank you. ♥️
I love this video. I am a dogtrainer and most people tell you to wear a choke collar or a pronge collar. NO!! In my country it's even illegal. I only work with a nice leather collar and leather leash. Works perfectly!
you have no idea how much i have needed this video i just got a doberman about 3 months ago and let me tell you i have needed this video since i was born thank you so much
So glad this video came at a good time! If I had to guess without knowing ANY of the details of what you are struggling with I'd say to take a few steps back. You might be progressing too fast with the walking. So easy to do that almost everyone messes up there. Anyway good luck I know you'll do it, you know what to do!
I watch any video I can find of you and Arlo and I must say they are fantastic and have helped myself,my wife, and Remi our Euro Dobie. He just turned 3 months, used your techniques for sit, stay, down and a few more and he responds even in highly distracted areas and with another dog,my 7yr old Westie around! For the most part. Please don't ever stop making Dobie videos, they are truly so helpful.
You rock! I love that you are encouraging about the length of time it takes, and the "hills and valleys" portion. This is much like teaching a horse to lead, except the animal is bigger and can step on your foot, lol. Good stuff!! I'm on your channel everyday now.😊
I have been watching you for a couple of months and you are amazing I dont know what I would do without you, I am getting my dobe pup soon so your content is so very helpful, keep up the good work!!!!!!!
Watching these videos made me actively look for a Dobermann Pinscher. I even uploaded some videos to showcase the apartment living with kids and a Dobie. Thanks John Walter.
Thank u so much, I love that u cover trouble shooting too, as it doesn't always go well at first. Ive just found u, as struggling with our 12 month Dobbie. You are exactly what I have been looking for. Im off to your website now. Again Thank you, you're so helpful. 😊
Thank you so much John! This is the video I was looking for for the past 2 weeks... I have started this with my dobie...and I know this will work!..you've just earned another subscriber.. Thanks again.. love from India 🇮🇳♥️
I’m glad I came across your videos I get my pup in September since she’ll be here mid July and I’ve been just trying to educate myself so much in these type of things and you make me feel more confident about it
I love your Chanel we just our Lulu Doberman she’s 9 weeks old full of energy she’s actually my second dobie I ever own I’m crazy about Doberman breed , I like to thank you for all those great tips and information about Doberman I really appreciate that
Fun facts... I'm mot a dog owner (and my attention span compares to Arlo 🤣) but you got me watching this whole video with so much interest! By the way, I eventually want to adopt a German shepherd, but I still haven't found a channel quite like yours - so I accidentally got hooked and now my interest in Dobermans (and dogs in general) is growing like Arlo is improving his leash behaviour 🤣
love your vids sir. My wife called you a few weeks back looking for Dobe pups. We found an awesome breeder and should have ours sometime in august! I really appreciate the time, information, and dedication you put into your videos. Appreciate you sir! Thank you!!!
Brandon, your channel is an absolute gem for a Doberman owner, I wish I had discovered it months ago. Our Doberman is 1 year and 3 months old, she is always ahead when we walk and pulls me very often in all directions. If I start this technique now, will it not be too late?)
Love your videos! I feel so much better now, I am struggling with my 5 month old Female dobie pup, attention span of a knat, made me feel so much better. I think Dobies are too smart for their own good. I have had her since she was 3 months old and I am exhausted. ;)
Oh you are right in the thick of it. Stick with it and you'll get out the other end pretty soon. The struggles you are having right now are super normal at this age.
Distractions definitely excite and challenge our 10 month old pup, and leash training has been a long process as she still pulls. Hopefully we will get there as we go for formal training with other dog at a pet store nearly every week and practice often.
My 9 month doberman is struggling with walking and reaction as well. Just being outside our property is overstimulating for her. Hoping we get there soon :)
I finally got to bring Crowley home last Sunday. He's a little young to be away from mom at just over 6 weeks now but I have an older female here to be adoptive mom. He's already doing fantastic on a leash. He sits still for it to be put on him, he stays at my side as we walk. I think the velcro dog thing actually helps with leash training these puppies a lot. He already thinks his place is at my heels 24/7.
Great trainer. Gave me new tips and tips on where I was going wrong. I could do with tips on feeding. I have a 48 kilo Norfolk German Shepard just under 2 yrs old, but he’s a fussy eater doesn’t like eating Kible dry foods.
Thank you for your videos! My family and I have been binge watching them! Haha! We're planning on having a doberman next year❤ New subbie here! Love and support from the Philippines!
That is awesome! So glad you have been enjoying the videos... really means so much. Don't be a stranger in the comments section. I'm definitely going to want updates when you get your Dobie!
Your videos are just so well done. Everything I need to know its all here and you explain so well and so easy to understand!! Got my Doberman pup Zeta last week! 10weeks old and she is already so incredibly smart!! (A little diva) Already training her and your videos are just THE BEST. Thanks man! :)
2 well known trainers and my Doberman still want walk on a leash. He's over 2 years old and been training him since he was 8 weeks old. I have almost given up.
I have a HUGE doubt. We will be getting a Doberman pup in about two months. I am confused about the time line/in which order to introduce commands vs leach training vs socialization (dog parks, walks etc) Does my pup need to know all of the basic commands AND be leashed trained for me to be able to take him to a park to socialice without it affecting his behavior? I hope that makes sense 🫤 I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!! I feel much more confident and educated thanks to you! 🙏🏽
Excellent video, these are the types of videos i enjoy and find them very informative . Keep the training videos coming please, they are really appreciated greatly
So glad you liked it! Yeah training videos are some of my favorite for sure. Kind of like by bread and butter there... I want to make so many types of Doberman videos but if I was only able to stick to one, it would be training videos for sure!
Getting my first Doberman soon! Been watching your videos non stop and they are gonna be a great help! Thank you so much for sharing all this information!!
Come to think of it I had the problem with kassie biting the leash for a short time. What I did was no no, apply a little bit of pressure, and if the dog play tug of War Walk Away. Simply drop the leash and walk away
John your grasp of the nuances and what sets you apart from other dog trainers. I went back and looked at the videos for my aunt's new puppy it is a Bichon scary
Always amaze me with your content. I’ve mentioned you you before that I’m looking for some land up in Oregon while doing close study by your channel. The plan is ( in the next year) to get some land , build a house and become the most reputable Doberman breeder in the north west. Thanks to you and your channel, my goals and determination and the love I have for Dobermans im gonna make it happen. I can’t wait to achieve my goals. You have had a huge role in my progress with the knowledge i have gained. I’ll keep you posted. Btw love Arlo. Keep it up. Outstanding work!!!!👍👍
Thanks so much! I love your goals! Keep in touch with me. I'd love to help you along the way, especially when you start breeding. I think someone who really cared about breeding a healthy dog could do a lot of good for the Doberman breed. You'll get there! Keep focused on your goals!
Haha seems like a pipe dream honestly! But then again, it wasn't long ago 10k subs seemed unimaginable to me! Thanks so much for your support Soni. Don't be a stranger here in the comments! I don't care how many subs I have, I want to see your comments! :-)
Thank God you didn't use the Zak George method lol. I personally used a prong collar. My dobe learned everything he needed in 10 mins. I also used more adverse training. 2 or 3 corrections and we were done.
Thx, going to try this. Atm my pup is almost 13 weeks, we go for short walks (10-15min 2 times/day, mostley on grass). Going from the house hes slow and behind me, going towards our home hes pulling maybe 70% of the way. If hes not on a leash he always check me out and follows lol.
Compliments!!! ALL of your videos offer great educational value. The content is presented in a professional (but not over produced) manner. You pack a lot of information into your videos. Keep up the great work! Hug Arlo for me brother.
