According to the J.J. Keller "Cargo Securment Handbook For Drivers" the minimum requirements of any cargo securment system are as follows: 80% of the cargo's weight being secured against the cargo moving forward. 50% of the cargo's weight being secured against the cargo moving rearwards. 50% of the cargo's weight being secured against lateral (sideways) movement (the cargo moving in the direction towards each side). 20% of the cargo's weight being secured against the cargo being moved in an upwards direction vertically. The NACM "Welded Steel Chain Specifications" (a free PDF) is the definitive source on the working load limits of welded steel chains based on their grade and thickness, (there's a chart to reference). A common myth is that 1 chain is good to secure 10,000 lbs of a load. No Grade 70 (G-70) (gold colored) transport chain under 1/2 inch in diameter/thickness is manufactured with a 10,000 lb. working load limit. It's also a good idea to keep the weld on the chain facing toward the opening of the hook. The chain link can snap if the weld is facing toward the inside of the hook due to the pressure being put on that weld. The outside of the hook should face away from the cargo when possible, so if the cargo shifts it pushes the hook into the chain and the chain remains connected. For chain binders, consult the manufacturer for their intended working load limit. When you use multiple items in a securment system (including the anchor point on the vehicle), the system is only as strong as the item with the lowest working load limit. The best practice is to use the manuals accredited by DOT compliance consultanting firms such as J.J. Keller, the standards of NACM (the National Association of Chain Manufacturers), and a calculator to determine the forces and chains/straps needed. At the end of the day, once it is driven off private property the driver becomes legally responsible for anything that goes wrong with the load securment, even if someone else loaded it. Criminal negligence is a stupid thing to be in prison for. Let's keep everyone's Grandma's safe when they drive next to us on the road.

Would you need an additional chain for the bucket on your loader? If the combined lenght of the unit with bucket is over 10ft, do you need a 3rd chain? Like you mention at the end ove the video this info is hard to find in one place and I have seen that as part of the 393.100. Thanks and nice vid.

I’d enjoy it if you tried to show where it says that in the vehicle code.

In a roll over I am sure you would over load the load limits on your chains
