Insta360 X3 got a brand new firmware with new functions and updates, including Webcam Mode, 72MP PureShot and App to PC Reframing option.

Among all the updates Webcam Mode is particularly interesting for those who'd like to Live Stream with X3. Until now, we could launch a one-way broadcast on the most popular social media platforms, while this update allows us to join video chats and online meetings with any conferencing software.
On the other hand, Webcam Mode is very useful in traditional Live Streaming, too, as we've got new streaming options we can apply even on Facebook or RU-vid.
In this video I show you have you can activate this mode, use it in practice both for video chats and Live Streaming, and how this new mode compares to the original Live Streaming options with X3.

Hi, thank you for sharing your video. Have you done any testing of streaming and the device overheating? It can do this already under normal data writing and haven't came up with a good solution. Any way to rig a dummy battery? I'd like to make the tech work given how compact and portable the X3 is.

Fantastic video thanks! When a viewer is watching your stream live(from the x3) on oculus VR headset will it view like VR? Or just like a fixed webcam? Hopefully my question makes sense

Thanks! In the “original” live streaming mode, when you are streaming via Insta360 app in 360, your viewers will see an immersive 360 video, and it will be compatible with oculus, too.

For the following models, there is a 30-minute live stream time limit: ONE RS (with 360 lens) or ONE R (with 360 lens).

I installed the new firmware on X3, set it to webcam mode and connected it to my mac studio. Nothing happens and the light does not turn green. Any idea what the problem could be and how I could fix it?

Have updated firmware and can access webcam function but... Using Zoom on either Mac Mini M2 or PC the voice recording is not functioning! Is there some other setting needing to be made?

It looks like youtubers got access to Firmware version 1.0.60 but for me I can only see v1.0.35 which doesn't support web cams.

Webcam mode only works with a computer (Mac or PC), while Live streaming works with mobile devices when you connect your camera to the phone with wi-fi. Unfortunately you can only use your mobile data then. If you need to live stream via wi-fi using your phone, you need to connect your camera and the phone (or tablet) with a cable. But this function is only supported by the original Insta360 ONE X. X2 and X3 won’t support cable connection during streaming.

It doesn't seem like the 1-inch can switch to a front lens, or back lens only. It always shows front and back lens in that split screen mode. Are you seeing the same thing on your end?

Unfortunately this webcam mode works the best with X3 or using the 4K boost lens with the One RS module. I found the same issue with the 1-inch, that you cannot switch lenses to get a single lens mode :(

With ONE X2, X3 and ONE RS you can connect your camera and the phone via wifi during 360 or Reframe live streaming, so in all these cases you can use a power bank both with your camera and the phone.

Sure, you can use the simple Live Streaming option in the app. It will use your camera as a video and audio source, and you will be able to stream in 360 or in Reframe mode.

In webcam mode, you’ll need to connect the camera to the computer with a USB cable. The camera will then use the computer's internet connection, whether it’s via Ethernet or Wi-Fi. In Live stream mode, however, the camera will use mobile data.

It’s hard to say, because in such conferencing softwares video size is set automatically and the quality depends on the quality of internet speed on both sides. (For example, even if I stream with my GH5, the difference between 4K and HD is not always visible.)

Actually you don’t even need a cable. You can connect X3 wirelessly with your phone during streaming.

How is the webcam quality , is it 4K or 1080 with good lighting condition ?

It’s hard to tell because there’s no specific setup for this, and conference software like Teams (and also Facebook Messenger) usually projects 1080p images. Unfortunately, they also reduce the quality of all the cameras you use, depending on the internet connection speed and other factors. But the image from the X3 mostly looks like 1080p.

Unfortunately X4 is not supporting live streaming yet, but maybe it will be updated with an upcoming firmware update.

Actually there's a function called "Webcam zoom" - You can enable it right where you change USB mode. And than it will Zoom on your face a bit more.

Yes, you can stream in 360 using the app on your phone, while this webcam mode is available on desktop

Hey! I can not find any of that Firmware, I've updated the app, also the camera, restartet both and there is no webcam mode. Do you know why?

I found that the best way to update firmware on camera is downloading the file from the Insta360 site, copy it to an empty sd card, and insert it to the camera. Then the firmware update will automatically start as you turn on your camera, and it will run with no trouble.

Unfortunately this update is exclusively accessible on the X3, released with a firmware update in spring 2023. While the most recent firmware update for the X2 dates back to December 2022.

No, webcam mode doesn’t work wirelessly. But you can live stream using your phone and your mobile data, if you want so.

Sucks so bad that 360 streaming is not availble in webcam mode. I would just want to put this cam anywhere, and leave it on 24/7 connected to a computer for unlimited 360 stream. Seems it cannot be done.

Webcam mode only works with cable connection between the camera and the computer. Then you can connect your computer with any wi-fi network. So basically it’s set on computer, not on your camera. If you want to use your camera for streaming with a wireless connection, you need to switch to Live Stream mode.

Yes, it's only an option you can turn on and off. You should set it before connecting the camera to your computer, and then when you enter Webcam mode, it will be applies automatically.

In Webcam mode, you can connect your camera to your computer with a cable, and then you can stream via wifi or cable (however you connect your computer to the network). Or you can Live Stream in 360 or in Reframe mode with the mobile app, and then you can pair your camera and the phone with wifi and go live using your phone data.

You can use the sound of the camera with no trouble, if you select X3 as your audio input, too. But in most of the video conference software you can select between different sources, so you can even combine the image from x3 with the sound of a headset, your bulit-in laptop mic or any other microphone you connect to you computer.
